Weekly Updates..
Hihi.. im here again.. after my friday class and resting awhile.. I realised i always blog on Fri this time.. hee..
Nway.. i removed the poll liao.. cos its abit boh.. and the date is confirmed le..
9th Oct.. Next Sunday.. pls refer to ur emails for further details.. i shall not be so long-winded and repeat.. Pple.. Sign up ok.. heee.. refer to sy for 'signing-up' details.. (haha.. macham reli got details liddat.. )
Hmmz.. updates.. nothing much lor.. another week has passed.. just that this week i travelled btw boon lay & Suntec for 4 consecutive days.. went to the
Global Entrepolis as volunteer interpreter.. B4 u start to go like "wah".. Just to explain.. I was mainly doing.. Nothing.. Supposedly, we are to help the potential Chinese or Indians or Angmohs who needed translation of some sort.. but basically.. none of them needed lor.. either they just stick to their own racial counterparts; approach only those whom they think they can communicate in with the language they know (either English of Chinese); or.. they are effectively bilingual themselves.. we are totally redundant lor..
No wonder they always say govt got too much money.. ( i hope i dun get myself into trouble with the law by saying this) .. EDB actually got like over 100 student interpreters from NUS and NTU lor.. pay us ( yesh its volunteer for FREE one.. but they got reimburse for transportation.. so its "pay" in that sense la) to go Suntec to eat and drink.. i think that was the most meaningful thing i did liao.. they had so much refreshments for the guests i think reli got alot of leftovers gone to waste lor.. oh.. not to mention that wine and beer was served too! heeheee...
But ok la.. i should still mention that its reli a great experience for students like us cos its reli an eye-opener to see all these big bosses interacting and networking.. & also learnt some interesting things from the talks and exhibitions.. not to mention i was totally impressed by this 11-year old indian boy from St Stephens Pri Sch who was one of those few primary school students presenting their very-own science innovation.. He was no different from any of the experienced marketing pple who will come up to u and introduce their new product.. I was so impressed by him that I think he can come and ace my Business Communication module straight-away and beat us all hands-down...
Oh well.. thats a summary of that whole GES thingy la.. tired.. but interesting la.. not to mention.. i get abit of money which can fund for my tennis course which starts today.. ahahaha... yeah... Ok la.. i shld go do some work b4 heading for home..
Meanwhile.. pple.. Go for the HSBC TTW ok?
oh yar.. i dunno why after removing the poll still got a funny box left lying there.. anyone can help in removing that? i scared anyhow make later spoil the whole layout.. hee.. thanks in advance ah..

Psycho Physics
Physics has never been my forte.
A pain in the neck since secondary school.
A stumbling block in junior college.
And now,
Physics is back with a vengeance.
It's out for blood, my blood.
There are three basic categories that you can classify the myriad of questions and problems in Physics.
1. Mysterious AnswersYou don't understand what the question is asking of you. But mystifying, you are able to obtain the answer. After hours and hours of internal turmoil, you eventually succeed in convincing yourself that you understand the question.
But you really don't.
2. Familiar ProblemsOn first looks, the question is seemingly familiar. You are overwhelmed with joy and feel absolutely confident that you can tackle the question with much ease, thanks to the wealth of experience you have garnered over your miserly lifespan of 2 decades. But as soon as the graphite carbon of your mechanical pencil comes in contact with the whitewashed paper, your mind goes as blank as the paper.
3. English ComprehensionQuestions in later physics tutorials tend to fall into this category. You read the question with ecstasy and enthusiasm equivalent to that a 4-yr old kid reading a fairy tale. You appreciate the intricacies of the language, revere the lexicon of physical quantities and lap every twist and turn of events with zeal.
And that is all you can do about the problem, read.
On a side note, here is what some people say about the recent Physics Mid Term Test:
"I've never felt so helpless after a test in my life before..."
Alfred Gan, Bioengineering, Year 1
"It is horrible..."
Chong Weng Keong, Chemical Engineering, Year 1
"Fail liao fail liao, I only can do a few question!"
Han Ze Chou, Industrial Engineering System, Year 1
"I think I'm gonna enter the Dean's List... The Dean's BLACKLIST... "
Edmund Chen, Common Engineering, Year 1
"Haha!" *Raises both hands up and laugh*
Sandip Mahapatra, Bioengineering, Year 1
"I was shocked when I saw what was said in the forum (Physics Forum on IVLE). We set this paper so that all of you can score."Dr. Yeo Ye, Physics Level 1 Advisor of PC1431/32

Exam countdown: 14 hours 13 minutes
Wah I've had a lot of nerve. I have been rabidly watching Korean drama online when my papers start tomorrow. * panic panic panic*
Anyway I must conclude that Asian sites are the best in the world. They have all the streaming media, consistently updated by a group of very dedicated fans. :D
It doen't even matter that I don't understand korean and no subtitles are available. I'm horning my skills to become a master at deciphering subtle body language. An active imagination is a prerequisite.

Diving expedition. :P
Selamat malam, teman-teman saya (Greetings, my friends)
As requested, I shall begin blogging out our diving trip to Tioman! For those who have no idea, Ade and I went for a 3day 2night diving trip to Tioman. We lived onboard this vessel called MVseaborne (famous for their awesome *and i really really mean awesome* TEN-COURSE meals onboard!!! Imagine having fresh crisp roti-prata for breakfast while you're in the middle of nothingness.)
Day 1 (friday): We departed from Seaborne Int'll at Singapore Yatch Club at about 8pm. Sadly, we had to squeeze into a van with a very irritating guy called Suzy. hahaha. He made the land ride extremely excruciating, with simply...noise. :P Crossed the checkpoints and made our way to Mersing, where the company's own ship is parked (in the company-owned seaport). The journey took a disgusting 3 to 4 hours. Our butts were almost cracked by the time we reached the port.
When we got there at about 12am, we were informed that we were experiencing extremely low tides, and so the ship could not leave the port until the tides rose a little (estimated at 5am). So ok fine. We had our briefing on 'onboard etiquettes' and then went to our respective rooms to sleep. Lucky us. We (about 7 of us, mostly our clique) kena-ed the deck. Yep, so we slept in the open air. It wasn't so bad at first, cos of the fresh wind/air. THEN...........
Attack of the mozzies. The rest didn't get bitten all that bad. BUT. One particular mozzie decided to give me a kiss. And lucky me, got bitten on the lip. Doesn't sound v bad?? Take a look at how i looked like when i woke up in the morning. I got a shock of my freaking life.

I swear, my lips never looked more sexy. It could have made Angelina Jolie swoon with jealousy. It felt damn freaking uncomfortable la!!! And HEAVY, by the way, to have such a swollen lip. Anyway the swell subsided after I got into seawater. The miracles of salt....
Yeh so soon after morning came, the ship set sail for the sea. *tongue twister* AND THEN...hohoho. Our dear Ade started to see stars. Literally. Hahahaha. She had a very bad case of motion-sickness and kept throwing up on Saturday.
Day 2 (Saturday): Diving began. :) *finally* We had our first dive in the SHALLOWEST of waters. ONE METRE DEEP. Reason being our instructor wanted to test out our basic skills first. So we (the four open water babies + 2 guardian angels + Ronald, our lovely most amazing most charismatic most funloving instructor :P) left the ship at some ulupandan place...and the four of us were told to snorkel to shallower waters. AND THEN WOW. I took a peer into the water through my snorkelling mask.
And I fell in love...at first sight.
You should have been there. The corals were of the most beautiful colours you could ever think of. The fishes...purple, yellow, orange, small, medium (no, no big. duh..shallow waters eh. what you expect. :P)...all circling around the corels.
Wow. Heaven. That was my first dive experience. It was....more than just captivating. It was just simply (though cliche) ....beyond words.
As for Ade...I think she was busy trying not to puke. Haha. And also cos she didn't complete her second pool session due to her timely monthly hindrance, she didn't learn some basic exercises that we had already learnt. So I guess she was rather apprehensive about learning those skills in open sea. (me almost drowning during our second pool session didn't really help much in elevating her fears. HAHA) I should post some pictures of how she looked like while onboard the ship.

Can you see the "please kill me now" face beyond the smile???? Haha. She could always be found at the same spot whenever she was onboard. There. Always sitting there and staring into the vast sea. Supposed to have a calming effect on her motion-sickness. And like she said....she only had one look during the entire stay onboard. this -_- . Can't see very clearly from the photo though.

This is us, the open water babies....plus our two assistant instructors in-training...and our instructor. :) Ok here Ade has a 'mourning' face also. Haha. She looks like she wants to die.

Some of the dive sites we went to.

If you're wondering why the rock is covered white, it's cos there are SO MANY SEAGULLS hovering around the area, they shit all over the rock. Serious. The seagulls are in disgusting numbers...easily 1000 of them hovering in the sky waiting for fish. I wonder how many years of shit have been collecting on that rock already. Anyway. Ya we dived near these places. Hard to relate what went on underwater...so I'll just tell you about what went on onboard and all. :)
-intermission-
*I am having extreme problems trying to upload the photos and it's already 1.15 AM. I shall turn in for the night and continue with this entry soon.... hope you've enjoyed the entry so far. night peeps*

Is this it?
I remember when I attended the orientation of Nanyang Polytechnic's Occupational Therapy (OT) course, one of the lecturers made a comment. "By your 3rd year," she said, " you will eat, drink and breathe OT."
I also remmeber that I sniggered to myself when she said that. "Siao. She think I don't have a life is it? I want to do other things too ok!"
A thoughtless comment. Now I have to eat my words.
Year 1 was ok. Amidst the flurry of anatomy, physiology, neurophysiology and basics of psychology, there was still some semblance of a normal tertiary student's life.
Year 2 wasn't quite so fun. Classes that run from 8am-6pm simply sapped my energy. Mid-term holidays that are taken up by silly assignments and presentations. And my long holidays! Eaten up by abhorrable attachements which stressed me to the point of exhaustion. Without allowance. I thought I was eating, drinking and breathing OT. But I wasn't. Not yet.
Now that I am in year 3 semester 1 and making revisions to my Final year project group proposal, when my greatest joy is going home before 6 pm, my prime leisure is watching Korean VCDS that I have watched before, my ultimate wish is to have at least 2 free days to study before my exams begin next week.. I know that...
The fun hasn't even begun yet, my dear.
I will be eating, drinking and breathing Occupational Therapy next semester.

I am that guy
I am that guyA literary meme inspired by MercerMachine and his post that started it all (trackbacks can be seen via Tomorrow.sg).I am the baby who was placed in front of the gate of his parents' three-room HDB flat so that the neighbours' kids walking by along the corridor could play with him while his mother juggled teaching and being a new mother.
I am the toddler who spent many days playing in his maternal grandparents' retail store in North Bridge Road and enjoying the grass at Katong Park.
I am the kid who took the school bus to Primary 1 without his parents, because they had to work, and wondering why the other kids were crying when their parents were there.
I am the boy who spent many happy weekends waking up to knocks at the window at 6am to play badminton, One Leg, and Dua Bei Long ("big balloon") with his friends, the neighbourhood children, at the playground downstairs.
I am the boy who came back from the school field every recess, every PE, and after school, with muddy shoes and sweaty shirt, after a game of soccer.
I am the boy who cannot do that anymore, because the playground and the school field have become multi-storey carparks.
I am the brother who fought with you all the time when we were kids.
I am the brother who got beaten for not getting full marks at school, and who got you beaten by mom too, because you happened to be in her line of sight.
I am the brother who is different from you, and yet the same as you in so many ways.
I am the son who cried beneath the living room table, when he saw you two fight and did not know why.
I am the son who made you cry for not choosing the path you wanted for me.
I am the son who now knows how hard it is to be a parent and how much a parent is willing to do for his children.
I am the boyfriend who called you every night from camp after booking in, to talk with you for hours, lining up for the pay phone or calling from the company line and risking the wrath of the Duty Officer.
I am the boyfriend who stayed as late at your place as he possibly could, and ran after the very last Number 8 bus, so that he could take the very last Number 51, so that he did not have to take a cab or pay the midnight surcharge.
I am the boyfriend you chose to be your partner for life.
I am the husband who lost the two teddy bears used to decorate our wedding car.
I am the husband who woke up at 3am one night, after you told him it was time, and rushed you down to the hospital with his dad.
I am the husband who almost lost you when you could not stop bleeding after giving birth to our firstborn.
I am the father who did not understand why his firstborn daughter did not call him papa, or play with other children, or look him in the eye, but who knows she loves him anyway, from behind the wall that covers her mind but not her heart.
I am the father who sees himself in his son's laughter and eyes, a child born of faith.
I am the father who awaits his third child, a girl, to arrive, and who knows he is going to fall in love at first sight for the third time.
I am that man. I am that boy. I am that child.

Sounding the Death Knell
You know a blog is doomed when you begin to have people posting really strange posts such as this.
Anyway, to frustrate anyone who might be reading this, the following was what I posted on IVLE (NUS online thingy) 5 minutes ago.
Doubts on Mid-T, 2Oct: Q15 and 99. What are the values of b and sum after executing the following code segment?
int a = 5, b = 5;
int sum = 0;
sum = a++>++b?b++:a+b%a;
(A) b is 6, sum is 6
(B) b is 7, sum is 7
(C) b is 6, sum is 7
(D) b is 7, sum is 6
Same problem with understanding the expression "sum = a++>++b?b++:a+b%a".
I need to clarify, when is variable a incremented? Is it incremented after the whole line is read and computed OR is it incremented immediately after the part "a++>++b?..."
In the lecture 2 notes:
• If the increment or decrement operator is in a prefix position, the identifier is modified, and then the new value is used in evaluating the rest of the expression.
• If the increment or decrement operator is in a postfix position, the old value of the identifier is used to evaluate the rest of the expression, and then the identifier is modified.
What then defines the end of the expression?
Answer for Q9 is A.15. What is printed out by the following code fragment?
int i = 0;
if (i > 0 && 10 / i > 2)
printf(”123\n”);
else
printf(”456\n”);
(A) 123
(B) 456
(C) A compilation error occurs
(D) A runtime error occurs
I have some problem understanding the expression "i > 0 && 10 / i > 2" in the if statement.
1st ArgumentIf I check the operator precedence table, "10/i" would be done first. But wouldn't that result in a runtime error since i=0 (Division by zero)?
2nd ArgumentOr would it be better if I broke the expression into two parts "i > 0" and "10 / i > 2". Computing the first part of the expression would return a false value thus the second part is ignored. But the lack of parenthesis disturbs me (back to argument one where "/" is higher precedence than "&&" and ">").
Answer for Q15 is B.

People are strange
I like to reference things. It makes me feel accomplished. When I do my reports, I will type my references immediately after I have cited any material as it provides an instant reinforcement in my sad and boring life.
An example of a reference of a book is
Gilkeson, G. E. (1997)
Occupational Therapy Leadership: Marketing yourself, your profession and your organization. Philadelphia: F.A. Davis Company.
which is in fact,
[author's surname],[author's initials]. [Year of publication]. [Title of book - underlined or italiac].[no. of edition, if any].[State/country of publisher]:[Publisher].
Reference of journal articles are like
Dillon, T. H. (2001) Authencity in Occupational therapy Leadership: A Case Study of a Servant Leader.
The American Journal of Occupational Therapy. 55. pp. 441-448.
It is almost the same, except you have to add the title of the journal and the page numbers of the article.
More exciting references occur when you cite material from a chapter of a book written by a few authors. In this scenario, you'll have to include the editors of the book as well as the book title and the page numbers of the chapter. However, the names of the editors will have to be type in the
[editor initials]. [editor's surname]. format.
A good example will be
Holm, M.B., Rogers, J.C. & Stone, R.G. (2003). Person-Task-Environment Interventions: A Decision-making Guide. In E.B. Crepeau, E.S. Cohn, & B.A.B. Schell (Eds.)
Willard & Spackman’s Occupational Therapy. (10th edition) pp. 460-490. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins.
However, I dislike referencing internet sources because (1) they are highly likely to be inaccurate and unsubstantiated and (2) they are short and boring.
Internet references look like
Smith, P. (n.d.) Shared Leadership. [online]. Available:
http://www.opi-inc.com/shared_leadership.htm. (11 September, 2005).
Oh. Do you know you can reference a piece of conversation too?
For instance, I said to you, "Life ceases to sustain any relevance of meaning."
You can type,
Life is pointless (Hee X.J., 2005, personal communication).

I also got go for the Treetop Walk before. Xiu Juan is right, be prepared to walk and please do
plan your route before you commence this potentially fingernail breaking expedition.
I and my friends did not. As a result, we literally spend hours walking and walking and walking. We had to hitch a hike at an ulu road to get to a bus stop.
Despite that, I would recommend going on a weekday morning, then you can have the whole bridge to yourself. It's really as close to nature as you can get in Singapore (maybe other than Bukit Timah Hill) so it's quite an eye opener.
You'll never complain about climbing stairs in NUS again.

Any Life Science people excited?

Not very scenic because of the lousy camera I was using.

Tidbit for the brain
People tend to be more attracted to people who are talented and competent. But how do you become truly irresistible?
In study performed by Aronson (1969, cited in Coon, 2003), college students were asked to listen to audio tapes of supposed candidates for a "College Quiz Bowl". Two of the candidates sounded highly intelligent. The other two seemed to be of average ability. In addition, one "intelligent" and one "average" candidate clumsily spilled coffee on himself. Later, students rated the intelligent candidate who blundered as
most attractive. The
least attractive person was the candidate who was average and clumsy. Hence, the superior but clumsy person was more attractive than the person who was only superior.
This study hints that we prefer people who are "human" - competent but imperfect.

Coon, D. (2003) Social Behaviour. In
Essentials of Psychology.

Hey hey!
I went to the HSBC treetop walk.. wah really had to walk for quite a while. I think you have to walk about 4km up.. then walk about 1 km on level ground to get to the treetop bridge.. then queue and wait.. then walk among trees for about 200m, followed by climbing lots of steps (both up and down) and walk another 5 km to reach the entrance.
Hmm. Was quite shocked by the distance.. given my very sedentary lifestyle for the past 2++ years.

Pictorially Peeved
Yikes. I've been eyeing the strange sandwich making machine littered throughout NUS and have really strong doubts on the freshness of it. Dwarf sandwiched in a machine? Hmmm...
Anyway, guys and gals of 01S44, lend me your ears! If you have an individual blog of your own (e.g. Ade), please include in your link on the right hand side hoh...
Yah, back to the topic,
here are three pictures taken by my Canon Ixus V3,
Only a cognoscente can appreciate.

Asymmetrical lines traversing parallel to one another.
Delineated indistinctively, yet individualistically.

An imperial chromatic purple,
Commixed with the enigmatic black.

Doesn't it reflect the desultory state of one's mind?
Or...
Are we too superficially focused on the aesthetics?
Maybe...
A Simpler Reason would suffice:
My Canon Digital Ixus V3 is SPOILT!!!

Where have all the Ponderosas gone?
Hey since everyone is crying out foul against the busyness, let me join in the fun.
FOUL!!!
I'm going nuts. Hair falling so fast, I'm becoming a mini-har faster than with the use of a shaver. Then again...
You know its bad when you don't recognise yourself in the mirror after a night at the library.
I have a strong suspiscion there's a dwarf/hobbit/wadeva inside one of those vending machines that dispenses sandwiches... It's good stuff I tell ya. All hail the engineer who put him in there. We should start a machine-appreciation day sometime. All the Nokias and Apples deserve our deepest gratitude.
Rain, I say we cry out for rain.
One of the most entertaining activities in school (any school for that matter) would be to stare at, no not at girls, but at the guys staring at girls. Trust me, you'll get a kick out of that.
To all those too stressed out, do something different tomorrow for a change. Switch off your handphones, format your laptop, bathe with cold water, take milo for coffee, add milo to coffee, eat lunch from vending machines, wear make-up for lectures(hey wait, people actually do that), shave your hair, shave your friend's hair, buy a music CD(for once!!!), or just take the age old remedy of playing truant.
So till we collect one too many yellowcards from the authority of life, just play on and move along ladies and gents. Have a good one.

Gah! (again)
Firstly, HOW COME SO LITTLE PEOPLE ARE BLOGGING?! HELLO?! HELLO?! HELLO?!
I feel as though this blog has become my personal blog! No! It wasn't meant to be like this!
Oh that was me going cranky as usual over the insignificant stuff.
Anyway, I thought today was a pretty good start to school, never mind that the past week of holdays was really worse than normal school days, with silly reports and FYP. We visited one of the SAMH (Singapore Association for Mental Health) day centres. Really quite amazed and impressed by the variety of programmes they have there. Thinking of volunteering there, especially for outings and such. Anybody interested?
So. After the SAMH visit, me and Jojo went combing around a small area of Toa Payoh in search of good and cheap earrings. Toa Payoh has a lot of cheap bags and stuff. And being the true blue El Cheapo, I bought a bag AND a pair of earring - all for $10!!
Hahaha I was so pleased with myself! :D
I went home, eager to show off my reasonable purchases to my mom. I ripped off the plastic packaging of my new bag and presented it to her.
And she said, "Aiyoh! Wah you really don't how to choose your bags ah? Why you buy this kind of Ah-mah bag?"
Errrrrr. Hello? I'm twenty-one liao leh. You expect me to carry pink bags with hello kitty printed on them ala Cyndi Wang is it?
So I fumed all the way through dinner and managed to calm down by 2210 hours, the time I finished my written work. I put on my new earrings and went out to the living room to show off again.
"Eh? Very auntie leh!"
Arrgh! The worst thing is, I rushed to look at my new earrings in the mirror, and they do look very funny. Gaudy, even. My goodness. I seem to have little fate with nice earring nowadays. Maybe I should just let my earholes close up.

Circuitous Cycle
13 Steps to A Doomed NUS Life1. Attend a lecture without bothering to peruse the notes in advance.
2. Struggle to keep awake or shiver in the sub-zero temperatures until you’ve exhausted your energy, then proceed struggling to keep awake.
3. Leave the lecture theatre enlightened that you’re confounded in an imbroglio of information.
4. Be reminded that online assignments and tutorials are just days away.
5. Kidnap people that cross your path and coerce them to form study groups with you.
6. Discourse, discuss and disgust.
7. Attempt the multitude of assignments.
8. Face internal turmoil, painstakingly nurture a luxuriant growth of ash white hair and convert your brain cells into suicide bombers.
9. Attend the tutorials.
10. Suffer an immense blow on realizing that carelessness and misconceptions are your best friends.
11. Frustrate, irritate and shorten your tutor’s lifespan.
12. Leave the room with your head high, proud and triumphant as you have finally comprehended the most abstruse and archaic concepts.
13. Break down in tears when upon consciousness that another 4 modules are waiting patiently to be dealt with.

I. Am. Feeling. So. Sian.
Getting very sick of sitting in front of the computer. Reminds me of the silly computing days in VJC when I had spend hours just to program and debug a silly program. Silly silly silly. And I didn't even manage to complete the silly coursework.
Feel a sudden affinity with the word 'silly'. It reminds me of this cute little boy whom I met in my pediatric attachment. He's on the autistic spectrum disorder, so he's a bit impaired when it comes to social interaction. He takes things very literally, and he can't tell if someone is lying to him, noe can he read body language very well. And he likes to repeat "silly-billy", which I thought was adorable. Apparently, the other 6 year olds don't find it so cute after being labelled "silly-billy" the whole day.
Now doing a case-study on spinal cord injury. 29 year old male, road traffic accident, spine fractured around C8 level (that's just slightly below the level of your neck), estranged from his family, used to have a lot of grilfriends but possibly gay now, indepedent-minded, highly libral in values, smart, moody. So what do I do with him?
Hmm. I wish I know.
