a night out
as part of the tradition Aunty Lilian started, we went for dinner and a movie lasst night.
the dinner was good- fish and co. :) like at last. the last time i ate there was a year ago when AL came and brought us out. to the very same restaurant at that. i keep trying to convince the class/cca/biomed ppl to hold dinner functions at fish and co but to no avail. they have to choose other places like marche, swensens, cafe cartel.. blah blah.. where the prices are comparable to those at fish and co. i have nothing against those 3 eateries, of course, only that i'm supremely sick of marche (most of the family gatherings are there) and swensens (with frens when we're not at marche). admittedly, cafe cartel was a nice change. but the food at swensens and cafe cartel are abt the same. pasta, steak (fish, chicken, beef) or salad. nice at first, but boring after a while.
but fish and co. is different. for one the stingray rox. and i like the seafood platter. crunchy crust and creamy tar tar dressing for the fillet. calamari barbequed to just the right degree- slightly smoky taste but not burnt, bathed in a buttery sauce. and the prawns...good enough on their own. pity there wasn't tabasco sauce :p i love prawns with tabasco. don't like oysters though. too fishy.
this reminds me of an incident long long ago when we went to perth for a holiday. we went to this seafood restaurant in Frementle for dinner. the food was, of course superb.. there was lobster or crayfish of some sort i think. too bad i can't remember more details :s.. old liao.
Collateral
watched Collateral yesterday. exciting thriller :) 2 hours plus. the problem was that i needed to go to the toilet 30 mins into the movie. argh. i decided to ren3. but then i decided not to test the limits of the tight juntions between the cells in the transitional epithelium of the bladder. so i risked falling flat on my face in a pitch black cinema and ventured down the steps and out of the theatre. i couldn't see a thing as i walked down the steps, and my slippers made a lot of noise in the silent darkness. almost fell once cos i couldn't see where the steps started/ended. so scary. but i made it to the toilet and back safely :) moral of the story: don't drink water before going for a movie. like don't drink for 2 hours before the movie. so that the body will think there is a water shortage and activate the RAAS mechanism and the ADH and all to conserve water. so that the sphincter muscles of the bladder would not want to relax and i would not need to miss parts of the movie. yay.
SO2
chem prac- the stoopid rate-determining experiment again. where suphur obscures a marking on the paper under a beaker. the thing is that SO2 is evolved in the process, and we have to look at the marking on the paper through the mouth of the beaker... which means that the nose is nicely positioned to inhale the wonderfully pungent gas evolved. like wattheheck. therefore a solution would be to quench the rxn asap by pouring the mixture down the sink and adding lots and lots of water to the beaker. and the sink. especially the sink, where there is a larger surface area for the gas to diffuse upwards.. and enter the nose.. and stimulate the olfactory nerves.. which pass through holes in the cribiform plate to enter the brain.. then i dunno liao :) probably activate some higher sensory portion of the brain that recognises the pungent smell... which send impulses to the leg to cause the muscles to contract.. causing me to run out of the lab to breathe.
but a good thing abt this prac is that it is super easy... did it in sec sch so we all completed it in a little more than a period and could go home. yay! :)
panic.. and indignance
i've just discovered that the cambridge application is due at the end of the month
wat the heck... i've done... nothing.
and then i'll have to get teachers' recommendations and i've been pissing off all teachers this week.
for some reason the bio dept doesn't like me. haiz. picking on my hair colour, collar pin, skirt length, folded sleeves, safety-pin-held-up shirt, sock colour, earrings, shoelace colour.
my goodness
as if i'm some rebel. puh-lease. pple wax lyrical abt how nerdy and unexposed i am and then the bio dept picks on me like nobody's business. wats their prob. if its cos my bio grades aren't good enough then its justified. but over such superficial matters... argh.
its national day!
so its time to be patriotic.
i read mr lim's blog the other day. and since there was a link, i downloaded the new Home MTV to watch as well.. to see the accuracy of his critcisms.
although i
do agree that the costumes are a vain attempt at a short-cut to representing s'pore's diverse ethnic culture, wat really disturbs me is the lack of colour in the mtv. perhaps its the attempt at artistry? of the producers figured that adding colour would be too troublesome? spore takes pride in celebrating her rich ethnic culture, and what better way of representing this culture in the video, which, btw, is supposed to stir up patriotic emotions, than by injecting vibrance via the use of colour? then perhaps the video won't be so drab. and we can
possibly tell that it's shot in spore, not some remote corner of the world that has no sunlight, no colour, no adults and no culture.
yay the week has ended :)
short short week :)
i don't like math... can't seem to do it well :(
my academic abilities in general seem to be sliding.. and prelims are just around the corner!! *sob* *shudder*

biomed was enjoyable, albiet tiring... very tiring and stressful. i learnt a lot... and it was a good experience.. i really thank God for leading me through it all.
