Happy Halloween! {2012}

This was the best Ruby & Ellie Halloween yet! Both the girls were very excited, waking up saying "Happy Halloween!" and asking when it would be time to trick-or-treat. I actually worried that the day would be anti-climactic for them because they have been anticipating Halloween Day for such a long time.

We had our morning playdate with Kendall, which helped pass the morning. We played at the park and went to the Halloween story time at the library. Ruby had school and Ellie was too excited to take her nap.

getting settled for story time

After school there was just one hour left before we would leave, and the girls spent the entire hour pretend trick-or-treating around the house to each other and to pretend houses. They practiced saying "Trick-or-treat!" in loud, excited voices, and always remembered to say thank you.

Finally, we packed in the car and drove to Aunt Janae's house to meet Cooper. On the ride Ellie sang, "Happy Birthday, Halloween!" over and over. She was bursting with energy.

The kids started knocking on doors and ringing doorbells a little after six. We were pretty much the first ones out and lots of doors did not open. But that's what's great about going around a townhouse complex - you can hit up lots of doors in a short period of time!

Ellie held up her half-full bucket to me and asked, "Can I eat this all gone when we get home?"
(Ha!)

We went around with Cooper and Annabelle for a good forty-five minutes before I made the girls drive back to our neighborhood for trick-or-treating phase two. We drove straight to Grammie and Papa's house for a quick visit then set out to fill those buckets.

At this point Ruby was going strong but Ellie was losing steam. She was telling me, "I scared. It's too dark." She stopped going up to the doors with Ruby and the other kids, and hung back with me. We made it half-way down the long street, made a last stop at one of my friend's houses, then walked back to the car at Grammie's. (It's a shame, because the weather was Perfect! I was wearing flip-flops and a light sweater, which I didn't even really need. You don't get trick-or-treating weather that good more than once every four or five years, if you'e lucky!)

When we got home Jeff had just gotten home from work. Jeff took Ruby to the houses around the cul-de-sac. We put candles (and sparklers!) in our jack-o-lanterns and handed out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Ruby told us, "I have freakin' lots of candies!"
She let me know I could have any of her candy that I want any time. What a sweetheart!

Ellie told Jeff, "This is MY candy!" and told Ruby, "These are your candies, those MINE!"
She's a little protective of her stash.

Happy Halloween to our family and friends that we didn't get to see this year!

October playdates

Between Grandma's visit and Daddy's time-off we didn't have as many friend playdates as usual. The weather was awesome for most of the month, so the playdates we did have were mostly outdoors. Yay for fall weather!

Thanks friends! Let's hope for a mild November!

October outings

Jeff worked eleven days in a row at the beginning of the month, but thankfully most of that time was while Grandma and Aunt Barbara were here. Then he took a few days off last week so he had the whole week off to hang out with us! These are some of the things we did together this month:

Monday, October 1: Scheels
The new Scheels sporting goods store in Sandy opened and we took the girls to check it out. We'd been in a Scheels in Omaha, but I was surprised at how many fun things they had to do there! They have a ferris wheel, lots of "photo opp" stations, a huge tropical fish aquarium, a children's play area, and other interactive games throughout the store. They gave everyone a free Scheels baseball hat, and everything is free except the ferris wheel, which is only $1 per person. Ruby didn't want to ride so Ellie and I rode it together. I personally don't care for the ride, but I had a little fun since Ellie was so into it.

Ruby did not like posing by the dead animals

Ruby didn't mind posing next to this less-lifelike bear

Thursday, October 4: Pennies by the Inch
On Wednesday night I was in charge of the combined Young Women's activity and we did the "Pennies by the Inch" fundraiser for Primary Children's Medical Center. The next day I had Ruby help me sort out and count all of the coins that were donated. Ruby was a big help and did an awesome job counting and stacking coins. We ended up with 700 pennies. I thought they were so pretty all stacked together - it made me want to do some penny art!

Sunday, October 14: Pie!
I made my first apple pie for the fall season. It was scrumptious!

Thursday, October 18: Cecret Lake Hike
We wanted to get one more good hike in for the season before it gets too cold and snowy. We waited until late morning to head up to Alta since it was a freezing cold morning. It was chilly when we got to the trailhead but by the time we reached the lake it was sunny and slightly warm.

This turned out to be the best hike of the season. Ruby hiked all the way up and down without having to be carried once! She was really proud of herself. We made it to the lake in record time, though they were actually slower on the hike down.

where the trail wasn't muddy there were patches of ice; the girls got a kick out of stomping the ice to make it crack

playing hide & seek
(I love how they think we can't find them when they just have their eyes covered - or in Ellie's case - her eyes closed and nose covered)

Ruby stood like this and said, "Take my picture!"

We were surprised to find the lake was full! The last time we were there the girls built their mud volcano down on those rocks that are underwater now! We had thought we'd see if we could find the volcano or Jeff's "scrabber" rock that he hid, but all of it was submerged.

Tuesday, October 23: Thanksgiving Point Children's Garden
We let Ruby choose the family activity and she asked to go to the Children's Garden. It was forty degrees outside but we went anyway. We were the only ones there. The wind was blowing and it was freeeeezing! The girls really didn't seem to care but I was miserable!

Wednesday, October 24: Jump Around Utah
We took the girls to breakfast at our favorite Original Pancake House (fun for us) and then went bouncing (fun for them). We bounced and climbed and went down slides. The girls loved having Daddy there to share in the fun.

Thursday, October 25: First Snow!
We woke to a snow-covered yard and the girls begged to suit up right away. They had a blast making snow angels, building a snow volcano, throwing snow at each other, and eating snow. Ellie didn't want to play as long as Ruby did; Ruby was so sad when Ellie wanted to go inside.

I heard Ellie crying and found her out front making snow angels with Ruby. I went to her aid and she was yelling, "I need gloves!" Oops - I forgot about gloves!

Friday, October 26: City Creek
I don't remember what we did in the morning, but after we dropped Ruby off at preschool Jeff, Ellie, and I drove downtown to visit the new West Elm store at City Creek. We love West Elm and are pumped that we don't have to pay shipping anymore! The store was adorable; it was so cool to see everything in person instead of on the pages of the catalog!

Ellie clearly liked hanging out with us - without Ruby. She was in a fabulous mood - happy to walk around the mall, going up and down escalators and elevators. She especially enjoyed West Elm. She wanted to touch everything and danced through the store like she owned the place. We had to hover closely to make sure she didn't break anything!

I adored the gorgeous displays!

Well, I guess that's it for October. The rest of our activities will appear in the Halloween post!
