Frank's Injury

Just as we were finishing our breakfast and getting ready to head home from Vegas we got a phone call about BJ's dad. He was outside pruning his fruit trees and fell off his ladder. He landed on the curb of the sidewalk next to his yard. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He broke his T5 vertebrae (its just between the shoulder blades and behind the heart) in two spots. He broke 6 ribs in 10 spots, and had a partially collapsed lung. He has been in the ICU for the last 9 days and was just moved out of the ICU today.

Last Tuesday, he had surgery on his spine. Normally for that surgery the surgeon would go in from the front and the back. But due to the location of the break on the spine (behind the heart) they had to go in through his side. The side of all the broken ribs actually. The broken ribs are what Frank is suffering pain wise from the most. So I can only imagine what it must feel like after surgery. They had to cut up his muscle and pull it apart and the ribs out of the way so that the spinal surgeon could get to the spine. Then they removed the T5 vertebrae completely and put in a “cage” in its place. … OUCH!

BJ sat at the hospital with his mom all of Tuesday and kept her company during the surgery and then kept the rest of us updated via text. When Frank was out of surgery and starting to wake up, BJ said he was in so much pain he was moaning and trying to talk but couldn't very well. He could hardly breath because it hurt his ribs so much to fill his lungs with oxygen. The nurses were hustling around to get him situated and hooked up to all of his I.V.'s BJ said that they just seemed like they didn't know what they were doing tough. He was so frustrated with them and to see his dad suffering in so much pain. At one point all of the nurses stepped out of the room and BJ's mom told him to quickly give him a blessing. He did and during the blessing Frank seemed to calm down some and breathe just a little better.

Just after BJ administer to his dad, he said a prayer to himself asking Heavenly Father that if it were possible to share with his dad whatever strength and lung strength that the Lord was going to give to BJ that he could give it to his dad and BJ would take whatever was left. BJ came home and told me this and I at first found it to be a strange request but then thought it was sweet and didn't think much of it after that. Well, the next morning BJ woke up incredibly sick! I still didn't think much of anything until we got word that BJ's dad was doing well and his oxygen levels were better than they have been since being in the hospital. My eyes filled with tears when BJ told me this and we hugged. We knew that Heavenly Father had heard our prayers and a little miracle had taken place.

Frank has a LONG road to recovery ahead of him. He will have to wear a brace that looks like a turtle shell for three months. And he is not allowed to bend, twist, or lift for a year! BJ and his siblings have been frantically working at their parents house to put in a shower for them. In all of BJ's growing up that family of six children shared 1 bathroom and there was no shower. EVER! Until now. BJ says as soon as he is done putting in the shower he is going to strip down naked and be the first to shower in that house. It's been a long time coming.

Happy Easter!!

Today is Easter and it was just a gorgeous day! The easter bunny came and spoiled the girls as usual. A few days ago Brooklyn asked if the easter bunny was real. I had already decided that the next time she asked something along those lines that I would tell her the truth. So I told her. I have been so worried that she would be crushed to find out the truth and that the magic of these holidays would be lost for her. But I was happy to find that this was not true. The way I explained it to her was that just like she likes to be sneaky around the house and spy on us, well so do I. I told her it is so fun to fill their baskets and hide the eggs and see how excited they are in the morning. She understood right away! I told her to NOT tell Hannah, because she still believes and that this would be our little secret and that we can smile and wink at each other when Hannah talks about the Easter Bunny. She loved that.
Brooklyn was so cute this morning. She woke up first and then woke me up. Hannah slept in quite awhile because we were all out late at the RSL game last night. Brooklyn asked me so many times if she could wake up Hannah. I of course said no, but then finally asked her why she wanted to wake her up so bad. She said, “because I can't wait to see the look on her face!” . I'm glad she is still excited about Easter and not too disappointed to find out that “bunny doesn't really hop”.

Vegas BABY!!

About a week and a half ago, BJ and I went to Las Vegas with Cameron and Brooke. There is a security conference down there every year and we usually go down. No kids! We left the kiddos with Steve and Sydney Savage (Steve works for BJ and his wife Sydney is Cameron’s niece). We stayed at the 'M Resort' which is a super nice 4 star hotel about 10 min south of Vegas. One of the main reasons we booked this resort was for their incredible pools. My plans for the 2 ½ days that we were there included food, sleep, pool, and more sleep. Well, to our disappointment the pool was closed the entire time we were there. I was so bummed. However, to my absolute surprise BJ surprised me with a $300 shopping spree. It was awesome. So that’s pretty much what I did. SHOP! And I spent every last penny.

Gingerbread Houses

We are making a list and checking it twice.  Every year we make a list with the kids of what kinds of things we want to do together as a family during the Christmas holidays.  Some activities are commercial and some spiritual.  One of our favorites is building and decorating gingerbread houses.
TA DA!! Our delicious masterpiece

BJ's many talents!!

I have to say that I am pretty sure I have one of the most amazing and talented husbands around.  There isn't anything that BJ can't do.  If there is something that he wants then there is no stopping him once he puts his mind to it.
Here are just a few of the many amazing things he can do.
Building a trailor from scratch.  Welding and all!!
BJ is currently serving in the bishopric in our ward and is over the youth.  He wanted to find a way to get to know some of the youth better and have an opportunity to talk with them.  He decided to use wood from a crate that he had laying around from a shipment he got at work and make long boards.  He even made a press for it.  He then invited any of the young men that were interested in making one to come over.  The boys were able to design there own and build it entirely on there own.  Under BJ's supervision.  It was a huge hit with the youth, and we now have The Crate Board Co.
Mountain Biking with the guys.
Cameron Roden (business partner), Kevin Neve (employee/cousin), Steve Savage (employee), BJ
Oops! I'm just glad he has that helmet on.

Can you guess what is another passion of his?  I'll give you a hint.  It always seems to be on his mind...

This is BJ and his dads boat "Uncle Herkemer".  BJ loves to fish

These are just a few of the many reasons why we love BJ.  His is an awesome, talented, fun dad & husband!

Temple Square Lights

Every year we plan to go to temple square to see the lights, and most of the time we never make it there. And now I remember why.  It's crowded and freezing.  However, it's beautiful.  We had a good time!

Halloween 2011

I love Halloween!  And so do our kids.  Which kid doesn't though, really?  One night BJ and I were out on a date and discussing whether or not we should dress up this year.  We went back and forth on different ideas, and then finally decided on this...
Mr and Mrs. Incredible!!
We are either incredibly awesome or incredibly stupid.  I haven't decided yet.
Just showing that I am elasta-girl!
