Halloween

Another fun Halloween in the books!  Kids sure make this holiday more fun.  Halloween has never been my favorite but seeing how much my kids love it makes it better.

This year we had the Queen of Hearts, Hermione, Little Red Riding Hood, Charlie Brown, and Jack Skellington (Tyson has said for months he wanted to be Spiderman, which was awesome since we already had the costume.  Then at the beginning of October he changed his mind, which required a lengthy costume process.  But I'm happy with how it turned out!).

It was so fun to go to the school parade.  I love seeing my kids personalities as they walk through the crowded room.

Saturday night we had our traditional cheesy potato soup in bread bowls before we headed out for trick-or-treating.

I took the younger 3 kids through a good chunk of the neighborhood until Cooper's little bag was full.  Then I came home and handed out candy with Cooper and Alex took Brynne and Tyson back out.  Cooper definitely got into handing out candy.  Every time the doorbell rang he ran to the door and deliberately picked out a treat for each kid on the porch.  I'll take his help any time!

Picture Day!

I don't like paying for school pictures, so I just snap a few before the kids leave.  Unfortunately we ended up with some funky shadows on these, but you get the idea.

Fall Fun!

We kicked off blessed Fall Break with our annual Gardner Village for the witch scavenger hunt.  We brought the Gardner's along this time, though I didn't manage to get any pictures of all the kids together.

As we've done for the last few years, Cindy and I took our kids up to meet Aunt Carla at a fun pumpkin patch in West Jordan.
Cooper picked out at least a dozen pumpkins and kept putting them in the wheelbarrow.  We had to sneak them out when he wasn't looking.

Maybe just a tad too heavy for Tyson.

Alli had very specific requirements for her pumpkin and she wasn't going to come home without the perfect one.

Happy Fall!

Sunday 10: Cooperisms

I have a million pictures to post from October and Halloween festivities, but I keep seeing funny things Cooper says or does and I can't handle the thought of him getting older and outgrowing some of his silly quirks.

1.  The question "how old are you?" will produce one of two answers from Cooper.  Either he'll say "two" and hold up his index finger and his pinky (because, I've learned, he lacks the coordination or fine motor skills to hold up his index and middle fingers together) or he'll tell you he's 4.  At this point I'm pretty sure he's convinced himself he is actually 4, since he gives that answer more than the other one these days.

2.  Soon after his recovery from surgery was over, we got bunk beds and moved Tyson into Cooper's room in preparation for the new baby.  The transition actually went more smoothly than I anticipated, though we have hit a couple snags.  One of those snags is that Tyson always went to bed with quiet music, and Cooper always had white noise.  Cooper decided he's too big for white noise now, so he and Tyson decide together what to listen to every night.  One night I went in to get them in bed and asked what they wanted.  Cooper kept saying "rocket" and I had no idea what that meant.  Finally Tyson told me Cooper was talking about rock n' roll.  Tyson apparently taught him about it.  Cooper went to bed that night mad at me that I wouldn't turn on rock n' roll.

3.  One of our favorite Brighton basketball players had an accident a few months ago and ended up with some injuries that required a crazy contraption on his leg.  Cooper came up to me a few days after we had visited Trevor with this train tunnel on his leg and announced to me that he was "Trebor".

4.  Cooper helped me put together these stools for the boys lego table.  Tyson finally decided Cooper is old enough to join in the lego fun.  Cooper and I built a little house the other day and Cooper instructed me on where everything should go.  He's a very deliberate child and I love him for it.

5.  He talks all the time.  Non-stop.  He speaks in slurred English run-on sentences which we've mostly learned to interpret.  We were reading 3 Nephi 3 the other night and Alex was explaining to the kids how the good guys were in the middle and the bad guys were in the mountains.  Suddenly Cooper gave a 5 minute monologue about the bad guys in the mountains building gas stations and fire stations and the good guys had a wall and that's a wall, and that's a wall, and that's a wall and that's a door and that's a fridge, and that's a wall and something about toes and Wreck-It Ralph and the bad guys built a gas station in the mountains...  He just talked and talked and didn't want to stop.  He had us all rolling with laughter.  And he's pretty much just like that.  He talks a lot and makes us laugh and also frustrates us because he's so darn stubborn, but secretly we all love him for it.

6.  Over the last several weeks he's become extremely interested in learning his ABC's.  It all started when I had a Crock-Pot box sitting on the counter and he started pointing at the O's and saying it.  So I taught him the rest of those letters.  He was really excited that there was a C on it that matched the C on his shoe bucket in the mud room.  From there he learned the rest of the first initials on the shoe buckets and he just went wild from there.  He now knows all but maybe 4 or 5 of his upper-case letters.  Any time he sees a letter that matches a shoe bucket he gets really excited and runs to the mud room.  "I see a H for Holly!"  I bought him a little foam ABC puzzle a couple weeks ago and I think that was the best dollar I've ever spent.  He loves playing with those letters.

7.  Cooper got to go to his very first BYU football game with Alex a few weeks ago and I've rarely seen him so excited.  That boy was talking about it all morning and felt like one of the big kids.  Now whenever he wears his BYU shirt he talks about going to the "BYU bupball game".

8.  He loves shooting hoops in our basement.  And I have to say that he's a pretty good shot for a 2 year old!  He spends lots of time shooting, and sometimes he'll even share with Tyson.  "Shoot a backetball!"

9.  We spent a lot of time during his surgery recovery cuddling on the couch.  Now he's back to his old self, but he still brings me a blanket at least a couple times a day and asks to cuddle on the couch.  It makes me so happy.  I will take the cuddles as long as he'll give them!

10.  If Alex is eating or drinking something, Cooper stakes his claim.  When Alex says no, Cooper will say "no, it's Coooooper's water" and drink it anyway.  Alex always gives in.  It's cute.  :)

As much as I try to make him stay my baby, he won't stop getting older.  He feels like one of the big kids and he's starting to act more like one these days.  I sure love this little buddy.

Sunday 10

1.  I couldn't bring myself to do a Sunday 10 last week because my stomach was in knots as we prepared for Cooper's surgery Monday morning.  His breathing and snoring had gotten worse over the last couple weeks so we were more than ready to get the tonsils out, but I was still so nervous sending my baby into surgery.
2.  Cooper had been sick Friday night and Saturday and I'm pretty sure he ended up with tonsillitis or another virus that made his tonsils extra swollen.  This picture is from Sunday morning.
 3.  Cooper and I left bright and early Monday morning for the hospital.  He was really happy until they made him change into the hospital clothes.  I think at that point he started realizing this was more than just a doctor appointment.  Once he got settled with his blanket and we found a cartoon to watch, he cheered up a tad.

4.  Alex got the kids off to school and met me at the hospital just in time to see Cooper come out of surgery.  The doctor said he did great, and that his tonsils were huge and adult-sized, and that his adenoids (which I didn't realize were also getting removed until just before surgery) were blocking 90% of his airway.  No wonder he was such a loud breather!  Cooper was not a happy camper coming out of anesthesia.  I rode with him to his room because he just wanted me to hold him.

5.  He spent the rest of the day with extreme highs and lows, crying one minute, laughing the next.  But he was such a tough kid and I was so proud of him.  He had to stay in the hospital for 24 hours since he's under 3.  I slept in the bed with him since he was pretty restless while he was sleeping.  Alex and the kids and Grandma and Grandpa visited and he loved playing in the toy room with them.

He ate jello for the first time and was so giddy about it.

6.  We came home Tuesday morning and even though we were gone less than 30 hours I was incredibly happy to be home again. The whole procedure had given me so much anxiety leading up to it, and I was thrilled to be back home with my on-the-mend little buddy.  Recovery has been overall better than I expected but it's definitely had some hard times.  He is in the worst of it right now as the scabs are falling off, but even with that he's still happy a good portion of the day.  He hasn't been sleeping well at night but I'm not sure if that's due to his mouth hurting or the new freedom of sleeping in a toddler bed.  Hopefully that goes back to normal soon - Alex and I are starting to feel loopy!

He was too stubborn for a nap, but he couldn't quite make it to bedtime.  :)

7.  The whole post can't be about Cooper, right?  We spent the afternoon Friday at the Jensen's house while Alli used their cute 50's style basement kitchen as the setting for her video for school.  Trevor gave Tyson a new little Lego set which he came home and put together in about 10 minutes.

8.  We got a couple new ottoman/chairs for the family room and Cooper wasn't happy about sharing one with Tyson.

9.  Holly and Brynne went to the BYU football game with Alex Friday night.  It was a late game, so they didn't get home until really late.  Between that and soccer games on Saturday the kids were worn out.  Holly fell asleep watching conference.

10.  We've enjoyed a nice conference weekend.  It's fun seeing the older kids wanting to watch all of the talks and even taking notes.  We were able to spend a little time with neighbors in between sessions eating an amazing brunch, and lots of time with just our family at home.  Conference is always a great chance to take a breather and enjoy some down time at home.
