Children's Story

Every Sabbath, it never fails, David invites both young and old up to the front for the children's story. Today he got a big surprise!! A slip of paper was passed around this morning during Sabbath School and this is what it said: "Sh! It's a Secret for Pastor Austin. Pastor Austin always asks for our church members to come forward for the children's story. Since this will be the next to last sermon we hear him preach and possibly the last children's story, we thought it would be nice if the ENTIRE congregation went forward to hear the children's story. What a surprise this would be for Pastor Austin. So come on up and let's all get cozy and squeeze in to the closest pews to the front to hear the story. Thanks!

What a great idea! Seeing his reaction was priceless!

Candles

33. That's me. And very blessed!

Breakfast candle in my toast.

Supper candle in my carob/peanut butter no bake cookie.

Didn't have to make any meals today. Spent quality time with my family. Ran some errands all by myself. Ended with the start of the Sabbath. A very nice birthday, indeed.

Exercises for the Nose

This came about all because we were doing some take-home assignments for Eager Beavers/Little Lambs. Hmmm... They were using their noses to push an orange across the room!

Snow Days...

We finally got our first big snow of the season. Kind of late, actually. The rest of my family has been hoping for snow for months! Now that it's December, I don't mind at all...I'd kind of like to have a white Christmas. Since we live in this part of the country, I kind of expect it!

Although it was very windy and cold, we went out and played in the snow for a short while. Here's the proof.

Thinking Faces

Here are their "thinking faces." Really whenever they're trying to think of something, this is what they look like! :)

The Snowmen

Earlier this week our homemade Advent Calendar said "make a Christmas craft." So we made snowmen.

Countdown to Christmas

Our very homemade advent calendar. Yes, I'm cheap. And no, I don't have a lot of time. So it's very simple but they look forward to it every morning. So far we've done things like reading a Christmas story, drinking apple cider, coloring a Christmas picture (or 1000), choosing treats from the goodie bag, learning a new Christmas song, and as the days go by they will open flaps that say things like drive around and look at Christmas lights, put together a gingerbread house, make a Christmas card and send, do something nice for someone else, and many other fun Christmas things. And very soon it will be Christmas...

Little Monkey

Here Elijah enjoys his first whole banana. Usually I cut them up in pieces for him but he got lucky this time. I had peeled a banana for Dillon actually, and without thinking, I handed it to Elijah. He dove right in and enjoyed the whole thing!

Pomegranates

The last time I remember eating a pomegranate is when I was 4 or 5 and lived in California. I remember eating it out on our driveway because it was so messy! Well, this week I decided it was time for my kids to have a pomegranate adventure. But before we dove into this juicy fruit, I decided to check on the web for the best way to eat a pomegranate. So glad I did!! I found a video showing me how and in the end it was not nearly the mess I anticipated!

Here's the link to the youtube video. It sure saved me a lot of mess and we LOVED eating our pomegranate! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgdz1QIn64A

Green Drink

Green Drink makes a happy baby! This time it had frozen blueberries and cherries, bananas and some sort of juice combined with the kale. Very yum!

Standing...Standing...

All the boy wants to do is stand! And he's even moving a bit while holding on to the furniture. I wouldn't call it cruising yet, but he's moving. No, he doesn't even crawl yet...I'm thinking he just might skip it altogether. We'll see. But his goal in life right now is to be on his feet!

Mama's "Get Well Soup"

Everyone in the family, except me, has had some form of sickness this week so I got the idea (from a children's book) that I would make them some 'get well soup.' I have a lentil soup recipe that I LOVE (thanks, Joelle!) so I decided to twist it up a bit and make it into my 'get well soup.' Onion and garlic both are suppose to aid in getting well and boosting immunity so throw as much in this soup as is tolerable.

Mama's Get Well Soup
1 C lentils
5 C water
1 onion, diced
4-8 fresh cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 tsp ground thyme
1/4 tsp oregano
1 T salt
1 pint canned tomatoes
4 C fresh spinach

Rinse lentils thoroughly. Combine all ingredients except fresh spinach in a large pot. Bring to a boil and cook for 45 minutes to an hour. Add fresh spinach about 5 minutes before ready to serve. Serve hot with your favorite bread! Yum!

All Part of the Job

We don't typically encourage our kids to climb or stand on the counters, however, this morning they were unloading the dishwasher together and since I was in the middle of some other chore, they took care of business without any help.

Apple Strudel

This was actually part of our Germany theme...but it fits right after the Apple post. There were no leftovers...that says it all!!

APPLE STRUDEL (modified from cooks.com)
3 lg. apples
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. dark seedless raisins
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or pecans
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
Approximately 3/4 c. dried fine bread crumbs
1/2 lb. phyllo (1/2 box frozen phyllo pastry)
1/2 c. melted butter
Powdered sugar

Thaw frozen phyllo dough as directed on package. Grease large cookie sheet. Peel and thinly slice apples. Toss apples in bowl with next 6 ingredients and 1/4 cup bread crumbs. Tear 2 pieces of wax paper approximately 24 inches long and overlap them lengthwise and tape. This will be your work surface.

Keep phyllo dough covered with moist clean towel once it is opened and thawed. The paper thin dough dries out quickly. On wax paper, place each individual phyllo pastry sheet one on top of the other and brush each sheet with melted butter. Sprinkle scant amount of bread crumbs on every other sheet (you'll use approximately 12 sheets of phyllo dough.)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spoon apple mixture on prepared phyllo dough and roll phyllo dough around apple mixture jelly roll fashion. Pinch ends to prevent leaking of apple mixture during baking. Place on cookie sheet seam side down. Brush roll with melted butter. Bake 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Cool approximately 30 minutes and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Slice and serve warm or cold. Makes approximately 10-12 servings.

Apples, Apples, Apples

Okay, so this was a while ago, but I just wanted to post something from one of the themes that Chaeli has been learning about in Kindergarten. First was Creation and then we went on to Apples. And here is some of what we did for two weeks of Apples! It was quite a fun two weeks!

Will it float?
