Joanne - Love Projects

Happy Thursday everyone! Joanne here with a couple of projects I've made with some Love themed products from the Artfull Crafts shop!

First up is a layout I have made of my daughter in her woolens handknitted by her Great-Grandmother.

Products used:
Making Memories Vintage Pearl Paper  (Top and bottom butterflys)
And a closeup....
I love love love the red Making Memories Glitter paper! It would be perfect for making your own embellishments with. Ive kept every scrap of the sheet I have and am planning on using it for little butterflys on cards.

My second project for today was a Kaisercraft Wooden Photo Display.

As Shirl mentioned in an earlier post (found here) Kaisercraft have been coming out with these neat sheets of blocked paper that are made for these frames. All of the paper I have used is from this one sheet of paper from the Love Notes Collection.

I made this for my daughter and she loves looking at it and trying to drag it around with her. One thing I do want to mention is when painting these white they do need lots and lots of coats if you using normal craft paint. When I asked some of the Design Team for some suggestions of how to paint it they mentioned these tips:
  • Use a foam roller.
  • Spray paint.
  • Do a coat of sealer paint or gesso first before you start the paint.

Thanks for reading and I hope you all have a great day! Enjoy the sunshine!

Lowri - Tuesday Tip - Fun Bookmarks (with Tutorial)

Hi Everyone - Lowri  here with a Tuesday Tip. I have made a few of these bookmarks for various occasions and they are really fun. A few people have told me that they have made these with kids after I featured it on my blog - and they really are easy to do!

Here is a tutorial I created to show just how simple they are - and check out my other examples underneath.
I have used my cuttlebug, but you could any die-cutting machine.

You can of course use a punch for a wider variety of shapes..and I noticed that Liz has been loading some new punches onto the website shop TODAY!

Why not make some and enter them into our challenge this month!

Bookmark Tutorial

  1. For 6 bookmarks, cut 12 pieces of card measuring 6 inches x 2 inches.
  2. Using a circle die, cut a circle from the top of the bookmark on 6 of your 12 pieces. Size and placement to suit yourself!
  3. Here they are looking all neatly cut!
  4. Using a 2 inch embossing folder, emboss your design into the bottom of the card
  5. Cut 6 squares of patterned paper, slightly larger than the diameter of your circle and attach onto the reverse of the front of the bookmark (I used glue-dots)
  6. If you like - attach some ribbon to the top for an extra touch
  7. Attach the back piece of card to the front (I used glue)
  8. Decorate as desired

Hearts / Love Theme

Thank-You Theme
I made these for a Thanksgiving Theme at Paper Issues

I made these for my sister to give to people after she had her baby..

Hope you have enjoyed these - and do let us know if you try out this technique!

Sunday Scrapping - Meet Tina

Hi Everyone - we hope you had a great week and if you are in Australia - that you have not been too affected by the terrible weather events that have been happening over there.

Did you see the posts this week from Lowri, Shirley and Liz?

Plenty of inspiration there for lots of LOVELY projects!

We have already had a couple of entries into the challenge - please see last week's Sunday post for details and send your entries to artfullcraftsdt@gmail.com. We love to see them and next week we will announce what the fabulous prize will be!

For our feature this week we are meeting another member of our Design Team.....

SUNDAY SCRAPPING -
Meet The Design Team

This week we are meeting Tina Connolly - a talented scrapbooker from Queensland.

I asked Tina how she would describe her style and she came up with this great answer!
"I have difficulty putting myself into one genre!  I love shabby chic, but also do simple LOs,  grungy LOs , and experimental/artsy layouts.  It depends on the photos, time available, and where I'm scrapping (at crops I tend to do simple, multi-photo layouts because I can't cart around all my "stuff").
I was asked the other day for a few words that describe my style, and came up with  "innovative, textured, & detailed".  I really love using lots of techniques on my pages, & have the most fun scrapping when I'm experimenting."
We asked Tina the following questions and we also asked her to share three of her favourite projects.

How were you introduced to scrapbooking?
I attended a Crafty Kids party,  bought a few stickers and stamps, and made a scrapbook as my youngest daughter's Baby Book.  I  did some very basic pages, then didn't do any until about 4 years ago.  I found a whole new world of cool products was available.  I started playing & experimenting, and I was hooked!  I had only attended one scrapbooking class before I started teaching, but have been lucky enough to attend Creative Block, and some classes run by Print Blocks with Jane Tregenza (who is on on the Graphic 45 Design Team), and Jenny Sutherland (NZ).

What inspires you for layouts, projects, cards?
My layouts are inspired by the photos and memories/feelings that they envoke.  When I make cards, it is sometimes trying out different techniques, other times by the occasion/who its for.  I quite often see ideas for colour combos/textures in interior decorating and fashion trends.
"Family"
I love the texture in this layout, plus it's a special photo.  The cardboard was distressed and then painted & inked.  I inked the bird and title using two colours.  Then I sprayed it with GlimerMist, and used Distress Stickles to add details & texture to the bird.  The chipboard scrolls have been inked and dry embossed.  There is a hidden journalling pocket behind the photo.

What other project types do you like to work on besides scrapbook pages?
I enjoy doing canvases, cards, and tags.  I tend to collect OTP projects to do "one day".  I loved making the Kaisercraft Christmas tree, and Kutalicious Christmas baubles to decorate my home for the festive season.

What is your favourite scrapbook brand and why?
Are you serious, you want me to just choose one?  For versatility of products I can't go past Tim Holtz, with his dies, masks, inks, tools, embossing folders I can create fantastic, original, and unique embellishments, and papers of my own.    I also love Prima & Websters Pages for their gorgeous feminine papers, laces, ribbons and flowers.  Oh....and Pink Paislee, K & Company, & Graphic 45!
"Blossoming Beauty"
Another favourite photo of my girls.  This was really an experimental piece, I used a canvas backwards, tore up my (perfectly good) K & Company paper and adhered it with Modge Podge.  Once it was tacky I brushed lots of Perfect Pearls (by Ranger) which gave it a gorgeous sheen.  I painted the exposed wood, and Glimmer Misted the outer frame of the canvas, Then added Fantasy Film, & Crystallina shred, covering it with Impasto, then more Perfect Pearls.  The chipboard words were painted, the leaves & flowers Glimmer Misted.   (I've attached a closeup so you can see the shimmer & shine).   I used a Martha Stewart edge punch on the photo mat,  then it was painted gold, and dry embossed.  (Can you tell I love playing with "stuff"?)

What scrapbooking tools/products can you not do without?
My paper trimmer, distressing tool , & Cutterbee scissors are essentials.   I really love masks, misting, and inking, you can change your papers completely with these three things, and I use at least one of these on almost all my pages.

What is your current favorite technique or embellishment?
My new favourite thing is Diamond Dust, I use it on flowers (to give that Prima look), it can also give the  look of snow or ice.

What do you hope to try or improve on this year?
I'm trying to be better at journalling,  updating my blog on a regular basis, and I want to create more tutorials.   I also hope to organise a major scrapbooking fundraiser for breast cancer later this year.
"Be Yourself"
I love this photo I took of my youngest daughter.  Believe it, or not this used to be plain white paper  - you know the inserts from your album refills?  It was totally transformed using Twinkling H2Os.  There is a tutorial on my blog regarding this "Gladwrap Technique".  Then I sprayed Glimmer MistStazon when stamping over GM or H2Os, it won't smudge and the ink takes on a subtle appearance).   Flowers were sprayed with GM, and details added with Dimensional Pearls.  Chippy was painted with Radiant Rain (Luminart) daubers.  It's very shimmery in the light!  (You can never have too much bling!)
What advice can you give to people just beginning to enjoy scrapbooking?
The  main thing is to just get started and have fun.  Not every layout will be a masterpiece, just play, experiment and enjoy the process.  And don't panic if you  make a mistake, it can almost always be fixed with a little ingenuity.

Do you have a blog?
Yes, www.scrapdiva-tina.blogspot.com  (oh and I love getting comments....that way I know I'm not talking to myself in cyberspace!)

Thanks so much Tina for sharing a little more about yourself with us - we always love looking at your work.

Stay tuned this week for some more great work from the Design Team - and don't forget

Beyond LOVE ~ Shirl

Hi Everyone, I've got a couple of projects to share with you today!
The first one is the new BTP Kaisercraft Photo Display using the KC "After Five" Papers
These displays are very effective and they are very simple to do once I figured out the best way to to it!!
Firstly just paint the frame and the backing piece in the color of your choice, I just used plain black then when it was dry I sprayed it with glimmermist (it was a blacky silver color..sorry can't remember the name of it).

I found it was easier to cut all your piece then make sure they all fit in the holes where u want them...then embellish them to your hearts content!! THEN....glue the frame part to the back (I clamped mine to the desk) and when completely dry, then attach all your photo's & paper in, decorate the outer frame if u like.

The mini roses work beautifully on this as they are small enough be be in scale with the size of some of the holes in the display!
The other thing that is great is I only used one sheet of paper, all the new Kasiercraft paper ranges comes with a sheet of "blocked paper" so easy to cut them down but you may need to trim, them slightly to fit in the holes.
I've made this as a gift for some friends....I think they'll love it!

My next project is a bit outside the "Beyond Love" theme..... its a Layout of Keith Urban's new CD "Get Closer" which I absolutely "LOVE"....I'm a big fan and going to his concert here in Melb in April (can't wait)

I just used some plain cardstocks and a few scraps of Kasiercraft 'Shaken Not Stirred" I cut out the guitar on my cricut machine with I thought was pretty dang COOL!

I grunged it up a bit with ink..a few sprays of Glimmermist a bit of bling in clusters...then I made some "checker plate tin" I just covered a piece of cardstock with normal kitchen foil and ran it through my cuttlebug and swiped it with a black ink pad....I 'LOVE' it!!

I had a bit of a panic attack last night as we had 2 major storms we had water coming in the house everywhere, then I thought OMGosh!!! my scraproom I ran out into the rain (like a crazy woman!!!) to get to my room and thank goodness all was dry!
Might have a chance to get out into my scraproom a bit more from now on as next week as my little girl starts school on Monday..were both pretty excited about that!!
Have a good week everyone! Shirl :)

Liz - Jenny Loves Shoes!!

Hi everyone. It's midnight madness night here at Artfull Crafts - and instead of joining in the crafting I'm blogging! I've had some fun during the week playing with the Love Notes range from Kaisercraft. I do love it - but you'll have to wait for my creations. This month's blog topic is LOVE - and I want to introduce you to a customer that we LOVE! Her name is Jenny.

She LOVES coming to the store and she LOVES shoes!! She makes these exquisite cardstock shoes (and she's given me the template!!).

She makes them for her LOVEly friends. She spends time thinking about what colours her friends would like and then fills the shoes with little goody bags. Then she makes the matching handbags!

So you all want the template?!! Well you might have to come to SENZ this year. The classes are taking on a slightly different format. There are 3-hour slots for some of the longer projects - or three 45-minute workshop sessions. And we're thinking this class could be great as a workshop! What do you think?

Lowri - Simple Album with Tutorial

Hi everyone - Lowri here with the first "All About Love" post to give you inspiration!

Now - I am not really a pink or a Valentines Day kinda person, but I do LOVE making mini-books, especially for family and I am going to show you one of the simplest techniques.

Not only is it made from only paper it is a great way to use up strips you have previously cut from 12x12 sheets.  You can adapt the size of this once you have mastered the basic technique - which is really simple.

Check out my tutorial below to get all the know-how!

Sassafrass Lass "Indie Girl" Love Book

I am new to the Sassafrass Lass products and I have to say some of these papers and embellishments in the Sassafrass Indie Girl line are really lovely. Each piece of paper comes with an extra 12 inch border, die cut strip that you can use as a decorative strip which is a really neat idea! (I see Kaisercraft are doing this too now which is great)

I have used the Indie Girl Stickers and a chipboard button I made to decorate the front.
The Indie Girl Journal Tags and Stickers are the perfect size for the book too and I have used them for a mat on the pages
Here are a couple of close-ups of the detailing. I have also used a few Basic Grey brads which matched perfectly!

The phrases I used were from an old packet of Heidi Swapp stickers I found rolling around in the bottom of my rub-ons drawer! I never thought I would have a use for them which just goes to show it's worth going through your supplies every time you start a new project!

As requested via our facebook page - here are a couple of pics of the inside pages

Tutorial

Now I am not going to deny this technique IS a little heavy on the paper use - but if you haven't had to buy a blank album - then I guess overall it's no more expensive than any other technique!

I use it as a way to use up paper and odds and ends of collections so I don’t feel guilty! This size book with 8 pages uses the equivalent of 2 whole sheets of paper – which is still probably cheaper than buying an album and covering it in paper!

You could of course make the book from plain cardstock and cut patterned paper to cover each page, which would effectively use half the amount of patterned paper.
  1. Cut 8 pieces of paper  4” x  8”
  2. Fold all the pieces into half , with the side of paper you want showing on the INSIDE
  3. Glue pieces together back to back to create pages
  4. Ensure that the folds are always aligned
  5. When all piece are glued – round corners if desired
  6. Cut piece of paper 8.5” x 4” for cover – round corners on one side
  7. Score cover at 4” and 4¼ ” to create "spine" for book
  8. Glue cover to front of book – do not glue spine
  9. Glue cover to back of book
  10. Trim excess paper and round corners for back of book
All that is left to do is decorate your book as desired!

Kaisercraft "Lush" Love Book (4x4 inches)

Here I have made the book using the Kaisercraft Lush collection - one of my faves from last year. Goes to show that Valentines and Love themes don't always have to be pink!

Hope these ideas have given you some inspiration! Why not dig out an old collection and make a book like this for a loved one this Valentines Day.

I have a few more examples of albums using the technique on my blog here http://papervinenz.blogspot.com/2011/01/simple-gift-album-idea.html

Don't forget to send it to us at artfullcraftsdt@gmail.com to enter it into our challenge and win a great prize.

Tips and techniques with Dimensional Magic - Tina Connolly

Hi everyone, it's Tina here with some ideas on using Dimensional Magic.

Dimensional Magic is a very versatile product, but many people are unsure how to use it. I use mine all the time, and find it lasts for ages.   For me it's a necessity alongside tape and  ink.  Here are a few of my favourite ways to use it.

1. As a strong glue! It's fantastic for glueing buttons, shells, plastics, acrylic, and metal.   I use it on acrylic albums because I want it to last, and I know it will hold.

2. As a glaze on chipboard or other embellishments to give it a glossy look.
It was hard to capture this, but the doodled flowers, & yellow icing are glossy.  I also highlighted every second line on the wrapper of the cupcake.

3. To create "dew" on your flowers, add a few little droplets on the petals

4. It's brilliant for attaching glitter or Diamond Dust to your projects. Simply put Dimensional Magic where you want the glitter & sprinkle the glitter on. (N.B.  It works great if you dip flowers into the Diamond Dust, gives a nice and chunky look.)

5. To highlight a pattern on paper. It has a pointed tip which allows very precise application of this product.
The dark part of the bracket was covered in Dimensional Magic, and provides a nice contrast  to the flat background.

I highlighted "Sisters"on the title, and parts of the patterned paper.

I've used Dimensional Magic on the guitar,  faux photo corners, and title .

6. To create texture on acrylic albums. Create your own swirls, grid patterns, etc.

7. To attach small items such as beads, microbeads, & Flowersoft.

8. It can be used in the same manner as Glossy Accents (which is used by Tim Holtz in many of his videos, & books)

9.  Creates a cool 3-D effect when you mix glitter into it on your chipboard.  I use a pinhead or toothpick.

10.  You  can make jewellery by using it in the same manner as resin.

11.  Use it to create a resist, allow to dry.  Distress Ink or Glimmer Mist over your paper, then buff off the excess.   (I will do a quick tutorial on this in my DT post next week.)

Tips for use
Do not shake the bottle.  This will create bubbles (use a pin to pop them while still wet)
Use a needle or pin to unclog the nozzle.
It is a little cloudy when wet, but dries clear.
Turn bottle at angle and squeeze gently to release liquid.
Use the pointed tip for easy and even application.
Outline your work, then fill in.
Allow to dry for 24 hours before handling  (It will dry alot faster in the Queensland summers)
Keep out of extreme temperatures or humidity while drying to prevent cracking.

Please let me know if you found this helpful.

Happy Scrapping!
Tina
