This is an album of covers by popular rock bands of the '80s. A tribute to popular rock artists who became fatalities due to substance abuse/dependence. The selections are great but the tracks that stand out for me would have to be "The Boys are Back in Town", originally by Thin Lizzy, and covered by Bon Jovi; and "Moby Dick", originally by Led Zepellin, then the cover version here features the drummers of the rock bands involved in this project (including Jason Bonham, son of legendary Led Zep drummer John Bonham). Turn up the volume and be transported to a Drum Madness treat.
Tracklist:
My Generation - Gorky Park
Holidays in the Sun - Skid Row
I Can't Explain - Scorpions
Purple Haze - Ozzy Osbourne
Teaser - Motley Crue
The Boys are Back in Town - Bon Jovi
Move Over - Cinderella
Moby Dick - DRUM MADNESS (Rock's All Star Drummers)
Rock Jam Live in Moscow '89 (Hound Dog/Long Tall Sally/Blue Suede Shoes/Rock and Roll)

There are lots of Australian bands I love.Among them: Pseudo Echo, The Church, Crowded House, Men at Work, and my favorite, Icehouse. They are mostly known for their hits “Crazy” and “Electric Blue”.However, the band has much more to offer than those songs. There have been numerous changes in the band’s line-up and the only constant would be its founder, Iva Davies. Aside from being the singer and songwriter of the band, he's also a record producer and plays guitar, bass, keyboards and oboe. He was a former oboe and composition student at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. That’s why I consider the man a genius in crafting his music as he fuses classical with modern instruments to come up with a masterpiece.A remix of their classic hit “Crazy” called the Midnight Mix would be an example of this. Iva has been involved with the Sydney Dance Company’s ballet productions -- “Boxes” in the mid-80s, and “Berlin” in the ‘90s.“The Berlin Tapes” was released under the name of Iva Davies and Icehouse in 1995 containing a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes”.The Berlin Mix of the song is a great effort that deserves a listen for every Icehouse and/or Bowie fan. Then on New Year’s Eve in 1999, Icehouse was featured at an outdoor concert near Sydney Harbour where they sang the Millennium version of their classic hit “Great Southern Land”(a song that has been considered by many Aussies as an unofficial anthem of the land down under). The version heightened Iva’s amazing voice and included more of strings arrangement over the known synthesizer-laden track with less of the drumbeats from the original. But there was the beat of pounding jungle drums towards the end of this great song.
Additional trivia from Wikipedia :Iva Davies collaborated with Christopher Gordon and Richard Tognetti to record the soundtrack score for the film “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” which starred Oscar winner, Russel Crowe. They won an award for “Best Soundtrack Album” category of the APRA/AGSC Screen Music Awards.
Now, to appreciate the great orchestrations of Iva Davies, here are three tracks for you to download. Enjoy.
In 1982, Duran Duran was catapulted to international fame with the tremendous airplay and support given by the then relatively new network MTV, to their music videos from the album "Rio". This lead to the re-release of their eponymous self-titled album, with the song "Is There Something I Should Know?", as an additional track in the U.S. The release of "Arena", recorded live around the world during their 1984 tour saw the group at their top form and at the highest peak of their popularity.Their performance at Live Aid (1985) would be their last performance as a quintet in the 1980s.Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor left the group leaving Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor to continue recording as Duran Duran. Warren Cucurullo, who was initially hired as a session guitarist, eventually became a full member later on. The later half of the 1980s saw the group's popularity waning as they veered away from their trademark sound. It seemed like downhill from that point on until they produced a surprise hit single in 1993. In the time when Grunge and Alternative Rock ruled the airwaves, they opted for an acoustic touch with the song "Ordinary World". It was included in their second self-titled album, more popularly known as "The Wedding Album".Obviously, a reference to the album cover that showed photos of the band's parents on their wedding day. The album was received with much praise from the music critics, most of whom considered Duran Duran's rise to fame had a lot more to do with their fashion sense than their music. The band's sound and songwriting was regarded to have achieved a higher level of maturity with their years in the business. Their newfound success in the early '90s, along with the rising popularity of the "unplugged" or acoustic format, led the band to perform in MTV's "Unplugged" Series. Thus, baring the backbone of Duran Duran’s music, much to the delight of the “not so old” and younger fans. The group embarked on a major world tour performing acoustic versions of their popular hits.It was in one of these events, that this bootleg CD, "Acoustic World", was recorded. This is a classic Duran Duran performance as there are no indications that they will be doing acoustic gigs in the near future. The set begins with "Hungry Like The Wolf" in a laid back manner initially, and later moving up the phase to that of the original version. The track "Serious", from their poorly received album "Liberty", is actually one of my favorites. It has a simple rhythm but has a groovy vibe to it.
In the span of their career, the first half of each decade saw them rising ("Rio"-"Arena" in the 80s, "Duran Duran [Wedding Album]" in the '90s, and "Astronaut" in 2003), then taking a stumble on the latter half. Is it just me, or their song "Falling Down"(2007) signaled another "massacre" of sorts, for the band, for the remaining part of this decade. Oh well, maybe we can look forward to a revitalized Duran Duran somewhere between the years 2011-2015 (LOL). Maybe they'd bring Warren back. I think he's one of the greatest guitar players of our time. Nonetheless, they still have their loyal fans out there who stick it out with them no matter what.

In 2002, The Lotus Eaters had a live concert in Manila backed up by the Filipino alternative band, Rivermaya. Peter Coyle and Jeremy Kelly had high praises for the Pinoy band when interviewed by a VJ from MYX, a local music channel. Peter said that the members are good musicians and were able to grasp the new arrangements for their live set easily.
The set posted here is NOT their concert at the Rockwell Club Tent in Makati. This was their performance recorded for the MYX TV special.

The band "Industry", based in New York, was formed in the late '70s by Brian Unger and Mercury Caronia. They produced experimental electronic music and were able to release two EP's: "Logging Time" in 1980 under Metro Records USA, and "Turning to Light" in 1981 under Mannequin Records USA. However, it was only when Jon Carin and Rudy Perrone joined, that the band tuned up in unison for a more pop-oriented sound. The "shift" paid off well as they were given a break in 1983 when they signed a major record deal with Capitol Records. A self-titled mini-LP was released which included what would be their first and only hit single "State of the Nation". It had a catchy dance beat, with lyrics that echo protests about war, and supported by a music video shot onboard a military aircraft carrier. The single enjoyed worldwide commercial success which paved the way for the release of their full length LP, "Stranger to Stranger" in 1984. The singles that followed weren't able to match the success of their debut single. The group parted ways and became involved in other projects. In July 1985, Jon Carin resurfaced as the keyboardist for Bryan Ferry at Live Aid.He then became a session musician for different artists such as Pete Townsend, Roger Daltrey, Roger Waters, Bryan Ferry, The Psychedelic Furs, and Pink Floyd. He was credited as co-writer to Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly".
Since I’m starting this blog to share some stuffs with you all, I've decided to post this ultra-rare mini-LP of Industry. If you’re familiar with the album version of Still of the Night, then the one here is the 1983 original version mixed by the great Bob Clearmountain. This mix is more synth-pop than the rockier album version mixed by Bob Schaper. Then while you're downloading, check out the music videos of "State of the Nation"(version 1 uploaded by andy01978 & version 2 uploaded by sunserious) and "Still of the Night"(which is the album version, uploaded by aliiema) from YouTube. ENJOY!
