i. want. to. scream.
i've just discovered a paper.
and the findings of that paper (and other similar ones) force me to reorganise the intro and discussion of my project report.
in no minor fashion.
after i spent the past week crafting out the perfect intro.
ARGHH
the question is why.
WHY on earth didn't anyone in the lab see this paper!
its a 2004 paper!
thats old.
and the lab ppl keep talking about how the transport is 'unknown'
it is blardy known.
by the people who wrote that paper.
(*&^%
and now me.
maybe there is sth fundamentally wrong with that paper.
thats why no one talks about it.
but cannot be leh.
i've read it and its really good.

2 flies
the enormity of it all has just struck me.
how good my technique and project is, the conclusions that i can draw and all that i've worked for in the lab since october, hinge on the final results that can be drawn from the final flies.
the flies that have taken over 3 months to breed over more than 6 generations.
and i've only got 2 of them... and maybe, just maybe 1 more to come. according to my supervisor there is a 33.33% chance of getting another desired fly from the 5 un-eclosed pupae... which is one fly.. oh and it has to be female, reducing chances to 16% :(
cos its so darn difficult to get the flies with 5 desired genes all in the right place.
i'm praying that
a) they don't die
b) they yield desired results.
cos they are the control flies.
if the control doesn't work, everything is trash.
wait and see.

white easter
last year there was an amazing snow day in spring.
this year there was one too!
unfortunately it wasn't that cold so the snow melted pretty quickly.
we went around taking photos after Easter service.

my grandparents are in england!
to visit my aunt's family.
and me :)
i went down to london to meet them.
we went to planet hollywood for dinner.
exciting!
planet hollywood london is a very happening place. loud music, colourful exhibits, bubbly waitresses and ultra-long queues.
and good food.
enjoyable experience :)
then we went to watch the musical We Will Rock You.
featuring songs by Queen.
very loud music and very bright lights.
unfortunately i only recognised 3 songs- i'm sure it would have been a lot more fun if i knew more!
discovered that they sang "don't stop me now"- the ultimate brit Cheese song :)
i did enjoy the musical a lot though.
i love watching musicals!
with Phantom, Woman in White, Wicked and Chicago as my favs. can't choose a single one :( but if i were to watch one again i'll watch Phantom :)

stayed the night at my aunt's place (grandma's command)
the next day we had dim sum for lunch :) :)
then we went to a lovely cafe called Maids of Honour in london for cream tea.
long queue.
when we drove to the place it was cloudy.
when we got out of the car it started snowing.
when we finally got seats in the cafe the sun was shining brightly.
crazy weather.

chocolates. the purple one is called violet cream. sounds like sth out of a storybook somehow.
scones and clotted cream and jam :)

Lab Outing
to london for an exhibition of paintings from Russia.
and a time of lab bonding.
when we arrived in london, the head of the lab said 'if any of you gets lost, meet at the gallery'
my supervisor was like 'lets get lost (and go shopping)'
but of course we didn't.
we went for the exhibition.
which was really good!
lots of nice paintings.

then we went for lunch at an italian restuarant.
beef
mashed potatoes. in a posh glass plate.
tiramisu! too pretty to eat. but i did. it was goood.
then we had time to rush to topshop to shop for 40 mins, before heading back to camb.
attended a debate on the resurrection, before heading back to the lab to continue my Western blot. at 9 pm. sadded.

valencia
8-9 March 08
i jokingly told xiaoen one day 'i feel like going to spain for dinner'.
sometime later she sent me a msg 'hey do u really want to go to spain for dinner'
so we concluded that we did.
but that flying there for dinner would be too extravagant.
so we flew to spain for lunch dinner lunch dinner :)
a lovely tai tai weekend with my best friend- eating, shopping, taking photos and catching up :)
8 March 08
we took an early morning flight and arrived in valencia in time for lunch :)
plaza in front of the cathedral

there were people of all ages, mainly women, dressed up in traditional costume. part of the Las Fallas celebrations.

we chilled out by the plaza and tried the famous local drink- Horchata, made of pressed tiger nuts. tasted like soya bean milk with a twist haha.

then we had lunch. 3 courses!

the paella was the starter. we were quite full after that. but still managed to consume the main course (fish) and dessert. whoa.
then we walked around to look at their old buildings, before concluding that we would rather shop.
and so we did.
:)
and although we decided after lunch that we were stuffed and could not eat anymore, we were hungry again by 8 pm.
so we went to a bar for tapas!

it was abt 18 degC in the day... so at night it was chillier. but we sat outside anyway. cos it was warmer than the uk. :)
9 march 08
we woke up bright and early to hunt for breakfast.
passed by some graffitti.
had some deep fried (very oily) doughnut-like things that came with molten ultra-thick hot chocolate for dipping. nice, but probably fulfilled my calorie requirement for the day in that one meal.
effects of erosion.
visited the cathedral, where we sat down for the Catholic Mass for a while. in spanish. understood enough to know that they were having Holy Communion. quite an educational experience- never sat through Mass for so long before. very different from what i'm used to, and a lot more ritualised.
then we went to La Playa! (the beach)

but not before stopping for some yummy pastry.
when we arrived at the beach, the sun, sand and sea just made us so happy :)
proper holiday mood.
and we embarked on our major photo-whoring session of the holiday- taking jumping shots.
took about 40 successful photos in all :)

then we splashed about in the cold cold sea...

before sitting down to chill.

and look at super cute children. :)

we chanced upon a group of capoeira dancers by the beach. still don't understand how the dance works, but it was entertaining enough :)

and then. we had Paella, tortilla and sangria in a restaurant by the beach.
then we went back to the city centre, walked around, got a paella take-away to eat at the airport, and flew back to the uk.
and on monday, i went back to school for lecture.
truly a weekend get-away.
ate so much paella! (actually ate so much in general)
but a major point of the trip was to go eat paella in its hometown. and we did! a lot.
so that was good.

breakin'
been performing with the breakdancers lately.
cos they've got invites to all sorts of events.
and since all-guys = boring, some of the girls from the funk piece in Perspectives were roped in to perform tgt.
was fun!
Indian Society Ballfirst gig was at the Indian Soc Ball.
very classy event, immaculately run, a lot of attention paid to detail and decor.
lots of elaborate glittery saris that night- a true feast for the eyes.

on stage
pigging out on indian food backstage
group photo minus anthony

with rok! one of those annoyingly all-rounded people. pres of the breakdance crew so an awesome breaker, has piercing blue eyes and is almost completing a phd in computer science. what.
Mastana 08
'east anglia's largest asian cultural show'
ie 'east anglia's largest indian cultural show'
why is it that in england asian=indian? what about the rest?!
the crew!
the boys
the girls plus K. hilarious guy and awesome popper. the crowd loved him.
posers. dancers love posing somehow. at least those i've met here do.
went to La Raza then Revolution then Soultree for the after party.
there was some space by the tables in Revolution then they were playing good music so we started dancing.
that was fun.
maybe cos we were all hyped up after the show.
and there weren't that many annoying drunk brits around to bump into us while we danced.
so i enjoyed it!
attempted new moves. no idea how that worked out.
was quite tired at abt midnight, when they announced that the DJ had arrived at Soultree.
so we headed to Soultree.
floor was packed, but the surrounding area wasn't.
the ppl i was with insisted on squeezing onto the floor.
didn't have much space to dance so i wasn't that happy.
then we drifted to the side of the dance floor where there was more space and that was fun.
and the drummers came on so there were live drums. accompanying the music.
that was fun to dance to! but then the floor was packed again haiz. so it was limiting.
where am i now.
i think i'm getting a feel of what i'm aiming to achieve.
but i don't really know how to go about doing it now that funk classes have really stopped.
we shall see.

the strangest thing happened today.
a few of us from the funk item in Perspectives joined up with some guys from the breakdance crew to do a short demo at the queens bop.
but thats not the strange part.
the strange part was the fact that
i could not dance.
and i have no idea why.
since the queens bop is the equivalent of a regular club, my old rule of
80% company + 20% music
to make a good night out should apply.
it was a hiphop/rnb night so the music was supposed to be good.
but ohmygoodness the dj was terrible.
plus he was apparently a guest dj from dunno where.
didn't like his choice of songs, but since it was rnb most of the time i would say that it scored 10%.
the company was good, cos i was with a bunch of street dancers who are more than willing to get down. so company would be 80%.
thats a score of 90%.
which is really good! so i thought i would have a good night out.
but i didn't.
i did my bit for the demo, but i wasn't v pleased with the way i danced.
that applied to the entire night.
maybe it was cos the stupid drunk brits kept barging into our circle when we were dancing. if only they could see how retarded they looked. it was incredibly annoying.
maybe cos my heart wasn't in it.
maybe cos i didn't feel confident.
maybe cos they made us wait for almost 45 mins before we went into the bop proper.
that sort of killed the momentum. we were at the bar gearing up to dance. but some of the guys were late so we waited. and waited summore to enter the bop. by the time we danced proper i wasn't in the mood.
maybe it was cos i was really tired.
on a different note, the imogen heap song:
where are we.what the hell is going on.no idea.
