Christmas Lights

For some reason the light around me this holiday season has been strong in my aura.

There were the moving lights at the boat parade.

The cosmic lights on my Christmas walk with Michelle in freezing weather
(freezing for Coastal California that is)

The gleaming white smile I had after opening my santa stocking
(which we did late Christmas night)

santa Claus in Apt#6

Santa came to apt#6 and knew exactly what to leave behind.  First, he noticed there was a lot of traffic on the carpet (he knows pilates and yoga are practiced every day) and so he cleaned all the carpets.  Then he got thirsty and went to make some tea but wanted it quicker, so he used magical powers to get a hot and cold purified water tank for the kitchen.  Santa had to leave in a jiffy, but he was happy to see that Liz and Jamie have been nice and that they should always be treated as well as a queen!
Merry Christmas to all!

1st Time at Disneyland!

This was our friend Hoody's first time at Disneyland! She had a blast! When Hoody's sisters asked her how she was getting into Disneyland she replied "Cause I have cool white friends.."
Jamie also made sure she wore a button that said "1st Time at Disney!"

Hoody and Mickey!

Hoody claimed this was her crib..

In line for Toy Story Mania...
It was a great night, we were all super tired the next day but I would not trade that night for anything. There were many stories shared and laughter a plenty, serious bonding with some awesome peeps.

44 degrees

This is what 44 degrees looks like in an apt #6 without a heater or proper insulation.  My bed has 4 blankets: a Hawaiian quilt, a fleece blanket, another fleece blanket and a down comforter duvet.  I am sleeping in socks, since my feet hang off my bed and sometimes out of the blankets, a pair of black and grey polka dot sweats and a green fleece hoodie.  Sweet, Shivering Dreams apt #6.

Love and Commandments talk - Jamie

I was trying to think of a holiday themed way to introduce myself and my family. The only way I can logically explain who I am and what my family support looks like is to tell you about the gift giving we are doing this year. There are my parents and six siblings so we divided up the names in terms of families for gift giving. So I am giving a gift to my brother Justin’s family. He is in Iraq and his Spanish wife and daughter are in Spain during his deployment so I mailed presents to Iraq and Spain yesterday. My other brother Eric lives in Arizona and his family is giving presents to my sister Mindy’s who is married to an English/French/African and they live in Bristol, England. Mindy’s family is giving presents to my parents who live in the Solvang of California. Then because everyone else has to pay shipping prices my two sisters Niki and Crit who live in DC are giving to each other, although Crit will be in Africa doing HIV/AIDS prevention work for Christmas. Since I am the only one livng in California I will celebrate Christmas with my parents. This will be the second Christmas in almost 10 years at my parents house so I am excited to go there.
My family has been spread around for years and so my good friends have become my surrogate family. I had wonderful friends who have been a consistent support and guidance to me. Especially they have been examples of to ways to love that are different than the way I was raised. I love my family but because they and my friends are spread around the world we use technology to skype and text and email to keep in contact.

I adore being apart of this ward family.

I had a great time at the Ward Christmas party last night and I plan to use my participation in the event as an excuse for not preparing my talk. I didn’t have time to fully study the scripture John 14:15 “If you Love me Keep my commandments” so I asked people at the party to help me. First, I didn’t ask the bishopric because they are so busy with other aspects of hosting a party but I do consider them wise men. So in the spirit of the holidays I have brought the three wise men on the stand some presents. First, the bishop always has wise counsel that is point each of us back to the light of Christ and so I brought him a candle to symbolize that light. Second, Simmons was roving around the room to talk to people and be helpful in whatever capacity and his gifts were sweet and priceless so I brought him some chocolate coins. For Wakeham…well he didn’t show so he gets a lump of coal.

In the bishops wise and in touch way he asked that I speak on If you Love Me keep my commandments. As I said I didn’t have time to prepare for the talk, but I do have good people who helped me and then I’ve added a couple of my own thoughts. At the ward Christmas party I saw a few people who asked how I was and I said I’m great but not at all working on my talk for tomorrow and they gave me some good advice.

Jake Harold said I should talk about the first time I ever decided to show my love to Christ and keep his commandments. He suggested I talk about my baptism day. I was baptized three months after I turned 8 during a ward baptism ceremony. There were 4 other girls being baptized and I remember feeling excited and loved. My Dad baptized me and my family and friends were there to watch. I also felt a feeling of renewal. I was literally renewed by the act of baptism and also physically renewed because my fingernail on my right hand had been smashed by my older sister (the one who know lives in England) and it had turned purple and dead for about a month. Then on the morning of my baptism the fingernail fell off and I had a distinct impression that it was a sign that I was about to become fully a new person without the blemish of a broken nail, nor the bad feeling towards my sister. I must have felt like the saints in Mosiah 18:9. I could literally clap my hands and have the desires of my heart filled by following Christ’s commandments.

Later at the party I saw Mindy Pierce and told her I hadn’t thought of my talk yet. She said she would pray for me and think about the topic. After the party I had a voicemail from Mindy with great topics and then she went the extra mile and called me to talk personally about her intimate thoughts on the topic. She told me what it was like to be a mom and to have the unconditional love for her children and to want them to follow the commandments. She related her person scripture study in John 17 during the Great Intercessory prayer. In that prayer the Lord knows he is leaving the earth and he wants his disciples to know he loved them, he had taught them and he was worried that they would not know how to follow his commandments with him there to guide them. Mindy said this is her greatest desire as a parent, to teach her children to follow the commandments because of the great love and joy that can be found in a life of righteousness. Mindy’s words were sweet to hear because I know of her kind heart and her desire to be joyful. It is the same as John 17: 13…that we might have joy which is love.

Mindy also reminded me of Bishop Lang’s wise counsel: If you want to be fully happy keep the commandments fully. If you want to be kind of happy then kind of keep the commandments

As I ran around mailing presents and being santa’s helper for the ward Christmas party I randomly saw a couple from our ward in the Albertson’s parking lot. Ralph and Julie Tuckfield were walking back to their car with their groceries and I saw an example of the act of love. When they got to the car Ralph was on the passenger side of the car to open the door for his wife. He did not know anyone was watching but he was showing a pure form of love. He was following the great commandment in if you love me…keep my commandments and love one another. It is as if Ralph was following the commandment without the Lord or anyone right there to make sure he did so. He was exemplifying the apostle John in 2nd John when John rejoices because of the actions of the elect lady. In 2nd John 1:4-6. I believe Ralph was showing his love to his wife and the lord through the action of service.

As part of my studies I referred to the book The Five Love Languages to explore the kind of love we can show each other. I have deduced that my parents expressed their love to me through Acts of Service and thus it became my primary love language. As an explanation, my parents ran a foster home and did the best they could to enrich the lives of every child they cared for. Now I see that their language of love to me was to give service in the community and in the church to give of themselves to the world as an example of being a light for Christ as they kept his commandments. My understanding of them has grown as I read this book which outlines five languages of love that we use to communicate with those we love. The languages are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. The theory is that we have a primary language, usually the one we are raised with and then we can learn secondary languages to meet the love needs of others important to us. This theory because ingrained in my own relationship with Christ during the Relief Society lesson last week. Kristin McKlusky was teaching about the gifts of Christ and I was listening although I was trying to rationalize WHY the Lord would give us the ultimate sacrifice of the atonement. The gift seemed too large, too much to just freely give. And then the epiphany came that one of the Lord’s love languages was Acts of Service as well as giving gifts. Then I could personalize the atonement to me because my love language is acts of service and now I have a deeper understanding and relationship with the atonement because I understand the process of giving love through gifts of ourselves. That new knowledge is dear to my heart because I truly love the Lord who is my Savior and my Redeemer not because of the books that I’ve read throughout the years to study the act of the atonement, but now I have a stronger testimony because I feel that the Lord and I can communicate on a similar plane.
My father is a very logical man who loved his profession in the aerospace field. He taught through deductive reasoning similar to geometry’s postulates and If/Then statements. As a consequence I too look at patterns in life to find explanations for life’s events. As an If/Then statement the Lord’s commandment to love and follow him becomes a postulate. The scripture in John 14:15 says, “If you love me, keep my commandments” and it is quickly followed with the event that you will enjoy which is the comforter, the spirit of truth. This equation is like the mathematical equations of the world which can be proven by the absolute of numbers. If you love Him, then keep His commandments and He will give you the spirit to abide with you forever.

Finally, in my search to get guidance on my talk while doing all the other chores in my life I talked to my wise roommate Liz. She was studying eternal truths of the gospel and she reminded me of Joseph Smith’s teaching that the knowledge that you seek from the Lord, the more he is willing to give you. And as a result the more knowledge you have the more power you have against Satan. In Romans 8 the law of intercession is detailed. Romans 8:35-39.

My life has been enriched by the people of this ward and my family and my friends who have been examples of Christ’s teachings. I have a firm belief in the principles and teachings of the Lord and his restored church on the earth today. I know that the Prophet, even Thomas S. Monson receives teachings directly from the Lord to guide the Saints through today’s times. The counsel to Love our Lord and keep His commandments is eternal and I strive to live the commandment more fully in my own life.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, my Reedemer, Amen.

Disney Character-Liz

On our latest trip to Disneyland we stopped by a place we have never been to, it's located in California Adventure. As we entered the library of the Beast's castle there were oversized chairs and the magic rose from the movie Beauty and the Beast. There were magic books that would tell you what Disney character you are most like. After taking a short quiz and taking a quick pic, the book displays who you are. Drum roll please......

Yep that's me! Dot! Yeah I know you were expecting a pretty princess but I am ok with Dot, she the younger princess in the royal ant family in the movie A Bugs' Life. She is funny and can hold her own against a grasshopper and she's purple!

Liz's Thanksgiving

I decided to surprise my family by flying to Utah for Thanksgiving this year! My parents were the only ones who knew and it was a challenge to keep the secret for about a month. My sister would ask "now where are you going for dinner?" and "who are you going to be with" My niece Emily was quite concerned that I was going to be alone. So I had to make up a story, I figured a little white lie wouldn't be that bad this time around!
When I showed up at my sister's house their reaction was priceless, it was a great surprise and I had a good time with the fam..

My sister's Emeril inspired turkey dinner..yummy!

The lovely ladies!

Jamie's Thanksgiving

I traveled to Utah for my Thanksgiving holiday.  I did my best to visit my friends equally.  I am grateful that they chauffeured me around, feed me, indulged in my desires and encouraged me to be a better person.  I truly loved every minute of it.  I promise to not wait 4 years between my next visits to Utah anymore.

Sienna and I at Steph's house.  I am holding Graham (Steph's son).  I wished I saw Sienna more than half of one day, but am happy she spent time with her amazing family.

Steph holding Abbie and I'm holding Graham.  Steph asked me to die her hair dark, so I did.  Only the blonde parts turned green!  Not bad.

Steph, Sienna and I met at Throwdown for a yoga class, but found ourselves in the Renegade workout.  It was intense.  It turned out that the instructor was a lady I used to do aerobics with at BYU-Hawaii and she lived two doors down from me on Iosepa.  Small World.

Jason was visiting from New York and I from California and since we are old friends from Philadelphia we spent a day together in Park City.  I was freezing cold in just short sleeves and a sweatshirt so we found hot benches to sit on often.

I made Jason take this touristy photo of me in Park City to prove I was there.  Also, my cute new pants were only $20 at Anthropologie!

The ornaments on Tiffany Lord's tree were inspiring.  Even more so when placed by a two year old and repositione Heidi d for ambiance by the adults.  I met up with old Linoleum House roommates, Tricia and Tiffany for a night of decorating revelry.

Tricia, Tiffany, Eliza, Hiedi and Jamie in front of the well lit tree.
Tricia methodically placed the lights on the tree, twice.  She took a short break while we hung the ornaments.
Nicki G. (who now goes by her grown up name of Nicole Mickelson) is my childhood friend from the backyard.  I spent Thanksgiving with her family.
The Thanksgiving spread had been devoured for a few hours when I found these little cousins hiding under the table so they could snatch Ruffles without being seen.  In a few years they will learn that all food is allowed on the one day of Thanksgiving and you don't have hide from your parents to get what you want!

Infinite Power of Hope

The program for my sacrament service was done by the primary of a ward in the stake. Being is a YSA ward I would not get the opportunity to feel the sweet spirits of children. This was truly a blessing to be able to listen to the words and music of the primary kids.
The lesson in RS was great as well. The topic was The Infinite Power of Hope, the talk given by President Uchtdorf at the last general conference. The entire talk was powerful but some points that really caused me to think were:

"Hope is not knowledge, but rather the abiding trust that the Lord will fulfill His promise to us. It is confidence that if we live according to God's laws and the words of His prophets now, we will receive desired blessings in the future. It is believing and expecting that our prayers will be answered."

He goes on to say:
"The adversary uses despair to bind hearts and minds in suffocating darkness. Despair drains from us all that is vibrant and joyful and leaves behind the empty remnants of what life was meant to be...Hope, on the other hand, is like a beam of sunlight rising up and above the horizon of our present circumstances, It pierces the darkness with a brilliant dawn. It encourages and inspires us to place out trust in the loving care of an eternal Heavenly Father, who has prepared a way for those who seek for eternal truth in a world of relativism, confusion, and of fear."

How great are these words. How truly grateful I am to have the gospel in my life. For the knowledge that I have of an eternal existence. That the Lord has prepared a way for me. As we talked in RS about hope one comment was made that bad things don't happen to good people. Hard things, trials, tribulations, and tests of faith happen to good people. It is the refiners fire. I can not comprehend all that the Lord has in store for me but I have faith that if I live according to His council and the council of His prophets that all will be alright.

century

I've always wanted to ride a bike across America.  In an effort to reach that goal I have ridden around an island (4 days) and up the C&O Canal (2 days).  But now that I have a real bike I can reach that goal even sooner!  To start I am going to train for the Solvang Century (100 miles in one day) next March.   I would love for people to come ride the 100 or 50 mile portion of the most prestigious Century ride with me, or just come along for the post party at my parents house.  I have named the bike "sting" because it is black and yellow....

Latest Conversation

So I was talking with a guy friend(we will call him Stu)the other day. I have known him for while now and he is getting married in December. I was asking him for advice and seeking his wise council as I journey through the dating period in my life. This is how the conversation went:

Stu "Liz I don't understand why you don't get asked out."
Me "Yeah me either."
Stu "You are great. You are funny, witty, can carry on a conversation."
Me "Yeah, but come to think of it, You never asked me out either."
Stu "Oh...um...well.."
And then a sudden change of subject by Stu.

And so that's how it goes...

Jamie's trip to Mississippi to see the Smith Family (sonia-college roommate, spencer-college friend, sonia's husband, ethan-4 year old son)

The 30s are the prime of life
Spencer has been an avid athlete his whole life, or at least the 14 years that I’ve known him. His physical abilities come naturally to him and probably to Ethan too. Sonia has consistently been active in the last 8 years or so and is even more so now that she is has just completed her first triathlon. All this active movement means that we were energetic as a small group every day that I was with the Smith Family. The first morning Sonia and I did Pilates at the local YMCA. Doing Pilates on the machines is a much better work out than the do it yourself at home DVD’s I previously subscribed to. On the other mornings we did Namaste Yoga from the Fit TV channel. Even Ethan kept repeating, “I love doing this mom!” as he downward dogged and storked. On Friday we went for a 12-mile bike ride around Lake Caroline. Riding on the same bike I borrowed from Spencer to ride the C&O canal in 2004 was a reminder that I need to buy a real bike to ride on real bike rides. My little Huffy is no comparison to the luxury and physical ease of riding on a real bike made for long distance rides. By the last night of my trip Spencer was measuring me for a professional bike frame that I could buy and enjoy riding in my own hometown. When we were in Alabama I had the great idea to swim laps in the hotel pool and we all put on bathing suits for a morning work out. But once I went in the freezing cold pool and saw the mass of sand on the bottom of the pool I changed my mind and stuck to the pleasure of the Jacuzzi. But in terms of a triathlon the workouts would not have been complete without a run. The morning of my departure Sonia and I did 3 miles on the Trace (an ancient trail/road that has been used by all generations of people living in the South Eastern United States. We ended up jogging and power walking most of the trek, but we did do intermittent spurts of sprints, high knees, lunges, push-ups and sit-ups on the benches lining the trail. I am energized to become a better life long athlete so I can continue to adventure with the Smiths. In the past we have hiked the Napali Coast and the Grand Canyon and we have run 10k’s together. I want this part of our relationship to grow stronger, just as the rest of our love and enthusiasm has continued to grow.

Lobster fest in Alabama
My first trip to Alabama was Lobster themed. Not only did I turn bright Lobster red sunburn from playing Frisbee on the beach I ate a lobster at a local seafood shack. I first saw a sign for Doc’s Snack Shack trailing from the back of an airplane that towed advertisements across the beach for the few touristy individuals on the beach on November 1st of the year. After Spencer’s run (to Florida and back – 10 miles) we gathered our belongings to drive back to Mississippi. The road we were on dead ended into Doc’s Shack and I excitedly chose to eat dinner in the local dive. Upon entering the lobby of the restaurant (which was no more than a bar and a round table) Ethan and I both approached the coin operated claw machine that usually holds small furry stuffed animals, but in Doc’s held a collection of 4 lobsters submerged in water. The game offered a cooked lobster for those suckers who actually chose to spend $2 trying to grab a lobster. After sitting down at a table with a bread sized burn whole in the tabletop we had to choose which completely fried foods we wanted to eat. When the waitress finally peeled herself away from one of the 4 TVs that were showing the Florida vs. Georgia football game I finally decided to try my luck with the lobster. In the 60 seconds the game gave me to drop the claw I was able to maneuver the claw over a small sized, red lobster. I had hoped to grab the lobster that had the $10 bill attached with a rubber band to its claw, but it was wedged into a corner of the tank. When I did snag the lobster I yelled “I got it!” and pointed to the tank as I turned around for the crowd to praise me. Of course all the patrons and workers were still glued to the TV and only Ethan and Sonia were excitedly smiling at me. So I yelled again louder, twice, “I got a lobster!” Still the reply I got was less than proud and border line annoyed. A guy from the back asked, “What do you want to do with it?” I said, “I’m not going to take it home, I want it cooked!” Within 7 minutes we were all enjoying an appetizer of a freshly cooked, although sparsely meaty lobster dipped in garlic butter and cocktail sauce. Sonia took pictures of the event and I plan to mail them back to Doc’s in Alabama to be added to the picture of the other two people who have caught lobsters this year.

17. Silhouette -Alt-Ctrl-Sleep
18. Take on Me -A-ha
19. 6th Ave. Heartache -The Wallflowers

Compiling this list took more time than I originally anticipated. My musical library is always changing and I am constantly adding new songs to my favorites list. I did notice one pattern in my playlist, no women singers, this is not the first time I had this realization, but I do wonder why? It's a Beautiful Life would be the closet to having a female singer on my list and even then it is a group effort.

My new favorite song is from Brandon Heath, I am drawn to songs that are simple and focus on the vocals and the guitar. And I could not forgot A-ha, when I was in grade school I had the biggest crush on the lead singer Morten Harket, I still remember the music video for Take on Me, the one where the comic book comes to life and the girl ends up in the story, classic!
Peter B, reminds me of good times in Utah, first when I was at Dixie and then with my peeps while in Utah and the outdoor concerts we used to attend.

And as one might have guessed yeah Jack is at the top of the list, I suppose there is something to be said about a man with melodic lyrics and an acoustic guitar..

My infinite playlist

1. Goodnight and Go - Imogen Heap
2. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service
3. Kissing The Lipless - The Shins
4. Penelope - Pinback
5. Tombre la chemise - Zebda
6. DARE - Gorillaz
7. The Guide - Borne
8. Breathe In - Frou Frou
9. Pictures of you - Cure
10. I Will Possess Your Heart - Death Cab for Cutie
11. Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake
12. Love Is Rare - Morcheeba
13. Fragile - Sting
14. No Sleep Till Brooklyn - The Beastie Boys
15. If You could Hie to Kolob - Mormon Tabernacle Choir
16. Damn Hot - Ok Go
17. Kissing The Lipless - The Shins
18. Clark Gable - The Postal Service
19. Cecilia - Simon & Garfunkel

These 19 songs cannot be all inclusive of my favorites of all time, but they are the ones that are played most on my iTunes. Also, they are songs that have a meaning in my life. For example, when singing “Cecilia” I change the lyrics to “Making bread in the afternoon” because it symbolizes my love of making bread and reminds me of my bread and Simon & Garfunkel days in Hawaii. Also, the song “The Guide” is my new most favorite. I already have an imaginary video of myself walking along a path in Central Park lip-syncing to the dreamy lyrics of this new favorite song! My passion for world music is represented by the song from Zebda (it’s French and I don’t know what they say most of the time but I love the beats). I could have picked any Morcheeba song to place on the list, but this one has the coolest video from their original LP.
I was encouraged to put together this list by the great movie I saw last night. The teenagers in the movie went all around NYC trying to find their favorite band playing at a secret spot and the soundtrack for the movie is full of future indie cult classic songs. Of course I already bought the soundtrack from iTunes. I am tagging Liz to post her infinite playlist here too…

The books and DVD collections of both Jamie and Liz

The IKEA bookshelf that is the closest I have to the real bookshelf I want from Crate and Barrel.

The fires in LA brought a considerable amount of soot into apt6 this week.  I had to take all our books off the shelves, dust and return the books to clean off the dust and ash.  I find this type of cleaning more satisfying than doing dishes because the organizational methods of putting books into categories and stacking them on a double sided bookshelf is the closest I will come to being a bookstore owner or librarian.  I was careful to put the children's books on the bottom shelf where little hands can easily retrieve them.  There was also extensive thought put into the Harry Potter books placement in the center or the six foot tall and wide shelf.  This time I put the cooking books a bit closer to the kitchen side of the shelf where the books are often used as a reference, but not a guide, for our culinary creations.  Now I need to find a cathartic outreaching in dusting off my desk and the trinkets I keep in my room.

Vote Yes on Prop 8

In March 2000, California voters passed Prop 22 to specify in state law that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. In May 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled that the statute violated the equal protection clause of the California Constitution. As a result of the ruling, marriage between individuals of the same sex is currently valid or recognized in that state.
Prop 8 amends the California Constitution to specify that only marriage between a man a woman is valid or recognized in California.
Prop 8 seeks to define the institution of marriage. The outcome of this measure on the ballot will effect not only California but the entire country.

Unless Prop 8 passes, California society will soon undergo a profound change in its basic understanding of marriage and family life.
Marriage is sacred, ordained of God from before the foundation of the world. Marriage is not primarily a contract between individuals to ratify their affections and provide for mutual obligations. Rather marriage and family are vital instruments for rearing children and teaching them to become responsible adults.

"Tolerance obviously requires a non-contentious manner of relating toward one another's differences. But tolerance does not require abandoning one's standards or one's opinions on political or public choices. Tolerance is a way of reaching to diversity, not a command to insulate it from examination."

Not only are Peeps freakin' good to eat, they also encourage you to vote..
Real Peeps Vote!

God Save the Queen

To the citizens of the United States of America

From Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except Kansas , which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. The letter "U" will be reinstated in words such as "colour," "favour," "labour" and "neighbour." Likewise, you will learn to spell "doughnut" without skipping half the letters, and the suffix "-ize" will be replaced by the suffix -ise." Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (Look up "vocabulary").

2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as '"like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U. S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter "u"' and the elimination of -ize."

3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse.

5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler, although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. Australian beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full Kevlar body amour like a bunch of nannies).

12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the Australians first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

PS: Only share this with friends who have a good sense of humour (NOT humor)!

Artist Night at Disney.
It was unofficial artist night, in which we learned to draw Donald Duck in California Adventure after which we rode California Screaming. Then at Disney proper we sketched Cinderella's castle with only a sparsely lit sidewalk lamp to light our drawings. They turned out really well considering we could hardly see our own sketches and we were kneeling on hard cement in front of the hundreds of people who sit in front of the castle hours before the fireworks just to get the best seats. We did sit in my favorite plaza outside of Pirates of the Caribbean to sketch the blue, twisty staircase that leads to the secret restaurant above New Orleans Square. But overall the best sketches were those of the castle and thus they are proudly displayed on the apt#6 fridge!

positive thoughts

I agree with my friend Stephanie that there are too few positive thoughts floating around our lives. She has created a blog that will turn into a book next year. Visit her blog to see what has already been created and feel free to email your positive thoughts to her.

Greatest Day Ever!

August 29, 2008
To start off with I had the day off work..the plans in the morning were taken care of by Jamie, which was a visit to Disneyland! That night was the highly anticipated Jack Johnson concert. Jack was playing at an amphitheater, just south of us. When I found out he was coming to town I was so stoked! It's been at least three long years since I have seen Jack perform..

That morning I woke up and did a little yoga, Jamie was walking to the chiropractor and asked if I would like to join her on her stroll, sure why not it was a bright sunny day. Once we arrived back at the apt, we got ready to go to dland. Jamie said we must hurry, we need to be there at 11:45! Um, ok? I wasn't sure why we needed to be there there at a certain time..but I went along with it..

As we were driving Jamie handed me a card that said "we have a birthday reservation at the Blue Bayou at 11:50!" I said to Jamie "See I told you this was going to be the greatest day ever! Thank you!"

We arrived at dland and ran to the main gate, we made it to the restaurant with 5 minutes to spare. I ordered a drink that came with a light-up Tinkerbell clipped to the straw, she glows green, it was pretty rad. We dined on shrimp for starters and I chose the Salmon and Jamie chose the mushroom platter. The Bayou gave me a chocolate custard with whipped cream for a birthday treat. Also they gave us some gold foiled chocolate tokens. I said "oh sure I get the token with a whore on it!" Jamie's response "I believe they are called wenches, not whores.." I laughed and laughed.

Dland was not very crowded, it was great, we rode a few rides and again I schooled Jamie on the Buzz Lightyear ride, and if I'm not mistaken I do believe she tried to block my laser gun, then she said her gun wasn't working, right...

We drove to the amphitheater all the while listening to Jack cd's..just to help set the tone for the evening..

Before the show we walked around the the many booths that Jack brings with him to all his shows, it is called the All at Once community, they are there to help teach and inform about becoming more eco-conscious..
I purchased a new shirt of course and I am just waiting for the right day and place to showcase my merchandise..

The show was awesome! Jack played for two hours and when everyone screamed for an encore he came back out, just him and his guitar and he played three more songs. His melodic voice and poetic lyrics is something everyone should check out..

Thanks to Jack for all the hard work he puts into his concerts and desire to give back to communities and encourage a new way of thinking about our global impact.

Thanks most of all the Jamie, for going to the concert with me and putting up with my almost daily emails, counting down the days till the show. And for celebrating my birthday at the Blue Bayou and helping to make my 30th birthday one to truly remember..
