Eirik's first winter

So January and February have been two of the coldest months I can ever remember living through! Our heating bill was the highest it has ever been and it seems like we haven't been outside for ages! Luckily, on a happy note, this week we had two days actually warm enough to go on walks. We practically lived outside those two days. Eirik got to play in the mud/ grass and pick up dead leaves and get messy. He loved it, and so did I. I guess it's needless to say that we have major spring fever! Winter is a super drag and it is my dream to someday live far enough away from it that I forget how miserable it is.
On another positive note, since we are inside all the time, Eirik and I are reading tons of books. He has these pop up books that he loves! This morning we flipped through them for almost an hour. He's learning so fast!!!

He can make the sounds of:
growl: dinosaur, bear, tiger, lion, crocodile, shark
neigh: horse, sea horse, sheep, goat, lamb
moo: cow
high pitched chirp-like sound: rooster
wooa woo: train
brbrbr: truck, car, airplane, helicopter

He can make the baby signs of a fish, airplane and pattycake
He dances and sings on demand

He can say hot, hat, mama, dada, bat, doggy, hi- oh and this is the cutest. He says hi like a sweeping drawn out low, high, low hiIIIiiiiiii. I wish you could hear it. Paul and I just laugh and laugh.

He has been walking with his little walker but up until today he would go straight forward until he was stuck in a corner and then he would cry for help. Today he learned to push the walker sideways so that he has a lot of control on turning and he can go anywhere he wants by himself for the first time. I wish you could have seen how proud he was!

He has completely refused to eat anything unless he has his own spoon and honestly, he's pretty adept at eating with his own spoon. He will soon not need me to feed him at all. He figured out that his favorite way to drink is to sip through a straw.

I'm going to have to take some video of his tricks!

My Amazing Husband

So here he is, this crazy ruffian of a man that I married for all of eternity...
In 45 minutes it's Valentine's Day.
I think it's about time he got some prime bragging space on our blog.
Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to be married to this guy. I know he had his choice of a whole slew of women, and I'm the one that gets the pleasure.. so here are just 10 of the things that i love about my hubby this week:

1. I love that he never seems to tire of the never ending onslaught of tests that med school brings. I mean, I know he's so sick of studying, but he keeps getting A's. I am just amazed sometimes that he can stay up late, get up at 5:30 and study more, go take a test and come right home and start on the next one. Everyone said med school was hard. I didn't know it was going to be so hard to watch him suffer in silence. He's such a trooper. We've put a lot on the line and it's not in vain. He's up to the challenge and I am sooo proud of him!!!

2. I love that he is sooo different from me. We're a lot alike, I know, but there are those things that I just can't join him on that sometimes frustrate and annoy me like crazy, but if he gave up those things, how would he complete me? He fills in where I am not. Thank goodness we are different.

3. Paul made me my own private beach in my bathtub last week. I need to post a picture, but let it suffice to say that he really really made my month.

4. I love that Paul comes home for lunch. There are lots of things he could do if he stayed as school, but from the beginning he made the decision to spend lunch with his family, and I didn't know it in the beginning, but it has been my sanity here. He puts us first and it makes all the difference.

5. I love that Paul is CAPABLE. He always says that we are equally smart, but when it comes to getting some things done, he is amazing. Efficiency at it's best. If Paul says he is going to do something, you can be sure that he will.

6. Paul just decided last month that he was going to build a new computer. Before he decided he knew very little about computers, but he decided it was something he wanted to know about so he poured himself into it and learned everything he could. He is so resourceful. We ended up with a rocking computer. I'm impressed.

7. He listens to his lectures double speed. I can't even pick out the words and he is learning the stuff. His mind is like a big sponge. Sometimes we both hear something on the radio at the same time. Maybe I'm talking to him at the same time and later I'll overhear him tell someone about what we heard with about 60 times the detail of what I remember from the report. I guess that says something about me. But it also says something about him. He's a smarty pants.

8. For any of you out there who know Paul you aren't going to believe this, but Paul can decorate. Now, don't get any weird ideas. I'm still the one with the talent. I have to hold onto something. :) But when we get going together, sometimes his creative ideas just blow me away. It's a lot of fun. If it were an option, I'd go into business with him.

9. Paul uses his love of art as another way of loving me. He has a way of appreciating my work that fills me up all that I need. If it weren't for him, I would be a freaking validation vampire. I love him for that.

10. Paul is a man. I know it sounds dumb. I just love that with all the feminist movement that the media and the public throw into the social mix, he hasn't succumbed to the meterosexual stigma that so pervades society. I like a man who can build things, be a leader, be strong, and not prissy. I love his masculinity. I love that in this picture he is holding a stick and a rock. It looks like he is about to smash something. :) JK.. i like that he's gentle too... ok, he's sort of gentle. I guess maybe he could work a little on being gentle. JK

Love you babe..

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

More Milestones

Ok, I know Eirik is all I talk about. Well, I can't help it.
Today he was so cute.
It is like overnight the language lightbulb went on for him and all of the sudden he is comprehending so many new things. He had a couple of exciting firsts this week. He has been saying Dad for a while now. It was for sure his first word. Of course he could say mamamamama first, but he had no idea what it meant and he promptly forgot how to say it a week after he learned it. So Dad is by far his favorite word. Today we were reading books in his nursery when suddenly he looked up at me as said "Dad?" I said, "Dad's at school honey." He crawled into the front room where dad usually studies, determined that dad really wasn't here and came right back to his books! How awesome for a parent to realize that their child knows your name, your permanence in their life, and your importance, and that he trusts so completely.

Last night we were reading books- (yeah we do it nonstop) and I showed him a picture of a fish and for the 1000th time I showed him the baby sign for fish and...drumroll, guess what... he finally did it back!!! I know, it's such a small step, but for us it was like a major breakthrough. You should have seen his little face as he realized that he could tell me that he understood by simply putting his lips together in a pucker a couple of times. He was excited and kept doing it over and over as I congratulated him repeatedly. We were both so excited and this morning he went to the book, opened to the fish picture and showed it to me while he did the sign. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Now, if I could just get him to sign "more"!!

He's also been working on saying a few more words. For the past few days he has been saying things that sound like dog, duck, done, down, and I do believe he knows what he is trying to say. But today, without a doubt, he said "hot". He was in the bathtub and said "hot" to tell about the water. He even said the T at the end.

I know, I know, only a mother can be this excited about these little things, but today I could tell in Eirik that he knew a whole new world was opening up to him. He's learning as fast as his little brain can. For a minute today he was trying hard to tell Paul something. Paul finally let Eirik walk him into the living room where he say himself down in front of the computer and put his hand toward the screen and said "da". He wanted to learn something and when we put in a baby Einstein he was enthralled and learning.

I'm reading a book called "How Smart is your baby?" It gives tips on ways to accelerate your baby's milestones. It's pretty cool. Too bad I didn't read it from birth. I'll have to do all the tricks from birth with the next one.

To sum up, I think I could write all night about the cute things Eirik is doing. We spent all afternoon playing in such a way that neither of us got bored and he kept crawling over to me and giving me these big hugs with lots of laughing and slobber kisses on my neck. I looked at him at one point and just thought to myself, "How did I get so lucky that I get to be the one that hangs out with you everyday, all day long?" What a great feeling for a mom to get to have. I'm in a good place.
