Match Review: Mavericks FC

Mavericks FC 4 Balukus Utd 3 (Eric, Ruo Kang, Eric, pen)

With back to back defeats against Mavericks FC, Balukus Utd went into this match hoping to come away with a decent result. While the end result was 4-3 in Mavericks favour, the Balukus can take heart from their gallant performance in today's match.

Despite doubts from the players themselves, the coach decided to go ahead with a novel formation for the Balukus, a defensive 4-5-1 formation. The coach had decided to adopt a "soak and strike" tactic where the players will all play behind the ball and rely on pumping long balls for the targetman to chase down.

The match started well for the Balukus where the opponents were caught by surprise in the change of tactics and almost conceded a goal straight from the start. However, Mavericks soon found a loop hole on the right side of defence and breached it to score the first goal of the match. 1-0

However, Balukus fought back immediately with a superb team goal. Jason challenged and won the ball in his own half and searched for Desmond down the right with a simple pass. Desmond then threaded the ball gingerly to Jun Wei who then passed the ball to a surging Eric with the first touch. Eric managed to jinked the ball past 2 defenders and put the ball past the keeper off a deflection off their defender.1-1.

The match soon was embroiled in controvery as the Mavericks scored a goal that the Balukus thought was clearly offside.2-1.

The 3rd goal for Mavericks soon came when a miscommunication between the usually reliable Gabriel and custodian Wikyantoro allowed the opponent striker to nick the ball and slot it into the bottom left corner of the goal.3-1

The Balukus went into the break 3-1 down, and one started wondering is this deja vu for them as the floodgates started opening.

However, with credit to the Balukus, they started the second half much stronger and its not difficult to see that every player played the match with heart and soul.Mavericks were pegged back most of the time and it came as no surprise that Balukus got the 2nd goal they deserved. An interception by Zhi Quan in the middle of the park saw him hold the ball superbly and sliced the defence open with a through pass to a charging Ruo Kang who latched onto the pass and he scored with an audacious lob over the Mavericks keeper.3-2

That sparked even more life into the game as Balukus pushed forward in search of the equaliser. However, that decision costed them dearly as they were caught napping at the back by Mavericks as a counter attack saw Mavericks scoring their 4th goal which would surely have settled the game.4-2

With credit to Balukus, they refused to lose steam as they continued their search for goals to lessen the deficit. The referee finally answered their call, as a Maverick defender was found pulling and obstructing the a Balukus player in the penalty box. A penalty was given and Eric coolly stepped forward to send the keeper the wrong way to score.4-3

However, that was too little too late as only 5 minutes were remaining and the only other highlight was a volley by Ruo Kang that sailed over the post.

Hence, the match ended with a 4-3 defeat for Baluku Utd. It is by no means a beautiful game by Balukus Utd.In fact, it was ugly and rigid tactics by them. However, at least they got their basics right finally. While they conceded 4 goals, it is worth noting that wikyantoro kept the scoreline respectable with many heroic saves and the usually leaky defence were playing well as a unit today. It is heartening to see the Balukus' midfield stamping their authority in the game for sustained periods of time and the attack was also credible as they made the most of the counter attacks they had to convert their chances.

Player Ratings:

Wikyantoro: Made several superb saves to keep the scoreline respectable, including a point blank save of a volley that was destined for the goal.

Zhi Hong: First time playing as a wing back. Did a decent job down the left flank as he initiated several attacks down the left and at the same time did his defensive duties with minimal fuss.

Gabriel: MOM performance today as he was the heart of the defence and marshalled the back line superbly while saving the team on several occasions with last ditch tackles.

Kia Heng: Filled in the centre back position and formed a formidable partnership with Gabriel and made several goal line clearances.

Jason: Rising starlet for the team as he did his job as a right wingback to near perfection. Set piecees were always dangerous and his overlapping runs were very effective.

Zhi Quan: Started the game as a DM and did well to seize ball possession and made sure Balukus always had decent ball possession. 2nd half saw him shifted into a more attacking role and turned creator for one of the goals.

RuoKang: Came on as a substitute and went straight into a targetman role.Did well to trackback to help out in midfiled and always there in counterattacks. His tireless runs reaped dividends as he scored an audacious lob over the keeper in the second half.

Aaron: played alongside Zhi Quan and combined well with him to make sure the Balukus stamped their authority in the middle of the park. Decent performance with minimal fuss.

Desmond: Showed significant improvement in his commitment and willingness to track back to help in defensive duties and looked very dangerous each time with his runs into the final third of the field.

Wee Reng:Started in a midfield role for the first time. While he made decent tackles and won a few balls, he struggled to hold his ground in the middle of the ground where the most action was. However it was a no frills performance as he reverted to a left back position and made the left flank a fortress in the 2nd half so much so that the opponents avoide attacking down his side.

Eric: Proved his mettle as the scorer of two goals.Made his presence felt all over the park and underlined his importance to the team. Managed to improve his vision of the game and finally avoided unneccesary individual showmanship.

JunWei: Assisted in the first team goal. However, injury sustained early on in the first half meant that he had to be brought off the game for a x ray examination. Most probably sidelined for at least 1-2 weeks.

Overhaul of BUFC

With the season starting soon, BUFC had recently unveiled its choice of an away kit, a dominantly navy blue with lime green stripes FBT jersey.Taking this oppurtunity, the new board of directors had decided to salvage the team from adminstration through making several new signings, including some trialists who had impressed during their trials. In the latest board meeting, the team unveiled the signing of 3 trialists who had impressed. Kai qi, Kia heng's friend had impressed in his debut match for BUFC with a no fuss performance as a centre back against Mavericks FC. The defensive midfiled pair signings from NDU, Zhi Quan and Kenneth was talent scouted by team captain Gabriel Lee. They had done enough to convince the board to offer them lucrative contracts with a couple of dazzling performances. In addition, the free transfer of defence heavyweight WeiLiang had hugely bolstered the stability of the defence of the team, which had always been a constant problem. With the new signings in the defence department hugely buffering and plugging the holes at the back, all that is left is the addition of a few creative forwards to give BUFC the extra edge on front of goals.

There had been news going around the dressing room that there is soon to be some exciting signings who had vast experience as JC school team players. One of which is Ifftita, a flamboyant left wing in his JC days. Another exciting prospect that left the BUFC fans drooling is the possible signing of former YJC right back Daniel Lim.

While the team is going finally in the right direction, it is important that existing members of the team must not be disillusioned with life at Baluku park. With the new signings, all the players must work doubly hard to earn their place in the starting eleven and there is no longer any guaranteed starting place for any members.

The squad overhaul will be completed once we can find a replacement custodian for stand in keeper wikyantaro. Although he had impressed with his few starting performances, he always felt it was in his call to be a striker and the club values his contribution, so we will try our best to suit his wishes.

To ALL existing members, as we are taking the ordering of an away kit as an oppurtunity to revamp BUFC. I will need you all to confirm your commitment to the team and tell us whether u wish to be part of this team with a new outlook that promises more exciting football eventually. So to all existing members, please leave a message at the tagboard to confirm your commitment and tell us whether u want to order the away jersey. By not ordering, we have to take it that you no longer want to be part of the team. I will be leaving the tagboard open to this till the very last minute of next saturday, 31st May so as to allow ample time for all members to read through the post. Though every player will be valued at BUFC, we will respect any decisions made by you all as we believed it was made with serious consideration.

Training 05/01/2008

Members present today: Rui Jie, Wee Reng, Eric, Gabriel, Desmond, Jun Wei

Had a kickabout before we played a street team present there. First match we were leading 3-0 before some lack of concentration resulted in a fightback for the opponents.. Drew 4-4 in the end.

Verdict: The first 3 goals showed we can win if we tried enough, though we have to really stay focus to keep our lead and don't throw it away in a matter of seconds.

Overall after all the matches I more or less tabulated the performance of our members. Hope I don't offend anyone.

Rui Jie: Showed more cofidence in recent matches and there is improvement in his play in terms of one on one and clearing of balls

Wee Reng: Can be relied upon down the left, but the jitters showed again as he panicked in some challenges.Slowly but surely, is showing signs of a promising player with versatility in both feet

Eric: Started off well with many key passes and wonderful assists, but as the day wore on, confidence waned. Ability to dribble is unquestioned but have to show more committment in tracking back to defend.i.e. once u lose the ball PLEASE dun go "arghh".instead try to win back the ball

Gabriel: Had a good performance and put the opponents to the swords with 4 goals. Once again underlined his importance to the team.

Desmond: Clearly lethargic due to late night romps, but had some great crosses that confused the opponents and had some good runs down the right. At his best, can be relied upon to thunder long range shots past hapless keepers.

Jun Wei: Took his oppurtunities well and had some near chances. Scored a goal with a first touch volley after a superb throw-in from eric. However, clearing lacking in match fitness and needs to improve on stamina.

Hope next week we will have more members turning up....
