Basement Walls
Over the last few weeks, our concrete guys (who we love) have been hard at work in the St. George summer heat digging footings, pouring footings, prepping the slab, and forming and pouring the basement walls. The process has taken a while, as it seems that everything does. It is really fun to watch our "lot," become our "house." For the last two months we have said, "I am going to the lot." Now we've established that it must be stated as "I am going to the house." These are the types of conversations keeping us entertained and giving us sleepless nights. It is seriously crazy to see all the meticulous measuring and laser leveling that goes into the whole process. I can say that I am grateful it isn't me out there attempting to make perfect angles and flat surfaces - I will stick to teaching.
Today, we had our first project on the house to complete. We decided to do the waterproofing of the basement walls ourselves. Heck, we can run a roller...why not? It really wasn't too bad aside from the smoldering sun reflecting off the wet black tar we were painting onto the walls (and ourselves.) My mom and dad came out and helped throughout the project, so it was a messy family affair. After we were done, we had to carefully sit on plastic in our cars so no tar would get on the seats. Once home, we got to have a gasoline party in the driveway. It was the only listed substance to remove black tar from skin. It was pretty nasty considering all of us had at least a little on our faces, not to mention hands, arms, and legs. It smelled remarkable! One more coat of tar and we are good to backfill.
