Mar 5, 2024 · I have a 2010 Ram 1500, I have noticed there is leaking at the rear diff and I have a howling when coasting between 30-40mph. I am assuming the pinion seal is the culprit but I've never replaced one before. I saw the torque spec for the Pinion Seal NUT is 210 ft lb and the flange bolts is 85 ft lb.

Feb 25, 2018 · But I used a solid spacer for the pinion, so just a matter of taking the time to replace the pinion seal. Make sure you index the front prop shaft to the companion flange when you do the job with a paint marker or metal punch so that you can get it lined back up the way it was previously installed.

Nov 1, 2012 · If the diff is out you can tell easily by how the pinion turns (does it bind). Because of the axles and brakes that will be tough to tell when in the truck. You might be lucky and it'll be fine. You fixed the leaky seal for only a couple of bucks. If the pinion bearings are now binding you'll begin to hear a whine from the diff.

Dec 30, 2022 · Did 8.5 pinion seal about 10 years and 30,000 miles ago. Marked the pinion and the nut, also counted threads/turns until the nut came off after being loosed. Went back together with the thread count and aligned the punch marks. Never any issue with the rear end but the #$@“+# seal has just started leaking again.

Jul 11, 2018 · The seal already had grease in it. 3 Lubed the flange seal surface with gear oil, put some RTV on the flange splines, put some RTV on the flat of the nut. 4 Installed pinion flange and tightened the pinion nut (mopar 6507901AA) to 100 ft/lb, checked rotational torque.
