Ok so having three brothers has prepared me to see alot of injuries generally that involve broken bones and/or excessive bleeding. I've see a lot and as such, most medical things don't bother me or really phase me but this past Thursday that all changed.
It all started on Wed. night when Paityn was restless causing me to wake up. I went and checked on her and noticed that she was insanely hot. I gave her some motrin and stayed with her. She was very thirsty so I continued to give her water. At about 5:30 she was back to being super hot. I held her and tried to calm her until I could give her more motrin (i had no tylenol to alternate for her) for the fever. She then started to shake and shiver with her teeth chattering. I kept holding her until about 6 and gave her more motrin. she relaxed a bit but not much. at 8:30 I called her Ped's office and made an appointment for 9:30 with a different dr than her usual because he had no openings.
We went to the appoint. and she had a fever of about 102.7 at that time. They checked her for Strep Throat and for a UTI. The UTI test came back positive so they gave us an antibiotic prescription and sent us home.
We left there and went to fill the prescrition. We were at Walgreens for about another 20 minutes and then headed home. We got home about 11:30 and Paityn went and laid down on the couch. She was starting to shiver again so I checked her fever and it was 103.5 so I gave her another dose of motrin. at 11:40 I sat down next to her while on the phone with my mom. I heard her making a funny sound so I turned at looked at her to see her completely blue and choking. I hung up on my Mom and grabbed Paityn. She was completley limp and her eyes rolled back in her head. Her face, lips eyes and even eye sockets were completely blue and she wasn't breathing. She had gone unconscience. I thought she might have thrown up and was choking so I flipped her on her stomach and nothing came out. I then called 911. A call I have hoped never to make. The dispatcher had me do CPR specifically mouth to mouth. Paityn had tried to swollow her tounge during the seizure and was then choking on it. I moved her tounge and began breathing for her. Austin was good enough to put Daisy outside, unlock and open the front door and wait for the police, fire and paramedics for me. When the Office arrived he radio-ed the Paramedics and had them put their lights on in order to get here faster. Once they arrived things get a little blurry, there was so much going on. They hooked her up to oxygen, took her vitals and tried to revive her. She continued to be unconscience so they loaded her in the ambulance and decided that Primary's was to long of a drive and that Paityn needed a hospital immediatly. We opted for Riverton Hospital since we are 5 minutes away and they now have a pediatric wing that has finally opened.
Once we arrived they hooked her up to a bunch of machines to check her vitals and monitor her. They didn't do any tests at this time, they said she had a Frebrille Seizure and that they are somwhat common and don't cause any problems of any kind long term. They watched her for about 2 hours and then sent us home because she seemed to be doing well.
We were home for about 1 1/2 hours when she began shivering again. I told Nathan that this is what happened the first time so we dosed her with Tylenol trying to stop or prevent the seizure from beginning. It didn't work. Within 10 minutes of the tylenol she had seizure #2. Same problems but this time we knew what was happening and what we could do for her. Once again when the seizure ended we had to pry her jaws apart, move her tounge and give her mouth to mouth. Instead of calling for an ambulance we decided it was faster to take her ourselves. Nathan drove (like a father in peril) and we made a 5 minute ride in about 2 minutes and hit every light on red. Not bad driving!!! The ER immediatly began tests and the Dr kept flowing in. They admitted her to the Children's Unit about 30 minutes after that. They ran tests for everything and talked about doing a Spinal Tap for Menengitis. They orignally thought that it was a Blood infection that without immediate treatment she would die. Not the words any parent wants to hear.
After the first day they began treating her for a Staff infection, they didn't know which one still but they felt that what she had was from the "staff family". On Saturday (day 3) test results started coming back and they all pointed to a very rare form of bacteria from the Strep family. This particula bacteria is a hospital born strain and thus is not transferred from person to person. So we finally knew what she had but not one clue as to how she got it! They hooked her up to Amplicillian to kill it and instead Paityn had an awesomely bad reaction to the Amplicillian now indicating that Paityn is allergic to Penicillian. YAY! Seriously could anything else go wrong. So the Dr.s changed her meds however the Hospital didn't have any in the pharmacy so we had to wait as a nurse drove up to Primary's to get it. She got back just in time for her next dose and we hooked Paityn up. She began doing well however the fever still wouldn't go away so we had to spend yet another day in the Hospital. Finally Sunday morning the dr.s said we could go home if we felt compfortable having Paityn in our complete care. We did so home we went.
Once home Paityn's fever finally started to go back to normal with no meds other than her antibiotic. Great News!!! Then later last night (sunday) she started looking really sick. She was super pale but her eyes were sunken in and she had the dark rings around her eyes. We checked her fever and instead of it being high it was low! Now we are dealing with a "reverse fever". This is when your body is cold internally and you can't heat it up! They don't make drugs for this so we have to suffer through this in hopes that it stops soon. The hospital is sending us to her Ped's office this after noon to make sure she's going to be ok and that she's still hydrated enough. I guess we'll see. I want to thank you all for your help, love, prayers, and friendship. This has by far been the worst experience for Nathan and I to have delt with and watch Paityn go through. I guess we now know a little of how Nathan's sister felt watching her oldest being life flighted out of Powell so many years ago and having to go through the worst with your childs life in the balance. I had no idea that a UTI could pretty much kill a child. The dr.s did say that it's not so much the UTI as it is the bacteria that caused it all. The crappy thing is that the Strep isn't the regular kind that settles in your throat, it settles in your organs. Here's hoping that Paityn doesn't get Rheumatic Fever!!! Thanks again to you all.
