Introduction to Vassal 40K

By Matt Plonski

My friend Mike came over last night and helped me set up Vassal on my computer. Vassal is a program that allows you to play a virtual table-top wargame on your computer against an opponent on their computer over the internet. They support a wide variety of games. We played 40k, but Mike said he had only used War Machine before.

You start the program and connect to the server on the internet. One player creates a 'room' and then, once in the room, starts a game by picking a 'table' by size and terrain. Both players can build their virtual armies in a scratchpad area. A model is represented by a small picture, called a sprite, which is a top-down view of the model. The sheer amount of sprites available is impressive.

I was playing Dark Angels so I selected the category "Space Marine" then sub-category "Dark Angels." Under that sub-category there are the normal HQ, Troop, Elite, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support. Choose Troop and Dark Angel, and Dark Angel Specialist gives you a guy with a meltagun. Using the right-click context menu you can switch through all of the legal combinations of special weapons, so I choose Plasma gun. The sprite's weapon changed accordingly. Repeat until you have all of your army's models in the scratchpad area.

We then proceeded to play 40k as if we were at a table. You'd think, since the purpose of the program is to play over the internet, you'd have to trust your opponent to tell you what his dice results were. The creators have thought of that. They have a text chat system similar to an instant messenger. Built into the chat is a whole series of dice rolling schemes. They have straight-up dice (D6, 2D6, 3D6, ... , D3, and others), To-hit & Wound (enter # of shots, to-hit number, whether you can re-roll one hit, all hits, or none, and the to-wound number), To-hit & Penetrate (same as previous, but with armor values), and several more.

The user interface is a lot of fun. Simply select a model or group of models, rotate it using keyboard shortcuts or the context menu, then move it forward one inch at a time using keyboard commands. Measuring range is accomplished with a very simple drag line, but you can also put a 'range circle' around most models to see, for example, what is within 24" of your model.

Figure 2 Vindicator checking range to objective
All templates, scatter dice, and other tools are included. My favorite is the scatter die. You place the sprite of the correct template or Deep Striking center model where you are aiming and drop the scatter die right on the center-most point. Right-click "roll die" and either a 'Hit' appears or an arrow pointing in a random direction. If it is an arrow, roll your 2D6 in the chat window, select the die again, and move it 'forward' the correct number of inches. 'Forward' is the direction the arrow is pointing. Then move the blast marker or teleporter to the new location of the scatter die and continue from there.

Figure 3: Plasma Cannon scatters 3"
 Figure 4: New Template Location

Figure 5: Two dead Orks!

Another very powerful ability is the basic 'undo' function. Don't like where you put that Landspeeder? Hit undo until it is back where it started and move it again.

Once we got over the basic learning curve we were cranking through turns much faster than we could have in real life. Clean-up is non-existent. You simply save the game to your hard drive and you are done. You can also have the computer keep a log of the game so you can go back and re-play it. It is a perfect way to generate battle reports. I'm wondering if you could edit the steps into some sort of video. That would be great.

The next thing we are going to try is to create our own sprites so we can make our own units and tables. I'd love to change the Eldar to fit my paint scheme, for example, and it would be a fantastic way to design huge Apocalypse tables and see how deployment would work.

Google Vassal 40k to find out more.

One side note, you can save the game and game log, which enables you to go back and re-watch your game.  After you are done with the log and try to exit the Vassal engine you must make sure you save it again otherwise Vassal will delete both the game and the log.  I’m glad my opponent saved the game as well.  Oops!

Space Hulk Becoming a New Video Game

It looks like we will be treated to a  new video game, as announced on Games Workshop's daily blog.

From Games Workshop:

Storm bolters, power fists, bulky suits of Terminator armour and a claustrophobic corridor full of Genestealers. Space Hulk is one of our classic games that's attracted a cult following over the years and many an evening has been spent by hobbyists pounding up and down cramped passageways blasting Genestealers into bloody chunks. Well there's good news on the horizon because computer games developer Full Control have started work on a new Space Hulk computer game.

You take command of a strike force of Blood Angels Terminators as they make their way through the close confines of the Space Hulk - Sin of Damnation. It's a turn-based game that emulates the look and feel of the board game, but with full 3D animation. Genestealers lurk menacingly while the Terminators use their action points, bolter rounds tear down corridors in overwatch cut-scenes and whole sections of corridor are set alight as the heavy flamer hoses them down. There's a lot of exciting features to this game, which will be coming out next year on PC, Mac and iOS. I'll be sure to post teaser pictures on White Dwarf Daily when I get them. Until then, make sure you check out the Space Hulk website to find out more about it. Now, seeing as Terminators and Genestealers are very much the theme for today, here are a few pictures of them that you've sent in.

The obligatory video is really weak.  This is it?

KICKSTARTER - Dice Rings

I now present you with another awesome KICKSTARTER. I know we're all constantly bombarded by various KICKSTARTERS, so I try to share only ones that stand out above the rest that are gaming related.

So what are we looking at here? Well, Dice Rings, of course!
What are Dice Rings? Well, the clever minds behind this KICKSTARTER have taken spinner rings, which have enjoyed a lot of popularity over the past several years, and are using them to spin random numbers (or other counters). They're available in all kinds for role playing, playing cards, and general purpose gaming. They're also, according to the guys working on them, very statistically accurate as well. I'm definitely picking up several of these for casual play and for some geek style. Please check out what they're working on and what they're offering their investors on their KICKSTARTER page.

Upcoming Horus Heresy Books!

Two new Horus Heresy novels have been announced for 2013.  As always these are must-reads in my book.  They are the most colorful and engaging 40K books, and if you haven't started, go back to Horus Rising and do so!

The Horus Heresy: Betrayer by Aaron Dembski-Bowden

(To be released: April 2013)

The Shadow Crusade has begun. While the Ultramarines reel from Kor Phaeron’s surprise attack on Calth, Lorgar leads the rest of the Word Bearers deep into the realm of Ultramar. Their unlikely allies, Angron and the World Eaters, seem blind to the true goals of the mission, preferring instead to ravage each new civilisation they come across – but where Lorgar might once have chastised his wayward brother, now he seems only to encourage the frenzied bloodletting. Worlds will burn, Legions will clash and a primarch will fall... and the fate of the entire galaxy hangs in the balance.

The Horus Heresy: Mark of Calth - Edited by Laurie Goulding

(Anthology, to be released: August 2013)

Anthology featuring stories from the Ultramar side of the war, for years after Calth. Confirmed are:

1) 'Calth That Was' (Graham McNeill) novella which links Remus Ventanus to the 40k Ultramarines continuity, along with Maloq Kartho before he becomes a daemon prince.
2) 'The Shards of Erebus' (Guy Haley) showing how Erebus learned to do his warp-travel thing, and where he got his athame dagger.
3) 'Unmarked' (Dan Abnett) following Oll Persson as he leaves Calth.
4) 'The Underworld War' (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) showing the expansion of the Gal Vorbak, and how they realise they've been left for dead by their Legion.
5) 'Athame' (John French) which is apparently a very "odd" story, following a particular knife. All we said was that it's not Erebus's knife.

Also confirmed are Rob Sanders, Anthony Reynolds and David Annandale.

More are coming and will be announced soon.  Stay tuned....

Apocalypse Battle in Chicago Dec. 22nd.

From The Big Kahuna, Patric O’Donnell, on the Apocalypse 40K forum.

Assuming the world doesn't end, on Saturday Dec 22nd we will have a WH40K Apocalypse Game!!!

Date: Dec 22, 2012

Location: Wargamer’s Cave: 3665 Nameoki Rd., Granite City, IL 62040
Sign-In Begins: 11:00 AM
Game Starts: 12:00 PM

The following rules will be used for this scenario game:

• Warhammer 40,000, 6th Edition Rules
• Warhammer 40k Apocalypse and Apocalypse Reloaded
• All Official Game Workshop Published FAQs and Datasheets
• All Forgeworld Imperial Armor Publications
• Forgeworld FAQs at my discretion

Note: The order of precedence for rules is as follows

1. Scenario Special Rules/Restrictions (will be published in advance)
2. Games Workshop rules, Datasheets, and FAQs
3. Forgeworld rules and FAQs (Datasheets for Apocalypse overrides Rules in Imperial Armor)
4. Adepticon INAT FAQ

Special Rules:

• Turns will be times. Each player turn will be 45 minutes. Any actions not completed by the end of the turn’s time will not occur. Any actions partially completed at the end of a turn’s time limit are halted immediately and we move on to the next player turn.

• Each player should plan on a 2000 to 4000 point force from any Games Workshop Codex:

• Each player should plan on bringing an army utilizing a somewhat standard force organization (with unlimited points). An additional category will be used, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), which includes Super Heavies and Gargantuan Creatures. Note: WMDs will be limited to 0 – 2 and no WMD may have more than 4 structure points.

HQ 1 – 2
Elite 0 – 3
Troop 2 +
Fast Attack 0 – 3
Heavy 0 – 3
Fortifications 0 - 2
WMD 0 – 3

• Formations will take up only one slot in the force organization. (I.e. a Space Marine player brings 5 Predator Annihilators as part of a Predator Assassination formation. This formation takes up only one slot in the force organization. Note that all 5 predators must maintain a formation coherency restriction, which in this case is 6 inches.)

• Formations that have multiple force types will taken on the highest type in the formation. (I.e. an Ork player brings 130 Orks and a Warboss as part of Da Green Tide formation. Since the highest force type in this formation is a HQ, the Warboss, the formation takes one HQ slot in the force organization. Note that all 131 models in this formation must maintain unit coherency of 2 inches.)

• Each Player may choose one free Strategic Asset from Warhammer 40k Apocalypse or Apocalypse Reloaded. Additional Strategic Assets are allowed only if granted by a chosen formation.

• The Strategic Asset “Flank March” is only allowed for a formation that grants it and then can only be used by that formation, regardless of what the Data Sheet states.

• Pulsarokits and Deathstrike Missiles are limited to 1 per player

Please post or PM any questions you may have and RSVP for your spot on the Apocalypse40K forum.

Forge World New Releases - Squad Sets

Forge World has announced some Horus Heresy inspired bundles just in time for Christmas. Get them while you can, though, as they'll only be offered for a very limited time.

MkII, MkIII and MkIV Legion Tactical Squads Sets

From Forge World:

The mainstay of any Legion is its Tactical squads; serried ranks of bolter-equipped Space Marines capable of crushing almost any foe that stands against them.
We have put together three Tactical squads sets, each of which allows you to build two squads as the compulsory Troops choices for a Legion force. The Legion MkII Tactical Squad, Legion MkIII Tactical Squad and Legion MkIV Tactical Squad sets comprise thirty power armoured Space Marines, thirty bolters and a set of Command Upgrade parts for the relevant armour mark.

Legion Cataphractii Terminators Sets

Every Legion maintains a cadre of veterans within its ranks, and the most experienced of these deadly warriors often take to the field of battle clad in the near-unstoppable protection of Cataphractii-pattern Terminator armour.

The Legion Cataphractii Terminators with Power Fists set and Legion Cataphractii Terminators with Power Axes set each contain twenty Terminators, twenty combi-bolters and the relevant close combat weapon, and a set of Cataphractii special weapons. This allows the Elites section of your Legion force to be bolstered with two powerful Legion Cataphractii Terminator squads.

Legion Contemptor Dreadnought Talon

Terribly wounded and interred within an advanced life-support sarcophagus, the Dreadnoughts of a Space Marine Legion endure for centuries, perhaps even millennia, a tangible link to past glories and an incredibly powerful battlefield presence. Contemptor-pattern Dreadnoughts are immensely powerful, capable of fielding potent weaponry and protected by flickering energy fields.
The Legion Contemptor Dreadnought Talon is a potent Elites choice in the Legion army list, and this set contains two Contemptor Dreadnoughts, a Relic Contemptor Dreadnought, and six weapons: two Power Fists, an Assault Claw, a Heavy Bolter, a Kheres Assault Cannon and a Multi-melta.

It's a pleasant surprise to see Forge World offering these bundles. They are a great way to beef out a Horus Heresy army, build out some great customized squads in regular 40k, or a great way to save some money by going in with some friends. Hopefully we see more of these in the future.

New Puppetswar Tank WIP

Hamster 52 is at it again.  He already produced the Puppetswar Thunderbolt Light Attack flyer and the upcoming large flyer release and now he is working on a tank.  The chassis is separate and meant to be multi-purpose.

Eldar Warlock Titan in 6th Edition

By Andrew Lotz

In preparation for The Big Game III, generals are readying their armies and showpiece models for conflict. Part of that preparation means agreement on which rules to use for rarer pieces—particularly all the older Amorcast models that brought Epic 40k units into regular 40k scale size.

Space Wolves Fortess at Warhammer World

When I was at Warhammer World two years ago, I took photos of this amazing diorama called "Magnir's Crag".  It has also been displayed at Games Day UK, so I thought I would gather my photos and a bunch from GW and show it off.

The stained glass windows, by Studio illustrator Neil Hodgson feature illuminations of famous Space Wolves heroes.

Dave Andrews pressed his massive planetary defence laser into service once more - this time standing watch over Magnir's Crag.

Matt Holland also converted Svorin Jergensen, a celebrated knife fighter shown here tearing open the throat of a Hormagaunt.

The spire was built as a separate piece, using parts from all manner of kits, including Imperial Bastions, The Shrine of the Aquila, Fortress of Redemption and more besides.

Hope you enjoyed the photos!
