Thoroughly Amused

A couple weeks ago we went to Lakeside Amusement Park. It is one of the oldest family-owned parks still operating in America. They say it’s “operating” but this place was pretty ghetto. All the rides were rickety and a lot of the big rides don’t run anymore. We walked by a ferris wheel that was all rusting away and missing parts (like the seats!). Matt and I agreed it was the most depressing amusement park ever.

To add to the depression, Lily was so sad when she couldn’t go with her cousins on any of the rides. She would get all excited when the other girls would walk through the gate and toddle along after them. Only to be swept up and taken out crying. It was heartbreaking.

I love Tessa’s face in this one – having the time of her life!

July 08, 2011_5919July 08, 2011_5923

We found this coin-operated car and she had a blast!

July 08, 2011_5908

As we were watching the other girls ride, I noticed a little girl on this horse ride that looked like she was younger than Lily. We decided to ask the operator if there was a height limit on the ride and he said, no. You can bet we put Lily on the next ride! It was so fun as a parent to watch her face light up! It definitely made my day to see her so happy.July 08, 2011_5938

She definitely took after her Momma and LOVES the rides. It makes me excited when we take our kids to Disneyland someday. Hopefully she’ll still love the thrill and I can have someone go with me on the big rides!

Taking a little cotton candy break. Sophie LOVES cotton candy and kept asking for more. Tessa didn’t want anything to do with it and stuck to her “bubbly drink”. It started to rain pretty heavily so we waited it out for a while.

July 08, 2011_6006July 08, 2011_6002

As soon as the rain let up they were right back on the rides!

July 08, 2011_6017

Woo Hoo!!

July 08, 2011_6033July 08, 2011_6048

Sophie was the only one tall enough to go on the “frog hopper” Looks like she had a great time!

July 08, 2011_6068

Sophie also went on the roller coaster and loved it. Tessa mustered up the courage to go with her the next time. The first time they went around she wasn’t quite sure what she was getting into. The second time around she was all tears and screaming. They stopped the ride so she could get off and the rest of the kids could finish the ride. Poor girl.

July 08, 2011_6070

She decided the horsey ride was much more her speed and Lily was more than happy to go with her again.

July 08, 2011_6090July 08, 2011_6095

The day ended with a double rainbow. Icing on the cake.

Independence Day

After we said our goodbyes to our visitors, we went home for a bit and then got on our bikes and headed to a park a few blocks from our house that was hosting a neighborhood party. Little Man Ice Cream was a huge sponsor and provided this awesome bouncy house in the shape of their shop.

July 04, 2011_5670

We found out they had a bike parade for all the kids where they could decorate their bikes and ride a few blocks. We were bummed that we missed out on this awesome opportunity to make our awesome bikes even cooler!

July 04, 2011_5671

When we got there, they were playing tons of games – like three legged races and water balloon tossing, which turned into a big water fight.

Little Man also provided a 60 foot ice cream sundae. This thing was so long!

July 04, 2011_5674July 04, 2011_5675

Everyone is ready with their spoons, anxiously waiting for permission to dig in.

July 04, 2011_5682

While all the germophobes (us, included) stood back and let the crazies have their ice cream.

July 04, 2011_5702

After naps, we had dinner at McDonald’s. This was Lily’s first time going through the play area. She was having so much fun!

July 04, 2011_5714

She’s getting to such a fun age where she’s able to do so much. Matt went through the play area with her. By the end, his knees were aching and realizing he not quite as small and limber as he used to be.

July 04, 2011_5706 July 04, 2011_5719 July 04, 2011_5725

We met up with Dan and Jessica in Arvada for fireworks. Tessa was pleased as punch with her snow cone.

July 04, 2011_5729

Lily adores her cousins. It’s so sweet to watch her interact with them.

July 04, 2011_5730

Burning some energy before the fireworks show. This little “neighbor” boy was so cute and giggled every time they circled around him.

July 04, 2011_5732

Love him…

July 04, 2011_5733

The girls loved going up and down this hill. Tessa was so cautious and used tiny steps to go down the hill.

July 04, 2011_5735

Lily wasn’t too sure of herself and scooted on her bum. By the end of the night though, she was practically running (not always by choice) down the hill. Yes, she fell MANY times. But she always picked herself back up and tried again.

July 04, 2011_5738

Little monkey Tessa climbing the fence.

July 04, 2011_5741

This picture is horribly out of focus but I still like it.

July 04, 2011_5746

The fireworks were great. Always a crowd pleaser.

July 04, 2011_5751

After about 10 minutes Lily was ready to go so Matt put her in the stroller and gave her some shoes. They might be a bit big!

A great ending to a great day!

Jaycee’s 12 months old!

As is tradition, we took some pictures of Jaycee while they were in town. It took us two different days, but I think we got some keepers!

Happy Birthday Jaycee Girl!!

Holiday Weekend with the Fam

We LOVE it when family comes to visit! Matt’s parents, Jason, Candice, and Jaycee made the 8 hour trek to spend the 4th of July weekend with us. They arrived late Thursday night, so Friday was when all the exciting stuff happened.

Friday morning, Jason had an appointment with Matt to get his teeth looked at (no cavities, yay!) That left Candice and I, and the girls, hanging out at the house until Jason was done.

Lily loved having her buddy, Jaycee to play with the whole weekend. She was so good at sharing her toys with Jaycee!

July 01, 2011_5569

For Lunch, Jessica, Tom and Nina, and the girls met us at Arby’s and then we came back to our house to play outside.

July 01, 2011_5572July 01, 2011_5575

That night we had a hard time deciding what we were going to do for dinner since some of the group had to pick up rental bikes before the bike shop closed. We opted for Pasquini’s Pizza (no pictures, just yummy food and great conversations) One memorable thing that happened- Lily didn’t want to sit in her highchair and decided it would be more fun to squeeze herself behind everyone on the bench and walk back and forth. Poor Matt and Dan had to eat with their chests against the table. If they tried to sit back, Lily would shove herself behind them. She was quite persistent!

Saturday Morning, we packed up all the bikes and rode into the city to the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market.July 02, 2011_5620

Jaycee got to ride with me! Isn’t she so adorable?! And so helpful with the bell!

July 02, 2011_5609

July 02, 2011_5578

LOVE this picture of their family of three! And Lily’s trying to stay hydrated.

July 02, 2011_5583July 02, 2011_5584

The farmer’s market was so fun, but so hot! Our original plan was to have a snack at the farmer’s market and then bike the rest of the way to Dan and Jessica’s house (another 6+ miles) but it was quickly heating up and none of us was really looking forward to biking all that way. So we decided to take our time at the market and then head over to the art festival going on that weekend too.

There’s always such yummy food at the market. Here’s Nina’s pupusa. She had to try it since it’s a El Salvadorean original (where Dan served his mission). Matt and I had a yummy quesadilla but we were too busy devouring it to get a picture!

Bathroom break in Bed, Bath and Beyond – Jaycee for Sale!!

July 02, 2011_5588

Cherry Creek Arts Festival

July 02, 2011_5589

The kids played musical chairs with the stroller. Lily had the prime spot for seeing everything.

July 02, 2011_5592

There was some really neat artwork from artists from all across the country. I’m amazed at the talent of these people.

July 02, 2011_5593

Getting rehydrated.

July 02, 2011_5596

Waiting anxiously for their turn to get some strawberry lemonade. Jason’s such a good uncle to share with his nieces.

July 02, 2011_5597July 02, 2011_5598July 02, 2011_5599

Tessa is such a little monkey! She kept swinging from the handlebar of the stroller. She tried it later when there weren’t as many kids and almost tipped it over!

July 02, 2011_5604

After everyone had had enough of the heat and looking at the art we got back on the bikes and headed back to our house. This time Nina and Lily drove with Jessica so Dan and Sophie could ride back with us. We were all so sweaty and gross when we got to the house!

All the art inspired Matt to work on his face painting skills. Sophie was happy to oblige and became a beautiful cat.

July 02, 2011_5612

Lily got a blue butterfly on her hand (which she quickly smeared on her face before it dried).

July 02, 2011_5613

No face painting for Tessa, but she happily accepted some red toe nails. Great job Matt! We’ll have to on your nail painting skills!

July 02, 2011_5616

That night the boys and girls split up – the boys went to see the new Transformers’ movie and the girls went to the outlet mall so Grandma could get the girls some new outfits. Thanks again Nina, we LOVE Lily’s new clothes! The girls had dinner at Which Wich (so yummy!). It was bed time and Lily was having a hard time. I got her some chocolate milk thinking that would help but forgot to pack a sippy cup and she couldn’t drink out of the straw. Luckily, Jessica let me borrow her water bottle which helped but wouldn’t stay open. So I ended up holding Lily like an infant and squeezing the water bottle so the milk would go into her mouth faster. The things we do so our kids won’t scream in public!

Matt said he wasn’t too impressed with the movie. Not sure if that was because he had to pee for most of the movie because of his huge drink or the fact that he had chili-cheese fries for dinner and wasn’t feeling too great.

Sunday we went to Church and everyone had dinner at our house. The girls all looked so adorable in their new dresses! Lily and Jaycee got matching dresses from Gymboree. They were so cute!

July 03, 2011_5622

The guys got some playing time in while the steaks were grilling.

July 03, 2011_5623

Matt got the girls popsicles for dessert! He wins over their hearts with sugar. It seems to be working.

July 03, 2011_5627July 03, 2011_5624July 03, 2011_5625July 03, 2011_5628

Enjoying the beautiful summer evening.

July 03, 2011_5629

The girls really love their Papa!

July 03, 2011_5636July 03, 2011_5632

These two were having a great time in the sandbox. I thought they were playing so good together, then I went over to check on them and they had been putting sand all over the grass and the sprinkler! After multiple warnings, we had to close it up/ They just couldn’t keep it in the box.

July 03, 2011_5637

That didn’t stop Lily from still “playing” in the sandbox though!

July 03, 2011_5639

Matt got a fire going and we wanted to roast some ‘mallows but the only ones we had were the teeny-tiny ones. Candice was determined to get a good ‘mallow.

July 03, 2011_5643July 03, 2011_5644

Swapping stories and wisdom ‘round the fire.

July 03, 2011_5648

Lily loves following the big girls around.

July 03, 2011_5652

The little girls love Matt…

July 03, 2011_5667

…especially when he’s handing out marshmallows on a stick!

July 03, 2011_5666

Cute Jaycee hanging out with her Daddy. Matt did some wheel-barrow racing around on the grass. Tessa was the only one with enough arm muscles to keep her body up. The other girls just flopped over as soon as he lifted them up.

July 03, 2011_5653July 03, 2011_5659July 03, 2011_5660

Monday morning we went to breakfast at Subway. We tried to go to some local cafés but everything was either closed or had a 20+ minute wait. So we chose what was good and quick. Then our visitors were back on their way to Salt Lake. We loved having them here and can’t wait to have more visitors come (hint, hint!)
