A Little Gothic

Gentle Friends,  we stopped at St Dominick's on our way over to Japan Town and although I posted about this lovely church before, let's revisit.....

... the wonderful church was established in 1873...
the present church was begun in 1923 and finished up in 1928...

... a snap on the nave with the single hammerbeam ceiling, such a wonderful space....

... another wonderful Tudor arched, with hammerbeams... this is the lovely Lady Chapel that sits to the right of the main altar...

 ... the high alter...

... this super window is of "Christ Triumphant Over Death."  It faces East and catches all the morning and early afternoon sun!!  I would highly recommend a visit to this great space if ever you get to SF.

A Little Lunch

Gentle friends, over the weekend, while out and about running around we met up with some friends of ours for lunch.....

... we headed on over to japan Town, and with the Cherry Blossom Festival is in two weeks the blooms are out early in full force.....

... we ended up at our favorite place in JT Kushi Tsuru, it's not the largest restaurant in the area, but we think it one of the best!!

... this is the front with all the "rubber" food displayed....

... we all started off with some miso soup....

... I had one of their delicious seaweed salads....

...  I had a Tuna Tango Roll and a spicy tuna hand roll....

Rico and John both the identical bento boxes....  chicken katsu and some vegetable tempura.

... and Mike had a selection of nigiri and a tuna hand roll...  another delicious lunch and so worth a stop.  There is a large parking garage under the main shopping complex making a quick visit so much nicer!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, making a little headway with AotH, here's a snap...

.. I've been switching up floss colors as I stitch along, I'll stitch something, not like it, frog it out then restitch in another color.... it's slow going, but I'm happier with the results.....  a major change I really like is to do away with all the slight variations in white that are called for and stitch all the snow bits in GAST "Snowball"...

Thrifty Thursday

Gentle Friends, running around Saturday turned up some things...
... I found a couple of pieces of transferware... the plate from a Goodwill and the great mug from an Antique Collective (Mall).  The plate dates to the mid-1840's and I've got lots of different plates, but this was only a couple of dollars and a nice blue...and the mug to the 1920's,   I usually don't buy green transferware but this was an exception, the large size is unusual and I can't pass on a great "farmers" cup - ever!!

There you go sports fans, better hunting this weekend, there's a couple of estate sales that look promising!  Thanks for dropping by, do stop again!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, I finished up Fragments Friday evening and here's a snap....

February 20 - March 17, 2017
"Fragments in Time - Sampler Motifs" by Summer House Stitche Workes
36ct Barn Owl called for GAST

Although I used the called for GAST floss I did change up some of the charted areas for certain colours and I stitched the little bird in the M N Square in red.  It was a fun piece and a pretty quick stitch.  I did make a pretty major counting mistake early on but made do and shifted up the motifs as I went along.

Here is the small start on my next piece.... "Anniversaries of the Heart" by BBD, I have pulled all the called for GAST and WDW floss, but have already made a major colour change in the first square.  This is a mostly white square and I stitched up the vine part in the white to start but it disappeared into the linen and looked weak.  I then looked around at some completed pieces on the Internet and found one that had a darker stitched vine which gave some visual structure to this corner.... so I went with a darker vine.  This will be a great piece to work on during the coming months.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle friends, it was slim pickins' out and about over the weekend.
I found a couple of things...

...  I found a super Waterford vase and what I am thinking is a garden ornament made of a poured concrete composite of the nativity...

...  it is really heavy and has a hook set in the back to hang up on a wall.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, let's post about Estate sales and thrifting.... as you know we are usually out and about every weekend in and out of thrift and consignment shops and try and hit any Estate sales that are in the City.

I realize that an estate sale is a clearing out of a house, but sometimes the things you see and things for sale or left behind by the family or whoever has inherited the Estate I often find very sad......  a couple of weeks back we got to a nice estate sale in Pacific Hights that had some fun things and quite a few family things for sale or left behind.  As I was checking out I asked Bill, who was running the sale and we see just about every weekend, about some pictures in a back office....  he told me that they had already tossed boxes of pictures in the dumpster and that the family had just walked away from everything. He quoted me a few dollars for the album and I snapped it up....

What I bought was a picture album of a Silver Anniversary Party in 1955...for Lillian and Mickey Schwartz.... it is in almost pristine condition.... out of the album tumbled.....

 ... even older pictures....

... Lillian and Mickeys wedding portraits and one of their wedding invitations... she was a Miss Lillian Hirsch and they were married June 19th, 1930...  there were also...

younger pictues of Lillian and Mickey and what I am presuming is one of their daughters....

... the Album was full of super pictures..  here is Lillian and Mickey...

 .... and with a sister  ( I am guessing)

.... and lots of party pictures,  group shots, and dancing...

...  It is a wonderful Album, and so very sad that it was left to be sold of worse thrown away.

A Little Thrifting

Gentle friends, it's been a while since I've posted a thrifty Thursday so here goes...

... from left to right... a super silver roll-over breakfast serving dish ca. 1915, a large Deco "Head vase," a little matryoshka and a great "Imari" patterned plate...

... the matryoshka breaks up into six little dolls...

... a better snap of the stylish Deco vase - when I fist saw this piece I thought it was just a ceramic sculpture, but when I turned it over to see the mark I found there is a large vase opening behind the hat...

... I am a big fan of Grumpy Cat and when I saw this in a bookstore I knew I had to get a copy - I already have a nice collection of the Christmas Little Golden Books and this LGB about Grumpy Cat fits in nicely...
