Christmassy (mis)deed

Gluttony.
Have met up with the VJ-library people yesterday for a christmas-eve gathering at Siam Kitchen. I think the girls ate more than the guys.
Why do guys eat so little nowadays?!
Am suddenly reminded of year 1 physiology lectures - how everyone of us are born a fixed amount of adipose cells (fat cells) in our bodies. Meaning no matter how much you binge, you won't increase the number of adipose cells in your body.
Oh. But the fat cells can
E X P A N D.Am also reminded of one of my year 2 practicals when my lecturer was palpating my quadriceps femoris (the muscle on the front of your thighs).Me: *vaguely disturbed by how much my thigh was wobbling and how my lecturer was trying to palpate some semblance of muscle amidst the layers of fat* Yah I know my thigh is very fatty.Lecturer: *ill-disguised smirk* No lah. It's just very flabby.ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

De-clutter
I have re-discovered so much good stuff while clearing all the stuff in the boxes under my bed - Letters, cards, group-journals, memos. Letter-writing was really quite the fad in my secondary school so me and my CCA mates would write to each other even though our classes were next to each other.
So fun!
Anyway I can't resist sharing this bit of super funny letter-writing from 2 of my CCA mates, nicknamed "Minime" and "Maxime" (I was Bigme and there was also a Skinnyme):
Date: sometime in '99?
Greetings Big-me,
How's thoust life? Received thou mail on Wednesday. Methinks thy wit's clever enough to think silly plot as this. Methinks thy drawing silly to the extent. Thy mature, doth you grow up. O power upon me, welcome to real life bozo. By the way, me haven't got back test of Chemistry. Methinks going to fail badly. How art thou doing?
Dost thou think me postcard cute? A postcard of wax (adopted from Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, Scene 3 line 76 describing Paris). Hmm, methinks should finis inherto before thy brain burst. Haf fun, wilt God Bless and take care.
Blessed, Minime & Maxime
Ah. The fusion of classic Shakespearean verses with modern-day worries.
And the letters have also reminded me: teenage girls can get SO jealous. About who's going around with whom, who goes to recess with whom, who doesn't wait for whom after recess, who's using whom as a sparetyre. Wow. And I was in a girls' school.
Group-journals are also super fantastic because you have one whole clique (my clique happened to have 9 people) writing in this small notebook. So when anybody is pissed off she could trash it out in the ntoebook. And the rest of us would defend ourselves (albeit defensively and angrily) with words.
Yeah. Even though I would complain about it from time to time, I miss the bitchiness of girls' school. Yes, even the petty quarrels, sulking and crying.
I don't think it will ever happen to me again.

I was clearing out my enclave of Christmas cards (is it a sin to clear christmas cards before christmas itself?) when I came across this booklet by MOH regarding scholarships for careers in the paramedical (now known as allied health) profession.
And there's a page that introduces Occupational Therapy!
Occupational therapy is the treatment and management of physical and psychological conditions through specific activities or techniques. These activities and techniques range from from daily living tasks to the use of highly complex equipment.Occupational Therapists treat those who are physically impaired to recover their lost functions if their disability is temporary. They also devise alternative ways of performing tasks if the disability is permanent. With the mentally ill, Occupational Therapists devise treatments that break down the psychosocial barriers causing their disturbed behaviours, and overcome the patient's lack of confidence as well as irrational fears, anxieties and difficulties in relationships with others. The career in occupational therapy allows you to work in a wide range of clinical environments, for example, pediatrics, elderly care, orthopaedics, psychitry and with people suffering from learning disabilities.Yah I know the introduction is rather lengthy and unengaging but I am so glad to find a definition for what OT is. Shall memorise parts of this and regurgitate when people ask me what OT is. Farewell to feelings of inadequacy and stupidity in explaining what I do!

okie..here goes...
i reckon all the girls were late except for blur blur (i mean the human not the rabbit) and mrs lin (hmm i wonder if i keep calling her that, she will beat me anot..)..cos when the late me, ade and spider were making our way there, we realized gina, debbie and eunice are all not there yet..hahaha
anyway..as usual we had a lot of food..but according to greg, this year more of the food was actually finished..probably bcos more people came (see la people..every year also must have so many people wat...ah bo greg so nice provide house still muz deal with all the leftover food in the morning)
gift exchange...eh...donoe wat to write..cos..nth much to say oso except for a certain mr creative who decided to give play-doh...hohoho...and i am astonished to find out that i was the only one who gave a photoframe ahahah
later as we were all abt to leave, mr ant finally made his grand entrance at greg's house...and i was later told he managed to finish alot of the food...good for u!! hahaha..maybe next time u can compete with wj in eating..i sincerely think wj is a pig *smiles sweetly*

yuppp the ever-fickle me decided to return once i stepped into my home..and so i decided to beg greg to come fetch me since my mum refused me outright to drive me there...hohoho and he agreed!! yay yay yay..thanks!!! and so i went to bathe and waited for them with my hamburger boardgame which mrs lin requested me to bring cos she was veri bored..(here comes the complaints: WE DID NOT PLAY THE GAME!! and i had to lug it home the other day before i went for work..so i think i am entitled to suan her abit longer =D)..
during the nite..our dear beautiful butterfly princess fell asleep pretty soon...followed by wj..the rest of us migrated downstairs to eat and ended up sitting at the dinner table in semi-darkness and talking...we talked from ard 1am (i think) to 7am...amazing how topics can juz come up when you are with a bunch of frens..it was reli fun..hahaha...i donoe abt the others but i veri long neva sit there crap and act cute...i even took a video but bcos i happen to be totally ugly in it (yupppp uglier than the normal me which is quite an achievement ahhaha) i will not show anyone...in fact it is soon to be deleted..haha..oh oh..and later dw fell asleep too..which is quite funny..cos he say he go upstairs watch soccer match but when i went up to take my handphone he was slouched in the sofa with his face facing the direction of the tv on and eyes shut..haaa

Aural Fetish
Don't mind me ranting on...
Despite the cutely cumbersome look of my Creative Zen NX Mp3 player, its lascivious habits belies its ostensible innocence. In it's relatively short lifespan of 2 years, it has seen at least 5 earphones penetrating it's 3.5mm stereo mini-jack. Yes, it is by no means a surprise that my mp3 player is rather loose.
Presenting the current Sony MDR-EX81L...
The latest mistress that has fallen out of favour.

Although minute parts of the copper wire is exposed, the earphones still work perfectly fine. But $89.00 for a lifespan of 5 months is simply too obscene for the expensive aural whore. This being my 3rd Sony Earphones that have broken down on me, is compelling evidence that I am an absolute pinnacle of folly and obstinateness. *knocks head at lustful player*
So take heed of advice when people say, "A wise man learns by the experience of others. An ordinary man learns by his own experience. A fool learns by nobody’s experience."
Many have also reminded me of the presence of $20.00 earphones. They play music all the same, don't they?
Of course, they do, but many of them lack the sound isolating features that only well-fitted in-ear earphones can provide. Without them, more often than not, one has to turn up the volume to drown out ambient noises. And that, to me doesn't sound like good news to the most sensitive organ in the body.
With good dynamic microdrive powering the earphones, one would be able to hear all the nuances in songs which would otherwise be muffered or overpowered by the unbalanced highs and lows of cheaper earphones. That said, let's not forget to encode your songs at higher bitrates than a dismal 128kbps.
My 3 Basic Criterias for Earphones1. Non Sony
2. Sound isolation so none in-ear types are out of the question.
3. High powered Neodynium Magnet
It came as a pleasant surprise to discover that Apple Stores in Singapore carry audiophile brands such as Shure, Etymotics and Ultimate Ears. Interestingly, after inspecting the string of integers (aka price), I noticed my blanched skin blended in with the surroundings as well as VJC students would camouflage with their beige architecture. The following are the prices that I observed in the whitewashed shop in Borders:
Shure Sound Isolating EarphonesE2C -
$220
E3C -
$375
E4C -
$525
Etymotic Research ER-4P MicroPro Earphones, ER-4P
$590Yes, it seems absurd to pay for earphones that rival the cost of the player. But upon further calculation and specious analysis, it might actually make some sense to invest in a pair of low end audiophilic earphones.
My Rationale:In slightly more than 2 years, my previous 3 Sony and 1 Audio-Technica Earphones have already cost me well over $200. And upon, visiting the official Shure website, I found out that I could get a 2 year world-wide parts and workmanship warranty if I purchased a pair of Shure earphones. Coupled with the possibility of securing a cheaper price through Yahoo auctions, doesn't it make monetary sense?
In a nutshell:Sony Sony MDR-EX81L: $89.00 -- 5 months
Shure E2C: $220.00 or $150.00 (Yahoo! Auctions) -- 2 Years
Of course, the gravest danger would be if I were to lose the Earphones.

Very random thoughts
Nosebleeds
You guys ever had nosebleeds before? I used to be secretly envious of people whose noses bleed at an acceptable frequency, e.g once very 2 or 3 weeks. So interesting to have red fluid streaming down your nostrils and dripping onto your worksheets. A running nose just doesn't seem to be the same.
I remember this guy in my Primary 1 class who had nosebleeds about once a month. Blood would stream down without warning and teachers would be in a flurry to stop the bleed before it becomes a possible emergency. I would look at him and wonder, how does it feel like? When you pinch your nose and tilt your head back, does the blood flow back to choke you, the same you feel when you accidentally breather in water in a swimming pool?
I remembered wishing, with what little wisdom I had then, that one day my nose would bleed with the same grandeur as my classmate's had.

我喜欢陈绮贞!

我喜欢陈绮贞! ( translation: I like Cheer Chen!)
She's one of the few singers who can make me feel happy and depressed at the same time (read: being unable to sleep at 2am due to inexplicable sadness induced by listening to her songs, yet compulsively replaying her songs on my mp3 player at night). In fact, she's catching up with Stina Nordenstam in my list of respectable artistes!
Most artistes simply induce one-dimensional feelings: anger (My Chemical Romance) ; inspired (Jimmy Eat World); psychotic (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Garbage); confused (Eason Chan, Sarah Harmer, Rilo Kiley) or plain spaced-out (Air, Frou Frou). Oh. But all the artistes mentioned here are also on my list of respectable artistes.
The phrase "drowned in sound" holds a sudden new meaning for me.

Freedom
1st December 2005
Multipurpose Sports Hall 2Enthusiasm.Towering stacks of notes and back-breaking textbooks, all flagged out with psychedelic post-its, putting your regular rainbow to shame.
But never mind whether a thousand multi-coloured flags will achieve its intended purpose. :p
Fatigue.Like fissures forming under chronic pressure, caffine-suppressed lethargy is finally seeping through.
Listless eyes survey each other, silently mocking at the gargatuan eyebags of others.
This spirit of lassitude is infectious.
Zzzzzz...
State of affection.Unprecedented emotions, feelings never envisaged.
A sense of finality hanging thick in the air.
This is the point of no return.
The Moment.A tap or two on the microphone sends waves of anticipation and distress through the hall.
Cynical products of this pedantic education system face up in unison.
A middle age
homo sapien cranks its head to the badly adjusted mike.
In an awkward angle, it attempts to clear its voice (in vain), then open his overused orifice.
With each word enunciated with protracted relish, an astoundingly celestial voice amplifies over the speakers,
"You may leave now. Happy Holidays."
This is what I call,
Freedom.
