Invisible Mom

I got this in an email today. It made such an impact on my thoughts this morning that I wanted to share. Now I know that I am walking on eggshells with blogging etiquette seeing how I have know idea who really wrote it. So if you did by chance let me know so I can give credit where credit is due.

Invisible Mother......One Woman's Story

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store.

Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously, not.

No one can see when I'm on the phone, or when I'm cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.

I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that once studied history and the mind that graduated suma cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going; she's going; she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England..

Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.

I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself.

I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe.

I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription:

'To My Dear Friend, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:

1) No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.

2) These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.

3) They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.

4) The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'

At times, my "invisibility" feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.

The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'you're going to love it there.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

I Hope this encourages you when the going gets tough as it sometimes does. We never know what our finished products will turn out to be because of our perseverance.

Christmas Magic, Miracles, and Giving

This year we had a real tree and it made our house SMELL so GOOD! It was a noble fir and something we learned is that on that type you can see little blister like bumps on the trunk. If you pop them once a week you will release pine oil which will of course make the house smell like Christmas.

A few weeks before Christmas my mom called and told me about this AWESOME deal she heard about for a piano. Well, let me give you some back ground about something that relates to this story. I few weeks before this day I was on my knees praying and felt the spirit prompt me to pray for music to be in our home. AJ is playing the violin but for some reason I felt certain that we needed more music in our home. That this music would bring us the healing and peace that we all needed. Now back to this cold December morning when my mom and I drove to a warehouse where we saw a piano in almost perfect condition. The man said they had to sell it and when he told us the price there was no question it was ours, the check was written and the music I prayed for would be delivered on Christmas day. Our house felt immediately like a HOME when that piano was all set up and cleaned. AJ is now taking lessons and loves them. I love that I can still plunk out some of my favorites too. I love that prayers are inspired and answered.

When it was all said and done this Christmas we all got what we wanted. Russ loved his BIG bag of movie theater popcorn (AJ's idea).

I loved that Russ bought me clothes this year and that he did a dang good job this time. He even got me Christmas Eve PJ's!

Every time I do my hair I feel so happy! Russ gave me a new blow dryer that seriously makes my hair shinier AND softer! I never thought something that sounds so gimmicky would really work! You have to get an Ionic dryer if you are ever in the market. Look how pretty this is! He told me later that he had no idea that it was Pink. Silly, color blind, sweet, hubby!

My favorite reaction from Christmas was of course Zach when he un-wrapped this Wii'lly Fabulous family gift. Check it out and keep in mind that watching this clip will never compare to being there.

Well, finally I feel like I accomplished what I set out to do. Sharing the Christmas Magic, Miracles, and Giving that made Christmas 2008 the best one ever for me.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things

I know Christmas was month ago. But I am telling you this was my favorite Christmas ever! And I never want to forget it! I have been so busy with other things I am making time today to share some of the special moments our family had this past holiday season beginning with this one.

For a Sunday afternoon project I gave the kids ALL the ads from our multiple Sunday papers (if you wonder why I have multiple Sunday papers you better go to this link and learn more.), a sheet of paper, glue sticks and scissors. I told them to cut out what they wanted for Christmas and glue it on their page. That was awesome especially for Maya since she can't read. AJ even made a page for our family with things that they all decided our family should get.

We then took our lists and went to see Santa. I have to give it to Santa and his amazing patience!

Watch the videos below and see what I mean. (you'll probably want to pause the tunes to hear. It is not the best audio)

Notice how Santa points to the items!

I am not sure if she was scared or if she just didn't feel like Santa was worthy of her eye contact!

AJ felt too big for Santa this year this was the quick shot we got her with the man in red.

After all the excitement the little kids just couldn't wait until Christmas and this is where they slept. Their plan was to sleep her on the floor for 3 days so they could try and catch Santa.
