The treadmill has a NEMA 5-20P plug on it and has a label that says it draws 18 amps at 120 V. Is it safe to replace the 15A outlet with a 20A (NEMA 5-20R) outlet and plug the treadmill into it?

Aug 14, 2024 · A UL requirement is that all 15A faced receptacles (i.e. NEMA 5-15 sockets) must have 20A passthru. The companion rule to this is NEC 210.21(B)(3) which allows 15A receptacles on 20A circuits. Thus, the receptacle may have a 12.5A and a 7.2A device plugged into it. Or there may be 12A here and 7A on the next socket (this is called pass-through).

Aug 19, 2023 · I've read in various places that 15A receptacles are safe on 20A circuits because the "yoke" (the part that connects the two receptacles to the line) is actually rated for 20 amps. However, I can't find any documentation for this being true. The Leviton model available at Home Depot only shows 15A on it's spec sheet.

(pass-through is where you use the two screws on the receptacle to continue a circuit, rather than pigtailing.) The purpose of this rule is to make it legal and safe to do exactly what you are doing. I'm assuming that since the receptacle can be run with 2 hot wires by breaking the tab that it is designed to handle 15A at each outlet and not as a whole. Just wanted to run this by someone else.
