A Thanksgiving Table Setting, One Week Late: Welcome to the 171th Tablescape Thursday!

I'm a week late but for this Tablescape Thursday I'm sharing the Thanksgiving table setting I had been working on when my camera cat-astrophe occurred. All the pics in this post were taken with the new camera, a Nikon D5100. This camera is super, duper light sensitive, which is why it works so well in low lighting situations. It will take me a little while to get used to the change, so please bear with me while I "learn" the camera.

For this Thanksgiving tablescape I envisioned a soft, sophisticated mix of shiny silvers and browns, with touches of amber.  I usually like bold pops of color in my tablescapes, but I went for a more subtle feel this year.

Thanksgiving Table Setting

I never like using the leaf in the table, so this table setting is a little on the cozy side.  You like cozy, right?

Hang Wreaths on Your Exterior Windows: A Tutorial

Though I didn't have a working camera this week, I did manage to get all the "outside" wreaths hung and snapped a few pics for this tutorial.  The porch isn't decorated, yet.  This is an old pic from a past Christmas showing the wreaths across the front of the house.

Help! It's Holiday Party Time!

I love this time of year. It's crazy busy but oh, so much fun! With Thanksgiving behind us, it's time to focus on getting ready for Christmas and the upcoming holidays. Do you have an office party coming up? Any neighborhood parties to attend? Or, perhaps you'll be the one hosting this year's holiday gathering.

Photo from O Magazine online

Remember this awkward "social" visit in the hysterical movie, The Burbs?   I've often wished there was someone to turn to for the "how tos" and "what ifs" of holiday entertaining. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have someone knowledgeable in the field of etiquette to bounce all those questions off we have about hosting and attending holiday parties?

Scene from movie tour, The Burbs

Well, wish no more because BNOTP is fortunate to have a Sponsor who is an expert in the field of etiquette.  Cindy Haygood, the Training Director with the Etiquette & Leadership Institute is visiting today and she's helping us out with questions we sometimes have about hosting or attending dinner parties and holiday events.

Southern Living Idea House Mantel: Welcome to the 149th Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings!  How was your Thanksgiving?  I hope it was wonderful and you got to spend lots of time with family.  I drove 8 hours to Ohio to visit with my son and daughter-in-love-to-be.  I miss them and cherish the time we get to spend together.  I snapped this pic of a house near by.  I loved this particular photo because you can clearly see the American flag waving out front.

Sometimes the Grass Really Is Greener on the Other Side

A while back I set up a little cozy, fall  'scape out on the porch.

A few weeks before creating that little tablescape, I had purchased some real acorns on Amazon.  They were reasonably priced  and perfect for  fall.  (You'll find more pics of this fall tablescape HERE.)

The funny thing is, I have a HUGE oak tree in my front yard.

Happy Thanksgiving! Welcome to the 170th Tablescape Thursday!

This past weekend I began putting together a table setting for Tablescape Thursday.  On Sunday evening, as I was sitting at the computer finishing up my Metamorphosis Monday post, Max kitty walked across in front of the keyboard and onto the left side of my desk.  I picked him up to put him down on the floor since I can't work very well with him in that spot.  Some how---still not sure how it happened--Max took some papers on the desk, along with my camera that had been sitting on the papers, to the floor with him.  The camera broke apart into two pieces, with the lens flying across the room.  Waaaaa....

The next morning I took it to a Nikon repair center and as I sit typing this Monday evening, I'm not sure when I'll have it back.  So tempting to run out and upgrade to that Nikon D5100 I've lusted after--but I will resist.

Update: Wednesday evening:  I have good news and bad news.  The bad news: I found out Tuesday morning that they can't get the part to repair my Nikon D40 for a 8-9 weeks, possibly longer.  This is due to a shortage of camera parts caused by the tsunami that hit Japan a while back and now the floods in Thailand.

Now for the good news:  resistance was futile.  I just finished charging the battery on a Nikon D5100.  I couldn't face Thanksgiving without a camera.  Should I "thank" Max for pushing me off the fence?

No time to play with it now--there's still cooking to be done, but I really liked the two test pics I took here in the office.  So nice having "live view" again and I think I'll like the vari-angle monitor for taking tablescape photos.  (HERE's a 3 minute video about this camera it if you would like to check it out.)

So, though I don't have pictures of a new tablescape to post for this Tablescape Thursday, due to camera issues this week, I have something a whole lot better.   I pulled up last year's Thanksgiving tablescape and as I reviewed that post, I realized this was the post with all the beautiful expressions of "thanksgiving" by you.  These beautiful words were left on Facebook last year and I included as many as I could in last year's Tablescape Thursday post.  They are as meaningful and beautiful this year as they were when they were left last Thanksgiving. Your words say more than any post I could have written for today.

Happy Thanksgiving, dear friends!  I hope this Thanksgiving finds you surrounded by the ones you love.  And I pray the dreams and hopes you expressed last year have come to past.  What are you hoping for and dreaming of this year?  What brings you joy and comfort and fills your heart with thanksgiving today?

Ummph! Martha Stewart Canceled, Again!

As you're running around today preparing for the big day tomorrow, here's a little silliness to give you a giggle.  Stop, take a few deep breaths today and know this:  It doesn't have to be perfect.  It doesn't even have to be edible.  It just has to be about gathering together with the ones we care about and love.

Dear Family & Friends,

I know that you were eager to accept our family’s invitation to Thanksgiving dinner when you found out that Martha Stewart would be joining us. However, due to a scheduling conflict, Ms. Stewart finds that she is unable to grace our table this year.

Image from Martha Stewart

With that in mind, there will be a few minor changes regarding the meal and decor, as outlined below. Please be aware of them, and adjust your appetite and dress appropriately.
Thank you…

1) Our driveway will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After several trial runs and two visits from the fire department, it was decided that, no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect.

2) Once inside, please note that the entry space will not be decorated with swags of Indian corn and fall foliage. Instead, we included our dog in decorating by having him track in colorful autumn leaves from the back yard. The mud was his idea.

3) The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy China, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork. Since this is Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the paper SpongeBob dinner plates, the leftover Halloween napkins, and our plastic cup collection.

4) Our centerpiece will not be a tower of fresh fruit and flowers. Instead we will be proudly displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper and pine cones. The artist assures me it is a turkey, albeit one without wings, legs, or a beak.

5 )We will be dining somewhat later than planned. However, our daughter will entertain you while you wait. I’m sure she will be happy to share every choice comment her mother made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims, stuffing choices, the turkey hotline, and, especially, her husband. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 7:00AM upon discovering that said husband had only remembered to pull the turkey from the freezer at 6:00 AM, and that the thing was still hard enough to cut diamonds.

6) As an accompaniment to our daughter’s recital of these events, I will play a recording of Native American tribal drumming. Curiously, the tribal drumming sounds a great deal like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, but that only enhances the holiday appropriateness. If our daughter should mention that we don’t own a recording of Native American tribal drumming, ignore her. She’s only nine; what does she know?

7) A dainty silver bell will not be rung to announce the start of our feast. We have chosen to keep our traditional method of assembling when the smoke alarm goes off.

8)  There will be no formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like. In the spirit of harmony, we will ask all the children to sit at a separate table. In a separate room. Next door. And I would like to take this opportunity to remind our younger diners that “passing the rolls” is neither a football play nor an excuse to bean your cousin in the head with bread.

9) The turkey will not be carved at the table. I know you have seen the Norman Rockwell image of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. Such a scene may occur somewhere in America , but it won’t be happening at our dinner table. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in the kitchen at a private ceremony. I stress “private”, meaning Do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children, or older, helpful grandparents into the kitchen to check on my progress. I have a very large, very sharp knife. The turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win the battle. When I do, we will eat

10) For the duration of the meal, we will refer to the gravy by its lesser-known name: Kraft Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or makeup of the Kraft Cheese Sauce, smile kindly and say that you know the answer, but it’s a secret that can’t be revealed to them until they are 18.

11) Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and dog tongue marks. You still have a choice: take it or leave it.

That concludes our list of alterations. Again, I apologize that Martha will not be joining us this year.

Thanksgiving Turkey Napkin Fold Tutorial

Recently, for Tablescape Thursday, I posted a Thanksgiving tablescape with the little ones in mind.  It included a fun turkey napkin fold.   Today I'm sharing a tutorial showing how it's made, in case you would like to incorporate it into your Thanksgiving table this year.

To create your turkey napkin fold, besides a napkin, you'll need a pinecone and a chenille pipe cleaner.  Actually, one pipe cleaner will make the necks/heads for two turkeys, so you'll only need 2 pipe cleaners to create turkeys for four place settings.

Kitchen Tweak: Welcome to the 148th Metamorphosis Monday!

Happy Met Monday! Hope you've been having a fabulous weekend!  Have you been shopping for groceries in preparation of Thanksgiving?  The stores have all been packed when I've been in.

I wanted to let you know I will be posting every day this week.  Even though I'll be taking some time off to spend with family, I've prepared several posts in advance.  So, if you get the urge to take a little break from your Thanksgiving preparations, stop by and there should be a new post up at BNOTP.

Winner of the Giveaway from Charming Cozy Creations & The Charmed Life:
The winner of the recent giveaway from Charming Cozy Creations has been posted on the giveaway post HERE, so take a look to see if it's you.  Also, I still haven't been able to reach the winner of the giveaway from The Charmed Life.  So, if you entered that giveaway, please stop by HERE to see if you're the winner.

Metamorphosis Monday:
I don't have a big "Before and After" to share for this Met Monday--it's more like a little tweak.  Last week I shared a change I made in my kitchen, HERE, that was inspired by the baking center/station seen in our tour of the house in the movie It's Complicated.  (You'll find the house tour for It's Complicated, HERE.)

Though I don't have an area big enough to hold a whole bunch of glass canisters/jars like we saw in the movie...

I did manage to squeeze in a couple over in one corner of the kitchen.

I wasn't quite satisfied with the way that looked, so this week I changed things up a bit.  Do you see the difference?

A Thanksgiving Tablescape for the "Kid's" Table: Welcome to the 169th Tablescape Thursday!

Thanksgiving is only one week away!  Wow, this month has flown by.  For this Tablescape Thursday I put together a tablescape with the little ones in mind.  Do you set up a "kids" table each year for Thanksgiving?  Sometimes I think sitting at the kids table would be more fun than the grown-ups table.

Though this table was created with little ones in mind, there are three things I would change on this table if children were going to be sitting here.  1. There would be just one glass at each place setting.  2. I'd remove the salad forks which could prove a little confusing for the youngest ones.  3.  I wouldn't have acorns on the table since they could end up in mouths or being hurled through the air. ;)  With those three changes, I think this would work pretty well as the children's table for Thanksgiving Day.

Inspiration for Your Holiday Decorating and More!

Greetings Dear Friends!  How was your day?  I've been working on all kinds of fun things today, including a tablescape for Tablescape Thursday.  One bit of exciting news:  the blue and white pumpkin I submitted in the Country Living Facebook Contest ended up winning the most "Like" votes.  Thanks so much to everyone who took time to vote!

Several folks have asked what prize the winner receives.  The winner receives 10 yards of Waverly fabric.  Waverly makes some of the most beautiful fabric you've ever seen, so I'm excited and nervous at the same time about having won.  I haven't done a huge amount of sewing in my lifetime...just a few costumes shared in THIS post and some pillows for a 4th of July porch shared in THIS post.  Something tells me there may be a sewing project in the works here on BNOTP before long.  If/when that happens, I promise to share it all with you--after all YOU were the catalyst behind this--from start to finish!

Stylist Home:
The Huffington Post has a new website devoted to design and DIY, called Stylist Home.

I discovered their site when they contacted me recently to ask about featuring one of my previous napkin folds.  If you're looking for some fun ideas for a future tablescape or DIY design project, or if you just want to check out the napkin fold they chose to feature on their site, you'll find it at Stylist Home.

♦Julia added a fabulous sunroom to her home a while back and she's been busy decorating it for fall.  I love the new lamp and ottomans she just bought for this beautiful room.  Hooked on Houses

The Baking Center in "It's Complicated"

Hope your day is going great!  It's been gorgeous here...in the 70's, so I've been spending some time out of the porch enjoying the fall colors.

I know the cold is coming so I'm trying to fully enjoy these last warm days of fall.

A while back I posted a tour of the house in the movie, It's Complicated, starring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin.  (That movie house tour is available, HERE.)

When It's Complicated first came out, the kitchen was one of the most talked about rooms in the Mediterranean-style home featured in the movie.  Even though it isn't overly grand, it had that special something that drew you in.  Nancy Meyers, the writer and director, knows how to create kitchens that truly feel like the heart of the home.  She did the same in the cottage featured in the movie, The Holiday. (That house tour is available, HERE.)

In It's Complicated, Jane, is working with architect, Adam (played by Steve Martin) to re-design a whole new kitchen for her home.  Jane is a serious cook--even owns her own bakery!  While watching the movie, something really caught my eye in this scene.  Do you know what it was?

I hinted in yesterday's post about making a little change in my kitchen recently, a change inspired by a scene in the kitchen.  Foley, guessed what it was in her comment on yesterday's giveaway post!   I loved the "baking" center Jane has over in the corner of her kitchen. We just get a glimpse of it behind her here in this scene.

I have no idea why, but I haven't been able to get it out of my head.  I think it's just all that potential goodness waiting to be explored.  The flour, the sugar--it's all saying come play with me.  Make something delicious and wonderful.  Fill the house with amazing scents of homemade goodness.  Yep, I got all that out this one scene. lol  You know a serious baker lives here when you see all those big glass jars.

My kitchen is definitely nothing like the one in It's Complicated.

Decorating with Wreaths Inside Your Home

Although Thanksgiving is still two weeks away, I'm already thinking about Christmas.  I have even started decorating a little inside.  I want to start early this year so I can really enjoy the holiday season in full.  There have just been too many years in the past where I felt I had just put the decorations up when it was time to take them back down.

One  of my favorite things to decorate inside with at Christmastime are wreaths.  We all know wreaths look wonderful hanging on doors but there are so many more fabulous places to hang a beautiful wreath inside your home.

Wreaths are gorgeous hanging in front of a window.  Give the chief dishwasher a lovely view with a beautiful wreath.  I love the little one hanging off the edge of the island.

Traditional Home

Here's another great example using a square wreath inside, again in a window...

Traditional Home

I took this photo while on a home tour and I love how she not only hung a wreath in the window, but she completely encircled the window with garland, too.  You can take this home tour, HERE.

On this same home tour we saw this wonderful bedroom, again with a lovely wreath hanging from a window.  Isn't this room just beautiful?  You'll find more of this home tour, HERE.

Museum Wax to the Rescue

Hello dear friends!  How's your day going so far?

I was hard at work yesterday and I'm one tired puppy this evening as I write this.  The leaves are just beginning to fall off the trees in the backyard and every afternoon for an hour or so, the sun has been streaming in so brightly, I can't really view the monitor or work at my computer. During the spring and summer months, it's not a problem.

So, I decided to fold the shutters back across the windows. That involved popping them off their hinges which took way longer than you would think.  They are heavy and are bi-folded back behind the desk so the process was slow and difficult.

I also decided to remove ALL the glass from the tops of all surfaces and clean underneath where little particles had become trapped where the glass sections meet.  What a job! It took a few hours to move the monitors, router, modem, lamps etc...clean the glass on both sides, all the surfaces and get the pins out of the shutters and reattach them in the closed position.  It was a great workout.

I totally forgot to take a pic during daylight hours, but here's how the office looks in the evening by lamplight with the shutters in place and the lower louvers closed for privacy.  I'll take a pic tomorrow during daylight hours and add it to this post.  I know I'll miss the wide-open view, but this will be a lot cozier and more practical/insulating for winter.

Dreaming of Beautiful Beds

A few months ago I went through a stack of old magazines I've been saving, some for several years.  I tore out the pages I really loved and recycled the rest.  This evening I was looking through them and noticed many were of beautiful beds.

More fuel for my blue and white addiction.  This is truly a timeless look that will never go out of style.

Beautiful Bedrooms, 2001

I love the soft muted colors of this room along with the bedtime message above. There is something so crisp and fresh about a white matelasse coverlet or spread.  Do you like a bed skirt puddled on the floor?

Country Living

This bed was just so clever.  It has the look of a canopy bed, even though it's not.  The article shared that the bedposts are made from gauze draperies hung from large cup hooks that are attached to the ceiling.  I love the vintage fashion photos on the wall and the chandelier hung nice and low over the bed where you can really see and appreciate it.

Country Victorian, Winter 2008

This would be an adorable room for children or visiting grandchildren.  The beds are painted with a floral design that coordinates with the fabrics/upholstery in the room!  Next time you see those old beat up four poster beds in a thrift store, think paint!

Make a Pincushion Tutorial: Welcome to the 146th Metamorphosis Monday!

Greetings! How has your weekend been? I hope you've had a fabulous one! I spent Saturday down in Macon, Georgia with my sister and niece at the Christmas Made in the South Fair.  Mark Ballard was there and it was so good to stop by and chat with him a bit.  Did anyone else go to Christmas Made in the South?  It was packed with folks as you can see in this pic below.

Make a Pincushion!
A few weeks ago, I attended an amazing crafting event.  During this fabulous crafting soiree, one of the crafts we made was an adorable pin cushion.  I was thinking today about what a cute Christmas gift it would make, especially if it were tucked down inside a little sewing box.

Today I created another one and took pics along the way in case you would like to make one for yourself or a friend.  To make your pin cushion, you'll need:

Poly fill
Jar lid (medium size lid works well and you can spray-paint your lid if you like)
Embroidery thread or narrow yarn
Embroidery needle
Scrap fabric
A button that looks pretty with your fabric

Do you recognize my scrap fabric?

It's some of the fabric that was left over from when pillows were made for the dormer window seats...

...located in the upstairs family room.  It's also the same fabric that's on the chairs in this room.

October 2011: A Look in the Rear-View Mirror and Answering a Few of Your Questions

There were so many beautiful table settings posted for yesterday's Tablescape Thursday!  Did you get a chance to check them out?  If not, scroll on down once you finished today's post and feast your eyes!

The Tassel House giveaway is still in full swing. You can leave your comment on the giveaway post HERE to be entered.

How to have BNOTP delivered straight to your Inbox:
Recently, I have received several e-mails from readers asking how to receive/subscribe to BNOTP via email, so I thought I'd take a second to share how that's done.  If you are interested in having BNOTP posts arrive via e-mail straight to your Inbox, you'll find a box (like the one pictured below) located a little ways down on the sidebar to the right.   The subscribe box is currently located just below the Facebook Fan Page widget on the sidebar.   (The one shown below is just a picture/example and can't be used to subscribe.)  Once you locate this box on the sidebar, you'll enter your e-mail address into the box and click "Subscribe."  Then just follow the prompts, and it will take you through the 2-3 step process to subscribe.  It's super easy and takes just a sec.

Next, you'll receive an e-mail in your Inbox and it will prompt you to click on a "link" in the email, which will complete the subscription process.  That's it!  You're all done.

If you don't begin receiving BNOTP posts via your e-mail within a day or two of subscribing, check your "spam" folder to see if they are being filtered out by your spam filter.  Of course, I hope you'll still stop by BNOTP in person on occasion and leave me a comment sharing your thoughts on a post.  I love hearing from you!

How to leave a comment on a Blogger Blog:
Another question I get occasionally is how one might leave a comment on a post.  This question usually comes up when a giveaway is underway here at BNOTP.  First of all, please know, you do not have to be a blogger or have a blog to leave a comment to be entered in a giveaway.  Anyone can leave a comment on any post, be it a giveaway post or just a regular blog post.

So, how do you leave a comment here at BNOTP?  Just scroll to the bottom of the post where you wish to leave your comment and you'll see something that looks like this example below:

To leave a comment, you just click on the word "comments" which will be a clickable link.  It will open up a box where you can type in your comment.  You may be prompted by Blogger to "sign in" if you've never left a comment before.  That's just a one time thing.  To sign in, you'll just create a User ID and a password and from then on you'll be able to leave a comment on any "Blogger" blog with ease.  Bloggers LOVE comments so talk to us!

I keep hoping that Blogger is going to update their comment system and create a system that lets the Blogger reply back to a comment, directly underneath the comment itself.   I've toyed with adding the Disqus comment system to this blog because it will apparently allow for that, but I think everyone would have to register with Disqus and I'm just not really sure it would work as I would wish.   Blogger has upgraded so many things over the past year with the Blogger platform; hopefully they'll upgrade the current comment system soon, too. Keeping my fingers crossed.

October 2011:  A Look in the Rear-view Mirror:
Each month I share links to the prior month's posts, in case you missed one or just wish to revisit a particular post.  To read any post below, click on the link found in the title of that post.

Hope you enjoy this "look in the rear-view mirror."   October was a fun month, for sure!

We kicked off last month with a "Look in the Rear-view Mirror" post where I shared links to all the posts created during the month of September.

Kristy showed us how we can change our decor for the seasons, easily and inexpensively.

We took a tour of the library, drawing room and gardens at The Mount, home of American novelist, Edith Wharton.

I shared a few updates in my office/studio.

We warmed up on the porch with hot chocolate for a Tablescape Thursday...

Some folks inquired why I had two monitors so I shared why I ♥  dual monitors and how I use them to blog and work.  Once you've had them, there's no going back.

Fall Dining on the Porch: Welcome to the 167th Tablescape Thursday!

It was a gorgeous day here so I spent some time playing outside on the porch. The leaves are changing and the fall colors are spectacular. I brought those colors to my table setting for Tablescape Thursday.  I shopped the house and snagged a floral arrangement from the family room for my fall tablescape.

I liked it, but ultimately I changed it out for...

...this lantern I purchased at Old Time Pottery a few months back.  I loved how the lantern looked with the dark metal flatware.

Front Porch Decorated for Halloween

Wow, what a fun night! I love, love, love Halloween. I have so many wonderful memories from my childhood of trick-or-treating with friends, so Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays.

I decorated the porch pretty simply for Halloween this year.

Halloween Decorating for Porches

I covered the front door with the "creepy cloth" used as a tablecloth in THIS previous Halloween tablescape.  (You can see the door minus the creepy cloth in THIS post.)
