Matías Romero Avendaño (24 February 1837 – 30 December 1898) was a Mexican politician and diplomat who served three times as Secretary of Finance and twice as ambassador of Mexico to the United States during the 19th century.

Romero was a protégé of Benito Juarez, the Mexican leader of the liberal forces who led an effort to expel the French government and their puppet, Emperor Maximillian, from Mexico. In 1861, Romero was sent to the United States to lobby US support against this French invasion.
