I was glancing over the roofscape of Sheares Hall as the first light of dawn peered from behind it. The rays scintillating in the distance drew a silver line across from Blk E to Blk A, casting an almost ethereal aura upon the whole hall. The silence of night was soon to be replaced by a cacophony of chirping, and not forgetting the incessant clucks from the resident roosters in the halfway houses. I stood enthralled by the diversity of birds that piously visited the rooftop every morning.
The mynahs gathered in numbers noisily chatting over their breakfast of worms, much like the Level 7 girls engrossed in their gossips. Occasionally, a majestic kite or an eagle, perches atop Blk B's roof in solitude, but keeping its watchful eyes over the area for a careless prey. The Level 8 folks, are much like the eagle, having amassed their wealth of CCA points to own that commanding position.
Cuckatoos are surprisingly common in the wild, or perhaps it is just an odd phenomenon in this part of Singapore. A relative of parrots, this fella makes the loudest noise, with its distinctive calls echoing across Heng Mui Keng Terrace. It may appear to be an elegant white bird, crowned by its proud yellow tuff of feathers , but you'll rather it not opening its beaks, declaring to the whole world the little secrets it discovered in its course of flight (like our Ms Blk C).
Flocks of pigeons and sparrows, the blue gem of a kingfisher, and lovebirds like pairs of black-naped golden orioles, often make their transits here in Sheares Hall. There's a lot more species which I could not name. I haven't quite found this great variety here until I started hanging out on the rooftop tending to the plants. Like us, they come and leave.
The first MAF Brother as a C-TownerWhen I first came to hall I knew it was a place of transit. I would come and leave, taking with me nothing beautiful. I was here for two reasons: I had to pick a hall as contracted by MOE, and then there was Chye who urged all of my buddy MAF Brothers to pick Sheares over Kent Ridge. They say birds of a feather flock together. We had decided to come to Sheares Hall, make significant impact, and leave together, for there would not be any more reasons to stay. Maybe because we're all very noisy people, we ended up a niche above most others here, playing our various roles in block comms, road relay captain, dance ic and what not (squatters too)... ... Soon Yaohui left (he was never quite around in the first place because he was committed to his girlfriend), and Chye left his glorious legacy of having charmed the trial of admirers (including Aud**s) to settle in with Yeejia, too bade Blk A farewell. While Tat no longer resides in my room and now spends his time with Caroline in Blk E (like Fulin with Joyce), Weijie just spends his time everywhere. Junsheng was the only one left next door but I often leave Siqi and him to their affairs. It is only recently, when everyone becomes preoccupied with their own lives, that Sheares Hall, Blk C and especially the dancers, made a significant difference to my stay here. I may be leaving for SEP, but now, there are reasons to come back.
Sometimes, i regret how little opportunity I gave myself to learn more about strangers. People grow comfortable in their own social circles, and close their doors to the others. It is only now that I realise that I would kinda laugh at the thought of Shiqin's couch potato form during the senior farewell's party, or remember Kathy's impatient banging on my door to wake me up for lectures, or truly for the first time see Wendy cry (to me she's always been very strong-headed and relentless in pursuing the things she wants), and feel very sorry for her. There's Shuwen and Derlyn whom I love to suan1. Everything about them can be laughed about. It's odd how you think you had so much time with them through block comm that you would not want to see them as often, and now regret not making full use of the time then to know them. Just as it's a pity that you only discovered there's so many beautiful birds on the rooftop now.
I love my danSHersI guess the best part of it all was having to join SH dance because there were the really good times and company from the fellow dancers. Mark's always making subtle dirty jokes, almost every sentence he speaks hides a figment of his wild fantasies. We have a shared hobby of poking fun at "Fatt"-Ling (肥玲 aka 兽玲 aka Chewbacca aka Derlyn), and a (most unfortunate... haha) shared fate of walking the path of serving Block Comm for a second year. Mark always remind me of a grizzly bear. Big, brown and bellows when he laughs (he always go "Huh-huh-huh-huh-huh" when he laughs). Eley's got a sardonic humour and witty remarks. Not forgetting her blatant use of profanities, matched only by Hazel's vocabulary. She would probably be the one who would speak most truly the way I feel in BGR stuff. I was told that I give very sound advice (but surprisingly am not in one myself), and perhaps that was because we share the same views in relationships. Fangxi is in cahoots with Eley, together their rebuttals against the guys leave us speechless. Fangx holds her principles very strongly, and I believe even Bona also cannot subdue her. I could remember how I had to give in to her last year for OpenHouse performance. She certainly knows how to exploit a woman's prerogatives. Janice is the only girl I know who could b as crappy as the guys. Once she burst out laughing, we'll need a lot of aspirin to get her calm again. The drama mama has her skin thick enough to pull the most ridiculous act in the public. Yes, maybe that's why dancers are who they are. They have no shame.
Seniors and Juniors AlikeI feel sometimes I have not lived up to the expectations of my current block comm, because I had not fought for them enough. I know I have a bunch of very capable people, and I think they have been misused. Many will say how incapable the Year Ones are, but i beg to differ. In fact, I had fended for them time and again. Its only recently, that I felt so much for how the way things are in the hall. The block comm is privileged to pick the cream of the crop, these people are full of potential and its agreeable by everyone and that was why they were chosen. If it turns out that all Block comms are not up to expectations (of some seniors), surely, it is not the fault of the year ones, because many people bear witness to their capabilities earlier on to have chosen them. Something must be wrong with the system to have turned off their potential. And this I believe is a serious problem at the JCRC level or perhaps higher. I cannot understand any rationale for penalising our Year Ones. We picked the best and when they do not leave up to expectations we penalise them. What about those who are not doing anything at all? They get away scott-free.
I would agree almost all the time with the things ZhaoHui says. One thing I agree very well is that the seniors who complain that the Year Ones are not good enough are often those who do not do anything and hide in their own rooms. Chio was frustrated with Blk D June's comments. For more info, just visit his blog, see what was written by her in the tagboard and be a judge for yourself. It will be unfair for me to comment further. Yes, it is the block comms responsibilities to make the block more happening. In the course of this, we would knock on your doors and try have you involve with activities. Some seniors say that the block comm is not capable because they had not been able to involve more people for activities. If we did not try, then we are deserving of their comments. But if we did try, by means which had been adopted by earlier block comms (such as knocking on everyone's doors) or by new methods (which should be the case since times have changed), and the turn out is still not up to expectation, then the problem does not just lie with the block comm, but is truly the residents. And by residents... I mean not just the juniors, but also the seniors. There is really no such thing as an "off junior batch".... just as there is no such thing as "the culture people do not go for IHG"... I agree there are off people... but this does not equate to juniors. Just like, yes, I agree that there is less support for IHG this year, but this does not equate to the culture people are the ones who do not support. Making such statements to group people has devastating consequences. It creates divides. I see only one such division, the people who do not contribute, and the people who do. And in either category, there are both juniors and seniors, culture or sportsman.... SHEARITES should be the term used, to be precise. Leaders of the hall must be able to see this clearly, and must nullify such statements by speaking to those who make them, and not reinforce this division by telling those concern that people think they suck. This only invites retaliation from the concern party and worsen the situation.
Zhaohui likes to seek the easiest way out, haha! I share his views most of the time, except when it gets too chaokeng. Haha! I only do things that is worth the effort, and most of my block commers think so too. Processes must be streamlined and made efficient, but at the same time, we cannot negate the "people" factor or else block comm will be cold and mechanical. To have a "people" factor would sometimes mean your work processes get a little compromise, so a balance have to be struck. Nonetheless, I believe Block Comm 0506 have matured a lot from our bad planning with Buaya Week to Seniors Farewell. Meimei no longer bickers with Zhaohui, and when they do, each takes a step back. Especially Zhaohui who knows better not to infuriate her. Worksessions use to be more mechanical, but now I feel (not sure abt the how the rest feels lah) that we are closer, and talking cock more while working together. Many of you block commers may not see it yet, maybe its the vantage point from which you guys stand, but I think there's been tremendous change in the block comm dynamics.
Sometimes, I feel like I have let Candy down because I know this was not the level of closeness she had expected of us. She tries hard, always remembering to have a block comm foto taken at the end of every event. I try to make that a point also, although sometimes it slips my mind. When we first urged you guys into block comm, I had fears of giving all a false impression of what you all should expect, and I worry that this is what you all think now. Meimei said something which made me feel very proud of her some time ago, she told me that she felt a lot more people grow more on recently. I said the block spirit is coming back... Boo! It's the fact that she actually noted this tells me that it is of her concern. And from the earlier stages, where she appears to not give much of a damn about the hall, till now, where she fervently helps to put up notices and beautify the rooftop, it made me feel very proud, not forgetting Sixian's contribution to part of her change in attitude.
I tell Wendy that sometimes, our guys may have their own little agendas, let them be. We should understand better because we too have our agendas. We should not put them down because of these isolated incidents. So far, I think they have been doing well. Do not compare to the past block comms because the hall is different. Traditions are not constructive. By Darwin's theory, if you do not keep up with change, you will be exterminated in this game of survival. It's nature's law and I believe, nature is till now, the best architect. Nature has the best constructs.
My Pride for WendyWendy in my opinion is under a lot of stress and pressure from seniors and from the eyes of many others. Sometimes, these seniors do not exist. We always speak of how they will not be happy when this is not done or that is not done. But, who really are these people? We have to give Wendy the understanding. She had put in a lot of time and effort in running the comm and I say its not easy for her. Many of you would not know how much more she has to do, although we only see her giving out orders. Her computer is full of block com related documents and excel files and things she needs to submit to COBH and other comms. I understand also that people may think she sticks a lot to traditions. This I agree. But Wendy has a greater capacity to allow for changes now. There had been a tremendous change from the earlier stages when she first step up till now. She used to hold very strong views and it is very difficult to change these opinions or negotiate compromises. But now, she's far (I would say 135degrees change out of 180degrees) more compromising. When the next Blockhead steps up, he or she will be under the same purview. But I say you should stand up for what you believe is right. Do the right thing, and not do what people think you should do.
The Block Comm RedefinedThe block comm's job is really to build greater relationships for the block. It is not to do saikang. We are not the chief maids who would cook your suppers and wash your kitchens all the time. What was the initial purpose of having suppers? It's in hope of getting residents to interact and build better bonds. It use to work last time. Residents come and help in the cooking process, then we eat together and we clean up together. Regardless of whether you are block comm or not. There's interaction and there's block spirit.
Now, this doesn't work anymore. The same few people come around to eat and stick to their own cliques and leaves before the show begins. Why does the block comm continue to spend so much money over suppers which do not serve the original purpose of interaction, and after that leave a whole mess in the kitchen for the block comm to clean? And the residents happily eat and leaves without knowing a stranger better and then not helping the poor block commers to clean? Cleaning together sure build better relationships I must say. It should have been part of the supper programme. Have supper together, and clean kitchen together as a block. This doesnt work because the residents are no longer like those of the older times. A new form of activity to promote interaction must be devised.
I told Jason, Zhaohui and Darius to organise more games. Sports are cheap. They are free. And people regardless of levels, cliques, race and nationality plays sports. And so far, I must commend on Jason for the job well done. Jason (together with Meimei) came into block comm only after Raine left. He may not have been very forthcoming initially, but I have seen his efforts for very often entertaining C-towners for the hilarious notices and posters he puts up in the lift. That is spontaneity. And people who says that block comm year ones are not up to expectation may want to reconsider that. Who appreciates this spontaineity? To the other residents, it is just another piece of A4 paper in the lift. But would they have done the same? Most would not. At least Jason don't put up slipshot notices. Together with Meimei, both learns some adobe and try to steal a picture or two of couples in the rooms to promote Buaya week, or Night of 77 Stars. Don't compare to the same publicity that previous block comms have done, they are different and unique.
Block comm had decided to have Seniors Farewell in the lounge for a simple reason. On the rooftop, it's just too big and people stick to their own cliques. But in the lounge, one person speaks and tells a joke, everybody laughs together. Now we are really targetting the original roles of the block comm to build bonds rather than to serve food and supper. The cleaning of the kitchen is far more worthwhile after seniors' farewell than previous events, at least to me. I guess some may find it a little cramp and hot, but at the end of it, we all had fun. And kudos to Block Comm 0506 for having made it successful. But more importantly, it is the residents who brought the block spirit back.
And note, I say the residents brought it back. Block comm can only seed this block spirit, but the bulk of it still lies with the C-towners. Whether block spirit goes up or down, is really a function of the residents and not the block comm. Whichever fella who wants to penalise the block comm is targetting the wrong culprit. Police catch the wrong thief, crime rates of course remain high lah... then they will sit and continue to interrogate the poor fella when the poor fella is truly innocent.
Alright... that's all I hafta say... Hahaz... this not so old bird is flying off soon to his next destination. When I watch the seniors farewell video during the SL Seniors Farewell.. I kinda felt like.. Hai.. I wun haf my chance to make this video because chances are I may not be back in Sem2... and Year 4 is an uncertainty. I didn't think I would feel this way when I first came to hall, and I bet Zhaohui don't feel this way now... trust me, Zhao, I am as much a normal average Shearite as you are, and not a super siao onz Shearite. I earn enuff to let me stay for another year in year one, and I do just enough to satisfy my own interest. 109 room allo points was just because I had nothing better to do during last holidays... and vice blockhead was quite unexpected, but i still did what i needed to do. But well, I guess, things only become more beautiful when you hafta leave.
