When things have gone beyond our capacity...

At first, God stands at a distance watching your efforts. He is like the teacher who stands aside while the student writes the answer to his questions. When you shed your attachment to the material world and turn to doing good and serving others, God comes encouragingly near. He is like the sun god who stands waiting outside the closed door, like a servant who keeps his place. He does not announce His presence or knock at the door. He simply waits. But when the master opens the door even a little, the sun rushes in at once and drives out the darkness. When you ask God for help, He is right beside you with hands held out to help you. All you need is the discrimination to pray to God, the wisdom to remember Him.

Why fear...

Dedicated to my beloved family, who are going through a tough time...

When you are afraid of someone or something outside you, remind yourself that the fear is born, fed and fertilized in your own mind and that you can overcome it by denying it. How can fear counter the path of a spiritual aspirant? It can hide in no shadow; it can pester no devotee who has God in his heart. Faith in the God is the impregnable armour that the devotee can wear.

Non-Violence

The meaning of Ahimsa is that either in thought, word or deed, you should not cause harm to anybody. What does Ahimsa signify? It is not merely refraining from causing harm or injury to others. It implies also refraining from causing harm to himself. One who harms oneself cannot avoid harming others. How is this to be ensured? By constantly examining whether his conduct is right or wrong. For instance, in the matter of speech, one must examine whether the words are causing pain to others. One must see that the looks are not tainted by evil intentions or thoughts. One should not listen to evil talk. Hence everyone should see that they give no room for bad looks, bad hearing, bad speech, bad thoughts and actions.

You should also be careful with regard to your food. Excessive eating does violence to the body. Moderation is conducive to happiness. Ahimsa is thus what confers happiness on you. When you realize that God is in everyone, you will practice non-violence.

"Ahimsa Paramo Dharma" - Ahimsa is the most meritorious deed. Non violence is an alternate name for Truth and Love. By following Non-violence, one achieves Love. To follow the path of non-violence, it is necessary to change the mental attitude. Nobody should be harmed by mind, body or speech. By purity of thought, word and deed, one should serve even one's enemies. Overwhelm the bad and jealous by your goodness. Humility is the main quality of those who want to don the mantle of non-violence.

Joy and Sorrow

The most precious ornaments arise from the fiercest of fires.

Joy and sorrow are like two pots carried by a man on a pole. They are inseparable. No one can tell what the future has in store for any individual.

As one thinks, so does one become

Humanness is a marvellous thing. It is boundless and significant, but the term ‘human’ does not refer merely to the physical body. A human being is a composite of body, mind and Atma. To perform actions with the body, to understand them through the mind and to have the Atma as witness to both of these – that constitutes human existence. Action, awareness, realisation – these three exemplify human life. Right from the outset, one should understand the nature and aim of human existence, and lead a meaningful life. It is because one has a mind, that one can be called a human being.

As one thinks, so does one become.
