Remembering Christmas Past

Christmas Remembered
December 11, 2008

As I prepare for Christmas this year I can not help but think on the Christmases past that I have had. My earliest memory of a Christmas tree was my Grandmother & Grandfather Shields (Amos & Doretha). Grandma Shields always decorated her tree to perfection. Every few years she would change the theme of her Christmas tree. The one I remember most was the year she used ice cream cones and candy on her tree. She must have spent hours making the ice cream cone ornaments. They were glass candy ornaments also on the tree. Under their Christmas tree would be a village – a Shirley Temple doll, my Dad’s army guys, houses, cars, snow and mirrors to look like ponds. There usually was a white picket fence to separate the grandchildren and the tree.

My Mom and Dad were married in front of Grandmother and Grandfather Shields’ Christmas tree.

My Father liked to decorate our Christmas trees. I can not forget the aluminum Christmas tree with the rotating color wheel that would change the color of the tree. There was also the white flocked tree that Dad spent hours putting the gold glass ornaments down the center of the tree. Dad had an artist eye and could be very creative.

Sometimes on Christmas Eve Jeff, Jerry and I made time to sing songs in front of the Christmas tree. Every Christmas we would try to outwit our parents in sneaking into the front room where the tree was keep to see if Santa had come yet. We would try drinking lots of water before going to bed so we would have to potty in the middle of the night. We always sleep together on Christmas Eve so we could wake each other up early. Dad was very resourceful in trying to outwit us. One Christmas he decided to sleep in front of the front room door so we could not open it. When we would push on the door Dad made it sound like he was Santa Claus and told us to go to bed. One year Dad taped all the light switches on off position so we could not turn on the lights to see if Santa had come.

Every year Kennecott Copper Company gave a Christmas Party for all the grade schools in the area. They would should “The Littlest Angel”, cartoons and sing Christmas songs. Santa would pass out a Christmas socking filled with candy and small toys. Santa seemed to know my name when he had to ask the other children their names.

If you believe in Santa do not read! When I was in sixth grade I received the greatest shock of my life. My Mother told me that the Santa Claus I would be seeing at the Kennecott Copper Christmas Party was my Dad. It was a great shock to me to find out the truth about Santa. She did not want me to recognize him and tell my brothers or friends who Santa was. After she made her confession I realized why Santa had known my name at the last couple of Christmas parties.

When I was older it was always fun helping my Father play Santa Claus for our friends and family. He would be in the Magna Christmas parade. Late at night I would help him assemble my brothers’ toys.

Wall E

Wall E
December 11, 2008

This is Wall E, he is moving into the Taylor home.

You ask why is Wall E moving in with the Taylors. Well Linda went shopping with Evan and Noah – they love Wall E. Can you see “sucker” printed on my forehead?

Wall E dances when you hook him up to my iPod. The only thing Wall E says is “Wall E” in a very annoying voice. This is Wall E having breakfast with Alan. He danced for Alan during breakfast.

This is Wall E helping Linda work on the computer. There is not a picture of Linda losing it.

Christmas Dish Migration

Linda’s Christmas Dish Migration

It is time the annual Christmas Dish migration. Over the year this has been a problem because Alan fiercely guards his plain white dished. In fact Alan hates any changes especially at Christmas time. He spends all Christmas season avoiding eating off the Christmas dishes. I love to decorate at Christmas time and you must have Christmas dishes. Ben has names this annual event “The Christmas Dish Migration”.

This is the cabinet that the Christmas dishes have been stored in the past. I would have to move the other dishes to make room. Alan would search out the hiding place of his plain white dishes so he could avoid using the Christmas dishes.

This summer I bought a used china cabinet, table and chairs from Becky Frost at her garage sale. Now Alan’s plain white dishes can stay in their cabinet and the Christmas dishes have a home.

Who couldn’t love these cute snowmen?

Friends

Cyprus High School
Class of 1968

In September I went to my 40 year class reunion. I was a little scared and not sure what to expect. Before the reunion I started to contact some high school friends to see if they were going. I reverted back to the teenage mentality – I was afraid to be labeled a “loner”. It was fun to hear from old friends – some were going to the reunion and some were not.

When I visit Salt Lake City, I try to visit the friends I grew up with – Cheryl Tuckey, Debbie Backman Jenson and Sue (Susan) Ungerer Rice. We started this a few years ago and it is a pure joy to get together with them. They helped me when I was growing up, they were my friends. It is a joy to see the women they have become and the talents they have developed. Each of my friends has their problems and sorrows, but they keep on growing and learning. With Christmas approaching one of my favorite memories is rushing over to their homes to see what they got for Christmas. Sometimes I would not even wait to put on my shoes. In the winter our dads would hook our sleds on the back of the cars and pull us up and down the street. Cheryl, Debbie, Sue and I shared secrets and dreams together.

I worried and worried about my reunion -- What would people think of me? Would they think I was a loser? Would anyone want to talk to me? How would I measure up to them? Would I find a friendly face? Would anyone talk to me?

All my fears were silly. It was wonderful seeing old friends and class mates. Each person was friendly and kind to me. High school can be a tough time in you life, I was fortunate to have friend that accepted me. Acceptance is an important part of high school.

This is just one picture from my reunion, you can see us all smiling. My face hurt from smiling so much.

22 Nov 2008

This is a first of many things for me this week. Joining Facebook and now blogging. Who would of ever thought I would be writing my thoughts to be published on the internet. I am glad to see that this has a spelling checker.

Just a few more days and it will be Thanksgiving and after that the Christmas season is here. This is the weekend that I start my Christmas decorating. I am trying not to put out any of my Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving is over so that I will not confuse my grandchildren as what holiday we are celebrating. There are too many of the Taylor clan to fit in the kitchen, so we are eating down stairs for Thanksgiving -- should be intersting.

Happy Thanksgiving!
