Eve and Adam

Review Time! It feels awkward posting a review on a Wednesday but honestly I'm so behind on my reviews that I'm beyond the way of caring! Not to mention the fact that I haven't done a Breakfast with the Bookie post in AGES! Eve and Adam by Michael Grant and Katherine Applegate was published by Hardie Grant Egmont Australia this month! You can purchase a copy of the book from Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Dymocks | Thanks to Hardie Grant Egmont for the review copy!

(Goodreads) Sixteen-year-old Evening Spiker lives an affluent life in San Francisco with her mother, EmmaRose, a successful geneticist and owner of Spiker Biotech. Sure, Evening misses her father who died mysteriously, but she’s never really questioned it. Much like how she’s never stopped to think how off it is that she’s never been sick. That is, until she’s struck by a car and is exposed to extensive injuries. Injuries that seem to be healing faster than physically possible.

While recuperating in Spiker Biotech’s lush facilities, she meets Solo Plissken, a very attractive, if off-putting boy her age who spent his life at Spiker Biotech. Like Evening, he’s never questioned anything... until now. Solo drops hints to Evening that something isn’t right, and Emma-Rose may be behind it. Evening puts this out of her mind and begins her summer internship project: To simulate the creation of the perfect boy. With the help of Solo, Evening uncovers secrets so big they could change the world completely.

The Short Story? - One of the best books I've read this year, Eve and Adam is definitely an extraordinary sci-fi with an original premise and beautiful characterisation. Interesting, edgy and fast paced, I completely devoured this novel in one sitting. I have nothing but good things to say about this novel, written by two of YA's greatest authors, what could simply go wrong? Eve and Adam is a must read!

The Long Story? - One of ritual things to do before writing a review is to read the reviews on the book on Goodreads before hand. I noticed that there are lots of lukewarm reviews of Eve and Adam, many readers are on the fence about it but personally I thought it was brilliant. In terms of sci-fi, it's probably on the lighter side of the scale however for me that was the perfect amount. It's a refreshing read from your regular sci-fi novel, it's definitely lighter and fluffier. The novel almost has a fairytale effect to it, people might interpret this as to mean it's written for a younger audience but I think it's intentional. It's a very feel good novel, fast-paced and easily a one-sitting read. The premise of the novel is unique and I absolutely adored the writing style. Very comfortable and natural even with the dual perspectives. I LOVED this novel and I think it's one for all to read!

The characterisation was beautifully done. Eve, Evening Spiker was a character that really held onto you from the very first page. She's such a wonderful and down to earth character, I felt an immediate connection to her which made reading the novel a much happier and more enjoyable experience. Another character I really liked was Solo. In terms of love interests, the authors have put a very small emphasis on his looks so the love I developed for this character was purely based on personality ( okay maybe a teeny weenie bit on looks!). Adam didn't really play that big of a role in the novel but I liked what I saw of him although he seems like a really deep guy which is not really my type. I like my guys more like Solo... Overall, fantastic characterisation! If you like characters that are down to earth and easy to connect with then this is the book for you!

All in all, Eve and Adam was a spectacular sic-fi that definitely deserves more attention then what it's getting! If you like exploring new genres, Eve and Adam is a refreshingly original sci-fi that would appeal to readers of all ages. Beautifully written, edgy and sophisticated plot and fantastic characterisation, Eve and Adam is not to be missed!

Spark

Review Time! Spark by Brigid Kemmerer is the sequel to 2012 YA Debut Storm which is probably one of my favourite debuts of 2012! I can't even tell you how excited I was to read this one but at the same nervous because I DIDN'T WANT TO NOT LIKE IT ( luckily that wasn't a problem)! You can purchase a copy of Spark at Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Dymocks | Angus and Robertson. Thanks to Allen and Unwin for the review copy!

(Goodreads) EARTH. FIRE. AIR. WATER.

He could feel flames coming through the floor, looking for him. Sparks and ash rained down. He wasn't going to make it. He was going to fail. Again. Then a hand closed over his wrist and pulled, hard.

Gabriel Merrick plays with fire. Literally.

Sometimes he can even control it. And sometimes he can’t. So when an arsonist wreaks havoc on his town all the signs point to Gabriel.

Layne is strangely drawn to him. Layne understands family problems, and she understands secrets. She has a few of her own.

Gabriel can’t let Layne know that the danger that’s right at his heels. But there are some risks he can’t help taking.

THE FUSE IS LIT…

The Short Story? - There is very little not to love about Spark - hot boys, steamy romance and interesting plot, you simply can't go wrong with this lethal combination. Kemmerer sequel to her highly acclaimed Storm is everything I expected! Beautifully written, a steamy romance and the most beautiful boy in the world! Completely extraordinary, if you haven't met the Merrick boys yet - you better get your introductions ready!

The Long Story? - Honestly you don't understand how excited I was to read this book, Storm absolutely blew my breath away ( haha PUNZ!) and Spark did not disappoint either! Storm is probably still my favourite despite the fact the man of my dreams is Gabriel Merrick. I guess I just didn't like the idea of him as TAKEN (grrrrr). The plot of Spark was interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed the novel however I felt that the novel was too concentrated around Gabriel and not enough on the bigger picture.  Don't get me wrong, I loved the heavy emphasis on Gabriel, I liked reading about his struggles, his issues and his romance with Layne but I would have liked to see the novel relate more to the bigger picture like it did in Storm. However overall, it was still a beautifully written novel, definitely better written than most YA novels on the market not to mention Spark is undeniable hot and steamy!

As always the characterisation is quite a treat! Gabriel Merrick - you are the sexiest guy I've ever met. To all the girls who like reading about bad boys, prepare the meet the very definition of bad boy. WORD, Gabriel brings all the girls to the yard! On top of his good looks, I loved how well developed as a character Gabriel is. He wasn't perfect and he is dealing with a lot of issues that many teens encounter in their teen years. Initially I had a lot of hate for Layne ( because she stole Gabriel from me) but you just have to love the girl! She's a tough cookie and I can see why Gabriel would fall for a girl like her. She is not without flaws but they definitely make her even more unique and beautiful. On top of the top notch characterisation, one of the best things about the novel is the alternating perspectives. I really enjoy novels that are told from the perspectives of two protagonists and Kemmerer just seems to have a knack for that!

In a nutshell, Spark is completely swoon-worthy! Lovers of Storm will definitely love Spark as well, written with the same flair and prose, Kemmerer's Spark is an excellent addition to this steamy series! Beautifully written, fantastic characterisation and an interesting plot. Spark is both a love story and a coming to age novel. It is fantasy and it is contemporary. Definitely find time to pick up and read Spark because it's not one to be missed!

Spark Blog Tour: Q and A with Brigid Kemmerer!

Welcome to the last stop of the Down Under Spark Blog Tour! Spark is the eagerly anticipated sequel to Storm by Brigid Kemmerer which if you know me, you know I LOVED. In fact Brigid and her debut took Australia by storm ( haha PUNZ)! I am so honoured to be included in the blog tour for Spark, this is definitely a Q and A you don't want to miss!

Quickies -

Skittles or M&Ms? M&Ms!

Black or white? I ... don't know. My favorite color is green. Is that OK?

Coffee or Tea? COFFEE. Coffee coffee coffee. I drink about 6 cups a day. No, I am not kidding.

Print copies or e-books? E-books!

Dog-ear or Bookmark? Dog ear. Makes my husband crazy. But if it's hardcover, I slip the flap in.

Cats or Dogs? Dogs

Reading or Writing? Both!!

Vampires or werewolves? Vampires. Fur? Ew.

Favourite Harry Potter Novel? I haven't read any of them. (*GASP* HOW HAVE YOU NOT BEEN STONED?)

Have you watched Vampire Diaries? EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. DON'T YOU KNOW ME AT ALL? ( I do know that but for the sake of everyone else... this makes you so much cooler :P)

Book you most want to see turned into a Movie? Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. But only if they don't F it up.

Favourite day of the week? Thursday

Your perfect breakfast consists of - Coffee.

Complete this sentence: Gabriel Merrick never called you back because... he's a fictional character. :-P (  NO, Gabriel is REALZ. *in denial*

and...

What do you think of Matt Bomer? Little on the skinny side. ( I think he is purrrrrfect. *sigh*)

Long Questions -

1) Describe Spark in three words.

 Hot sexy Gabriel ( AMEN)

2) How did you come up with the character Layne (ie WHY HER AND NOT ME)?

I thought Gabriel might find your beauty too intimidating. No, but seriously, I knew Gabriel was going to need someone with a strong personality and a level head to keep up with him. He also needed someone who wouldn't put up with his crap. It took a while to find Layne's voice (I wrote most of Gabriel's scenes, then went back and added Layne's in), but when I finally found it, I knew it was right.

3) What made you want to write a novel for Gabriel instead of Nick?

I still want to write a novel for Nick. I'm working on a proposal for one right now.

4) Character you feel you can relate best to? Why?

Michael, by far. He wants to do the right thing for his family, and he works too much and forgets to take care of himself.

5) Is there a story behind the names of characters?

Sorta. I named the characters when I was in high school, and I went to an all girls Catholic school. I used all my favorite names. I always used to swear I'd marry a man named Michael one day (and I did!!).

6) Are you planning to write any other books outside the series?

Yes! I'm working on a super-sekrit project right now.

7) Who would play the characters in a movie adaption?

I did a fantasy cast during the blog tour that you were (ahem!) a part of. :-P ( YOU DID TOO! OMG I TOTALLY FORGET *smacks head*)

Here's the link: Dream Cast ( CLICK ME!)

8) What can we expect in Spirit?

Lots of action and sexytimes. Really. Lots.

And that's a wrap! As you can see, we have MUCH to look forward to. I *really* hope we get Nick's book because he is my 2ND favourite character after Gabriel and since HE is taken... well... Anyway, my review of Spark will be up on the blog very soon ( think this week! hopefully tomorrow!). This is definitely a series, you WANT to read!

Beautiful Disaster

Review Time! Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire was published by Simon and Schuster Australia in August, originally self published as an Ebook, Beautiful Disaster is one of the first to be categorised as a "New Adult" novel. You can purchase a copy of the book from Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Dymocks | Angus and Robertson. Thanks to Simon and Schuster for the review copy!

(Goodreads) The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University's Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
The Short Story? - I'm absolutely taken back by how much I LOVED this book! I almost hate myself for liking this book so much because it's a cliched college love story that's been redone over and over again but at the same time, Beautiful Disaster has that "wow factor" that makes it impossible to put the book down! The plot was comfortable, the characters were enticing and the writing style wasn't all that bad either. If you're like me, put aside your prejudices and JUST READ because this book is absolutely amazing!

The Long Story? - I'm not going to lie - I'm a book snob. I do not read self published novels and I probably would have never read Beautiful Disaster if it wasn't picked up by Simon and Schuster. Even more, I'm always hesitant when reading previously self published books ( i.e. 50 Shades of Grey). I went into Beautiful Disaster cringing and expecting the worst - 3 hours later - book finished and ABSOLUTELY ADORED. I can not explain how much I loved Beautiful Disaster because it's an illogical kind of love, there isn't anything that stood out but all together the novel was just incredible! The plot is quite cliched, the good old opposites attract and college love tag lines, throw in a little drama and steamy romance scenes and you have Beautiful Disaster in a nutshell. However the novel was just SO MUCH MORE. It was such a comfortable and the chemistry between Travis and Abby was just amazing! It's got the "wow factor", this book is just beyond words!

The characterisation was great, despite the quite cliched opposites attract romance tag line, I really liked the two love interests. Abby was a great protagonist, initially I didn't know what to think of her because she's was so ridiculously cliched. The sweaters and pearls and the rule following, the ultimate good girl. I don't know about you but I really don't like the good girl characters, they always seem so boring and I totally don't buy into the fact that they get all the hot, bad boys! Luckily as Abby and Travis start hanging out, Abby loosens up and shows her less than honourable past! That's when I fell in love with Abby as a character! Travis was a great love interest, despite being overly cliched in the bad boy department, his personality development was really a job well done, I could sympathise with him and connect with him. Both characters were great, not the best but definitely likeable!

Beautiful Disaster is one of those novels that people might call a guilty pleasure. Honestly, I can't pick out one thing that really stood out to me but when all the elements of the novel are put together, something happens and the novel is just unputdownable! I LOVED this novel, more than I can say ( or would like to admit) but if you love steamy romances and bad boys, Beautiful Disaster is definitely worth checking out! For lovers of the Perfect Chemistry trilogy and YA bad boy romances!

The Rise Of Nine

Review Time! I totally lied when I said I would be back last week because as you can see, there is STILL a lack of posts on the blog! It's just been so busy lately, with travelling and school, blogging really HAS taken a backseat but I PROMISE I will be back SOON. The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore is the third book in the Lorien Legacies series. You can purchase a copy of the book from Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Dymocks | Angus and Robertson. Thanks to Penguin for the review copy!

(Goodreads) Until the day I met John Smith, Number Four, I'd been on the run alone, hiding and fighting to stay alive.

Together, we are much more powerful. But it could only last so long before we had to separate to find the others. . . .

I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive. Ella is younger than the rest of us, but just as brave. Now we're looking for the others--including John.

But so are they.
They caught Number One in Malaysia.
Number Two in England.
And Number Three in Kenya.
They caught me in New York--but I escaped.
I am Number Six.
They want to finish what they started.
But they'll have to fight us first

The Short Story? - The Rise of Nine was so good that it put me in a reading slump (and I'm still suffering). Pittacus Lore, you've done it again. You've managed to rise above all my high expectations. The Rise of Nine was absolutely phenomenal, this is definitely my favourite book of the series by far! Filled with action, conflict and intense drama, this edgy and fast-paced YA sci-fi will leave you craving for more! A complex and action-packed plot, fantastic characters and some major world-saving, The Rise of Nine is a must read!

The Long Story? - I have so much love for this book that I have to choose carefully what I write or the whole review will be a pile of mush and exclamation marks. There are not enough words to describe how amazing this book is. The plot is so well developed and I love how Lore manages to write through the perspectives of so many characters without confusing readers. The alternating perspectives between Four, Six and Seven really makes the novel seem more intense. It's a well planned plot thats both complex and exciting. It's fast-packed and action-packed yet somehow Lore manages to squeeze in moments of friendship and love. Reading The Rise of Nine is like riding the world's fastest roller coaster without a seatbelt on. If anyone knows how to write a good sci-fi, it's Pittacus Lore.

There is a significant amount of character development in this novel mainly due to the introduction of more characters. John ( Four) is more of less the same and he's definitely one of those characters that you can't help but adore. Marina ( Seven) is coming out of her shell! We get to see a stronger and more independent Marina in The Rise of Nine and it's so refreshing. Six, I just have so much love for her! She's badass, tough and confident and more importantly she's a really nice girl. She's definitely my favourite character! Nine, initially I wasn't a huge fan of Nine because he was a little bit of a jerk but as the novel progresses, you get to understand him better and he really grows on you. Ella ( Ten), cute as ever! And Eight, this guy cracks me up and he is just one of those characters that you automatically fall in love with! Overall, a really great cast of characters, my only complaint is that I STILL HAVE NOT MET FIVE.

If there is one book that deserves to be read, it's The Rise of Nine. YOU HAVE TO READ IT! This series is absolutely amazing and I would highly recommend everyone to pick it up. The Rise of Nine was everything that I expected it to be and more, action-packed plot, fantastic characters and wonderfully written. Easily addictive, highly entertaining and never fails to impress, The Lorien Legacies is sci-fi at it's finest. A must-read!

A Corner Of White

Review Time! I apologise for being MIA on the blog recently BUT I'm back now! A Corner Of White by Jaclyn Moriarty (Author of Feeling Sorry for Celia) is the first book in The Colours of Madeleine series. This is an Aussie YA that was published by Pan Macmillan in September. You can purchase your own copy of this book from Fishpond | The Nile | Booktopia | Dymocks | Angus and Robertson. Thanks to Pan Macmillan for the review copy!

(Goodreads) Madeleine Tully lives in Cambridge, England, the World – a city of spires, Isaac Newton and Auntie’s Tea Shop.

Elliot Baranski lives in Bonfire, the Farms, the Kingdom of Cello – where seasons roam, the Butterfly Child sleeps in a glass jar, and bells warn of attacks from dangerous Colours.

They are worlds apart – until a crack opens up between them; a corner of white – the slim seam of a letter.

A mesmerising story of two worlds; the cracks between them, the science that binds them and the colours that infuse them.

The Short Story? - Fans of Jaclyn Moriarty will definitely enjoy her latest YA,  A Corner Of White! With the perfect combination of contemporary and fantasy, Moriarty has created not one but two worlds that are joined together by two very well developed characters. A slow but well planned plot, characters with depth and rich prose, from one of Australia's finest YA authors comes the start of a new series that will be enjoyed by many! A Corner of White will appeal to readers of YA fantasy and contemporary!

The Long Story? - This book took me forever to read for two reasons. A) I was in a reading slump and B) the book is quite chunky. There were aspects of the novel that I liked but also aspects of the novel that didn't sit well with me. One of the things I didn't enjoy about the novel was the slow pace. A Corner of White is a really slowed pace novel, the plot tends to ponder along and for someone who loves action-packed and fast pace novels, this just wasn't my cup of tea. The plot was interesting, I liked how Moriarty has interweaved to different worlds into one story, essentially it's two plots that are connected and in turn form a larger picture. One of the worlds is very fantasy based and the other one is very realistic hence the combination of contemporary and fantasy. I enjoyed the plot well enough and despite the slow pace, overall it was a really interesting and unique read. I liked how romance wasn't the focal point of the novel, I liked the family issues that the two protagonists were facing and I liked how everything worked out in the end. It's quite a confusing book but once you get the ball rolling, it's truly quite brilliant.

The characterisation is definitely my favourite part of the novel. The benefit of  a novel written about two worlds is that it follows two different characters. However instead of two different perspectives of the same plot, each character has its own story. Madeleine was a really great character, initially I couldn't quite figure her out because she's a really complex character whose actions and personality are rather confusing however once you start to connect with Madeleine, her character really comes to life! Elliot was a wonderful character and I felt myself connect better with him than Madeleine because of a variety of reasons but mostly because the issues Elliot tackles throughout the novel made him appeal to me more and also his personality really complimented mine. Fantastic protagonist, a wonderful cast of secondary characters and overall just a job well done in the characterisation department!

In a nutshell, A Corner of White is a novel that readers of YA will enjoy. If you don't mind a novel with a slow pace and some initial confusion, this book is definitely worth checking out! Moriarty latest YA novel is the perfect combination of contemporary fiction and YA fantasy. With a complex and brilliant plot and beautiful characters, A Corner of White is one to put on the radar!
