The Little Match-Seller

by Hans Christian Andersen (1846)

It was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, that they had belonged to her mother, and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling along at a terrible rate. One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her even a penny. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along; poor little child, she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not.

Lights were shining from every window, and there was a savory smell of roast goose, for it was New-year’s eve—yes, she remembered that. In a corner, between two houses, one of which projected beyond the other, she sank down and huddled herself together. She had drawn her little feet under her, but she could not keep off the cold; and she dared not go home, for she had sold no matches, and could not take home even a penny of money. Her father would certainly beat her; besides, it was almost as cold at home as here, for they had only the roof to cover them, through which the wind howled, although the largest holes had been stopped up with straw and rags. Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Ah! perhaps a burning match might be some good, if she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, just to warm her fingers. She drew one out—“scratch!” how it sputtered as it burnt! It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed to the little girl that she was sitting by a large iron stove, with polished brass feet and a brass ornament. How the fire burned! and seemed so beautifully warm that the child stretched out her feet as if to warm them, when, lo! the flame of the match went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the half-burnt match in her hand.

She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame, and where its light fell upon the wall it became as transparent as a veil, and she could see into the room. The table was covered with a snowy white table-cloth, on which stood a splendid dinner service, and a steaming roast goose, stuffed with apples and dried plums. And what was still more wonderful, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, to the little girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but the thick, damp, cold wall before her.

She lighted another match, and then she found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas-tree. It was larger and more beautifully decorated than the one which she had seen through the glass door at the rich merchant’s. Thousands of tapers were burning upon the green branches, and colored pictures, like those she had seen in the show-windows, looked down upon it all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the match went out.

The Christmas lights rose higher and higher, till they looked to her like the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it a bright streak of fire. “Someone is dying,” thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only one who had ever loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going up to God.

She again rubbed a match on the wall, and the light shone round her; in the brightness stood her old grandmother, clear and shining, yet mild and loving in her appearance. “Grandmother,” cried the little one, “O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large, glorious Christmas-tree.” And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day, and her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God.

In the dawn of morning there lay the poor little one, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall; she had been frozen to death on the last evening of the year; and the New-year’s sun rose and shone upon a little corpse! The child still sat, in the stiffness of death, holding the matches in her hand, one bundle of which was burnt. “She tried to warm herself,” said some. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory she had entered with her grandmother, on New-year’s day.

Our new addition

Panda unfortunately has decided that he doesn't want to start anymore, especially in any rainy or wet conditions.  The cold I guess also is rattling his little bones and brakes, so we opted for going out and getting ourselves another cute little 4X4.  We picked this little bugger.  Jimny Cricket is his name.  This isn't an actual picture of where I live or our little car (though it is the same make, model and color) but it does give you all an idea of what we got.   I haven't had the heart to sell little old Panda.  I think I am going to become a mechanic and try to get him running again.  Any help would be welcome.  Also pack little suitcases if you want to fit in it when you come out to visit.Suzuki_Jimny_DDiS

I snowed an early little storm while we were in Utah, so Angel, David and Pops ran up to see the new fallen snow.

Here I am wading through freezing water trying to make it closer to the Zion Narrows.

My place

bryce08 050 I think everyone has that one special place where everything just feels like it should.  Mine is here in the desert, with the vast land spread before me and the enormous sky covering me like a soft blanket on a chilly autumn night.  It just feels right.  And in the middle of that beautiful territory I find myself enchanted with Delicate Arch.  There is no other place where I have felt as at peace with life as here.  It hasn't ever mattered if it has been raining, snowing or wind gusting through me, it just feels like it is my place. Here are some photos of our last trip out.

There is no place like home....

We just got back last week from a month at home.  It consisted of bike rides on old railroad tracks, visits to some National Parks, and plenty of family dinners with early trick-o-treating and pumpkin carving contests.

Zion08 236

The only thing it didn't have enough of (besides money) was time to be with my friends and family one on one.   I am sorry that things didn't work out better.  One month a every couple of years just doesn't cut it.  For those I did get to see it was great.  I will be putting pictures up on the blog in the next week.

The Route of the Hiawatha

house 032 After meeting up in Wallace, Id. with Patrick, Shannon, Kaitlyn, Porter and the next little unborn Carlson, Dad, Angel and I enjoyed a beautiful bike ride with them on the Route of the Hiawatha.  It was an adorable little town and a gorgeous ride over trestle bridges and through long dark tunnels (flashlights are a must) on the old train rails.

Home Improvements??????

Time to get started again getting the house into shape.  This time it is our bedroom that gets the makeover.  Just some new paint, a new window, a new sound insulated wall, and my favorite, a brand new closet.  We should have this done about 5 weeks ago, so I am thinking it will be done it the next few weeks.house 007 house 006

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall......

DSCF1075

Humpty dumpty had a great fall....has been going through my head for the last few weeks. ............ All the kings horses and all the kings men.........You know, one of those annoying things that gets trapped in your head and you just keep ......couldn't put Humpty dumpty back together again........hearing over and over again.   I must admit there were times in the last few weeks that I didn't feel like I was ever going to be put back together again.... but I have my little garden that seems to have been able to do the job the king's men and horses couldn't quite figure out.

Everything has started to grow like wildfire.    I find myself making anything and everything possible with zucchini.  If anyone has any good recipes pass them along this way.  I have been bestowing zucchini bread upon anyone and everyone who helped out the past month.   The only problem with baking this time of year is the heat.   Makes the apartment so hot and stuffy, but at least it smells good.

Almost there....

On Sunday I was once again in brutal pain and Angel took me to the hospital. ( I have never seen him drive like that! )  The D&C didn't seem to be as complete as we had expected, therefore the pain.    I am now at home, hopped up on medication and quite loopy but feel that things are getting better (at least I feel no pain).   On Friday I have a doctor's appt. and I should know if I can get back to a normal life or not.

To my family and loved ones.....

Hello there everyone,

I don't know about you but I had a great time at dinner last night.  Dad was wearing a blue shirt and laughing, Rob was pouring wine in the glasses that Monique got out of the cupboard, Dave was  eating chips and salsa and hiding plastic bags under fruit bowls as Dan made either stew or Phad Thai.  I am not really sure, as my point of view was from laying down on the wood floor between the two white shelving units smiling.  I didn't see any of the kids, but I could hear Patrick giving Dave crap about something they had heard on NPR...... Then suddenly I woke up and saw all these people looking down at with with their surgical masks and hair bonnet like dealios.  Scared me to death.  I guess when you come to you get the big time shivers, and I did, and then asked the anesthesiologist if she could please send me back to dinner with my family.

I had been in excruciating bouts of pain since Monday, and although I really wanted to be strong and get through this process naturally I didn't feel like I could hold out much longer. (I really did think I was a bit stronger, but turns out I am a bit of a wuss) And suddenly living in a small town really started to pay off. Angel called a friend of ours, who called the doctor, she said to get to the hospital quickly.  I got some pain meds which helped ease the pain (what a beautiful thing)  and within a couple of hours was in surgery, or as I experienced it, at dad's having a delightful dinner.  So I had a few firsts yesterday, first operation, first hospital stay, first pain meds.  I feel extremely lucky at the way I was treated.  I knew both of my nurses, since I had worked with them in the past.  The anesthesiologist is a friend of a friend and we finally met yesterday (she is as delightful as I have been told), the doctor had studied in Colorado so she talked to me the whole operation in English, and I had my good friend Maria who is a surgical instrumentalist with me the whole time watching over me just like an angel.  It was kind of  like all these people that I had known during my 17 years here just came out of the woodwork and took care of me.

I have always thought that I was alone in this country and I have finally been given the opportunity to see how mistaken I have been.  Natalia and Guissepe without saying anything have been taking care of my garden (not an easy task).  Dora called from Alcala de la Selva to tell me to hang in there, but not too be too strong in this matter. A card was sent from Nick who is fighting in Afghanistan,  Numerous phone calls from all our friends wishing us the best even a phone call from Montse Pala (we haven't spoken in about 5 yrs)..  I even got a sweet peck on the cheek from barman Jaime at our favorite place to hang out,   I am amazed.DSCF1064

But our biggest allies in this ordeal have been our friends David and Maria, who have been there making sure we were ok physically and emotionally.  They have brought us food, fresh raspberries and support.  And Maria who works as an ER nurse made sure I was treated like a queen.  Not like a princess, no, like a queen!!  She took my blood (Dad I have got your kind), got me my own room, made sure people I didn't want to know about all this stayed far away, and stood up for me in a few occasions.  David kept Angel busy during the surgery, got him some food and stayed with us for a while after the surgery to make sure everything was fine.  It was great to have friends that were there for the bad, not just the good.

I now am home doing what my body allows me to, which isn't too much at this point.  It is hard for me to just sleep and sit around as anyone who knows me well can imagine, I think I have watched every episode of every show that has ever been on TV.  I still however look forward the my last few episodes of 24.  What is going to happen to President Palmer??????

Anywho...I just wanted to share a little of what has been going on here.  I hope you are well and working hard.  I want all houses completely finished by the time we come out!!!  I can't wait to see you and finish our delightful dinner.

"Life is mostly glorious, but it is never fair"

So after being pregnant for almost 8 weeks  I had my ultrasound with the doctor this morning and as we feared there wasn't a heartbeat and the fetus hadn't grown in the past week.  It is heartbreaking news that makes you wonder about a lot of different things.   I just keep telling myself that this was meant to be, as life has a funny way of teaching you what you need to learn.  I suppose some changes are in store for us.  I will keep an update here on the blog of all our new activities.

On a lighter note we will be flying  to Utah on Sept. 20th and flying out on October 19th.   I look forward to seeing everyone and enjoying the fall weather in the states.

My little piece of heaven

A gardening buddy of mine took this picture the other day of me and my little garden.   I thought it was about time I put up a picture of my little baby.  It finally got warm the past couple weeks and everything has just taken off.  I can't wait to eat my first veggies.

Who would have thought..............

It isn't an every day occurrence that you get to see the last member of the Ramones in concert.  Marky Ramon (the drummer) is touring Spain and happened to play in a small little village about an hour from where we live last Saturday.  He had a couple of young Ramonites playing  with him.  You really aren't ever sure what a show like this is going to be like, but this one was a blast.  Sorry the video sounds is a tad shabby, the live music  rocked our bones.

Well to say the least we had a great time!  They played all the good oldies for about 2 hours.  That means that since each song lasts about 2 minutes  at a total of 100 minutes (Marky took a little pee break in the middle), well we heard about 200 Ramones songs.   The best part is I knew how all of them started with the guitarist screaming  "1, 2, 3, 4"  -----la la llllaaaaa-------  Great times!!!!!!  I wish every weekend could hold these kinds of surprises.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

So it hasn´t been doing much here but rain, thus no photos of life here in Spain or my poor little veggie garden. I have however, had quite a few free moments to think and come up with some random thoughts. Please feel free to comment on them.

1. We should work for two years and have one year vacation, and then go back all over again to work 2 years That way we could experience free time during our entire life and not just after 65 and have enough time to visit people who just happen to live really far away. We would also go back to work revived. Think of all the time you could spend with your family, kids, etc.

2. If you have ants getting into your honey put the honey jar in a container or on a plate with a little water around it making a type of mote. Ants can´t swim. (I tried putting honey in the fridge but it gets to cold to spread on toast,)

3. Does "open sesame" really mean "open says-a-me" or is that just in my head??????

4. and how about "Does eat oats and goats eat oats and little lambs eat ivy, a kid´ll eat ivy too, wouldn´t you" ? How old were you when you realized that it really did make sense and just wasn´t a bunch of sounds all coming out of your mouth.

5. More to come....

the ruins at the Acropolis. I am amazed that there wasn´t a single person
in any of my pictures. There was a crazy amount of kids there on school trips, and bunch of elderly folks on group trips and then...... little old Rosa and me two people not young enough to be at school and not old enough to where pastel colors.
