Day and Night, Cold and Hot
It is weird when the sky turns dark so early in the afternoon. In Singapore, the sky only turns dark at around 7pm year round. In Montreal, during summer it turns dark at 7.30pm. In winter, 4.30pm. Considering that on days without school I will wake up at around lunch time, I only get around 4 to 5 hours of sunlight each day. Haha.
The weather is also weird too. Last week, it was between -5 to 5. This week, it is between 5 to 15. Next week, it is forcasted to fall back to a single digit. At least no snow for now which I guess it is a good thing?

Montreal Olympic Park
The school brought us to see the Olympic Park where Montreal held the 1976 Summer Olympics. In my opinion, the place looks worn down. Nothing has been done to update the place and walking around the place feels like going back to the eighties.
The highlight of the place is a cable car ride up to the observatory deck where the view was excellent, over looking the whole of Montreal city and beyond.

First Home-Cooked Dinner
Just some pictures of the first home-cooked dinner as a house. My friend did the cooking and the rest helped out.
- Corn, Tomato, Onion and Chicken Soup
- Stir-Fried Beef with Onions and Tomato
- Stir-Fried Asparagus
- Eggs with Bacon
Overall, very interesting meal as a group and eating-in is definitely much cheaper.

Mount Royal Park
When to Mount Royal Park to take a look. The locals will gather in this park during the weekend to get some sunshine. I saw some interesting things at the park. There was a group of people who were dressed up as ancient knights and were role playing some "dungeon and dragon" fight scene. The contumes were all home-made and were done pretty nicely. There were a few who had bows, arrows and shields to go along with their characters. Something you will not find in Singapore.
There were also a group of individuals who will play drums at a corner of the park Anyone can come with a drum and join in or you could just dance to the beat of the drum.
In the photo album, there is also a man sitting on top of a tree. I believe he is crazy and refused to come down when the cops arrived. The fire department had to be called in.

Buying Food!
The whole house decided to head down to chinatown to have breakfast and to stock up on essential food stuff. I had century eggs and meat porridge which was quite good. After that we went to a chinese supermarket to buy sauces (such as Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce, soya sauce, sesame and cooking oil) and instant noodles. The price were very reasonable compared to the western supermarkets around our house. A surprising find was "Singapore Hot Curry Sauce" by Yeo's. We bought a can and will try it soon. Stay tune.

Later, we headed to Jean Talon market. It is an open market that sells all the fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. The place was crowded with people doing their weekend shopping. The things are cheap like 12 corns for only $3.50 and a bunch of bananas for less than $2. It is very nice to see so many fresh food at a glance of an eye.

Orientation
Today was the first day of orientation and the school really is hosting many international students. There were like close to 200 exchange students this semester. Most of the students come from South America and Europe. We has some tour of the 2 school buildings, games and some interactions. The orientation will go on for the next few days with trips to the beach and city tour. Also, the school will be bring us the clubs every night for the next whole week. Talk about partying... I have gotten some shots of the school. More to come soon when class really starts.

On another note, i didn't provide some shots of the exterior of my apartment. Here are some. Note that my apartment is along the main room and the heavy usage of iron in the gate and stairs.

20 August
Head to downtown to take a look and had lunch.
Then, my other roommate, Liu Yue and I went strolling around the city area. Took a few pictures. Around 2pm (Singapore 2am), we both were a little tired and headed home for a nap. Had pizza for dinner from a dinner round the corner of my block. Nothing eventful.

Day One
I’m half way to my destination as I type this post. Currently, I am at Detroit Airport in US. The day started early for me. With a 0600 departure to Tokyo, my parents and I headed to the airport at around 0400. Check-in security was very tight with strict limitation to baggage weight. I had to do some last minute packing just to comply with the limitation.
NW20 SIN-NRT
My first time trying out an American carrier and my first experience onboard wasn’t a good one. As passengers were boarding the plane, the stewards and stewardesses were engaged in personal conversation and left the passengers to find their seats for themselves. After my last trip to Australia on business class, seating back in economy felt a little awkward. Overall, the flight was reasonable. The food was average but the video-on-demand personal tv helped pass the time on the ~7 hours flight. I watched KungFu Panda and Meet the Robinsons which I found to be really good animation movies.
Narita Airport
With an hour to kill before my next killer flight, I wandered around the airport. Wanted to try some food but was rather full after two meals onboard the plane. The airport felt a little run down. Being in Japan, the queues were very short and the staff very efficient and friendly. Looking at the departure board, I realized that the flight was pushed forward to 1555 instead of the planned 1615. I thinking that the early departure will give me extra time to clear customs in the US, I patiently waited for the departure.
NW12 NRT-DTW
Boarding started at 1530 and everybody was ready by the 1555 departure time. The departure time came and went and I realized that something wasn’t right. True enough, the announcement was made soon after that the plane had some mechanical faulty and we had to be transferred to another plane. We were told that the transfer would cause at least a 30 minutes delay. After settling down nicely into my seat, I had to pack up all my stuff and leave the plane and head for another gate. We waited for 30 minutes before we were allowed to board and by the time the plane took off, we were behind schedule by an hour.
The plane was a 747 and should be at least 15 years old. The seat didn’t have a personal tv screen and still had the old ash tray holder at each seat. The 11 hours flight was very monotonous with only my Ipod and book to serve as entertainment.
DTW
Arriving at the airport at 1630, I thought I could get to my connecting flight on time if I hurried. Unfortunately, the customs line was very slow. To my surprise, baggage for my flight was coming out to 2 different baggage claim belts. You had to look at 2 belts to spot your baggage. My 2 bags came out from the 2 different lines. At the transfer desk, I was informed that my flight had left and the airline had reassigned me on another flight. Instead of my initial 1720 flight, my new flight will be at 2115. I’m now sitting in a cafĂ© having a meal and wasting my time by blogging.

Southern Ridges: Henderson Waves, Alexandra Arch
A few months back, the National Parks Board announced that it is now possible to walk from Mount Faber Park to West Coast Park with the completion of 2 new bridges, Henderson Waves and Alexandra Arch. After hearing good reviews from my friends, I decided to go and check it out for myself. I had nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon and called Josephine along for this nature walk.

I parked my car at HarbourFront and headed to the start point, HarbourFront MRT Exit D.

From here, it is a couple dozens of steep steps up to Mount Faber Park where the cable car station is situated. With a clear sky and no direct sunlight, the view from the top was beautiful.

We then headed to the Henderson Waves, this bridge links Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. The bridge is really high up from the road. I have drove past the road below a couple of times and never once saw it. Being a Saturday, there were a lot of families with young children admiring this new attraction.

Moving on we walked along the treetop walk, which is just steel pathways, on to Alexandra Arch, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park and back. The sun has set on the way back and both bridges were lit up. Sadly, the colors did not change.

Overall, both bridges are worth a visit. If you want to check it out but don't want to walk too much, take a bus from HarbourFront Terminal and start from Mount Faber Park and catch a bus back at NOL Building.

Malacca: Quiet, Little Town
Zhi Chen, Weili and I decided to take advantage of the strong Sing Dollar and went on a short trip across the border to Malacca with last week. It has been ages since I last went to Malacca. We took a Five Star coach from Boon Lay, which will bring us directly to our hotel in Malacca. However, we were informed that the bus had some "problem" and we had to transfer to another bus, which came from Beach Road at Tuas Checkpoint. I really doubt that the bus really had any problems. I think it really was because that were six passengers incuding us and it would not be profitable to drive us up. Customs was smooth but ended up waiting nearly half an hour to transfer to the new bus.

Overall, it is a relaxing, slow-paced trip with shopping and eating being the highlights. I would not be returning any time soon though.

Stand Banana Stand

My friend, Weili told me that he has never since a Banana Stand before. So I want to show him a picture of my house's banana stand in action. Instead of looking for a place to hang the bunch of bananas, this stand provides an easy and presentable way of displaying the bananas. Enjoy~

On a totally seperate note, Jurong Point has recently opened a new section totally dedicated to Japanese. There are around six Japanese restuarents in that some section, including Tori-Q, Ichiban Sushi etc. It is a must-visit place for Japanese food lovers.

Random Stuff
Haven been updating recently with planning timetables and lodging for my exchange. I will be leaving on 19 Aug on a very early flight. If you are interested to know more, msg me. I will be updating my blog more frequently when I'll on exchange so stay tuned.
I just want to share a few interesting things to share with you guys today.
1. Selling ideas for things to do
Just didn't think that any sane person will create such a machine. Will you be so bored that you will be willing to part with your money to have someone do the thinking for you? Hmmm...
2. Miss Universe 2008
Most of us will not know that Miss Universe 2008 will be happening this Sunday, 13 July in Vietnam. Do you know who is representing Singapore?
Her name is Shenise Wong. I have never seen or heard about her before. I guess Singaporeans are no longer interested in the Miss Universe competition because whoever represents Singapore will not move on beyond the first round. Furthermore, this year, the channel 5 no longer airs the show live.
3. McDonald's Olympic Collectibles
McDonald has just introduced their Olympic 2008 Collectible. It is a glass cup designed with a certain sporting event. There are 5 designs to be collected and each design will be out for one week starting on Thursday. I have gotten my first cup which is the 'Archery" design featured in the adv above. I think it will be a good collectible with China organizing this Olympics games which is less than a month away.
Before I end this post, I just want to mention that the Iphone 3G is out on sale now. As I'm typing this post, the phone is on sale in America. There are already early complains with regards to the lack of unlimited data plans, the iphone must be purchased with a 2-year contract and the new apps store crashing due to the heavy traffic volume as users of the first iphone rush to explore the new apps store. I hope Singapore will get the Iphone soon but Singtel is really keeping quiet about this issue. If you are interested, you can sign up Singtel's notification list at their website to receive first hand news about the release of the Iphone.
My exchange to Canada is less than a month away. I'm both excited and sacred of living on my own in a foreign country.
Till next time.
