Uses about 90 yds
of 4 ply worsted weight yarn - any color (or combo of colors)
Size G (4 mm) or
H
(4.5 mm)crochet
hooks. It depends how tightly you crochet.
Gauge: 3 sc
=1" 4 rows = 1"
Begin with
CUFF using G hook:
Chain 13. (16)
Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in 2nd
chain from the hook. Sc in remaining chs
across . Ch 1, turn
(total of 12, 15 sts)
Rows
2-18 22: Sc
in
each sc to end of row in BLO (backloops only); ch 1 turn.
Repeat to row 18 (22) maintaining 12 sc (15
sc)
across.
(Joining) Fold cuff in half bringing
beginning row to ending row and line up
sc
stitches to first row of cuff. Slip Stitch (ss)
corresponding
stitches together to form the cuff. Turn so seam is on the
inside. You
are now working on the outside of mitten.
(change colors here if you wish)
BODY OF MITTEN: (You might want to place a stitch marker
or piece of yarn, on the first stitch of the round, to keep track).
Rnd1: Make first sc of
the mitten's body at the top of where you just joined
the cuff. Then continure to sc around the top of the cuff till
you have
21 more, evenly spaced sc's. (22 (26)
sts
around cuff)

2-4 6:
Sc in each sc around, join at end of each
row with a sl st, ch 1 and turn for next row being sure to maintain 22 (26) sts
in
each row.
Rnds 5,
7: 1 sc in
first sc then ch 3.. Skip the next 3 sc and sc in 4th sc
(this
creates a hole where the mitten's thumb will be attached).
Continue on
with your rnd to the end, join with a sl st, ch 1, turn. (19 sts and 3
ch sts
in your row)

6 8
: Sc in each sc and the 3 chain stitches all around, ss to join,
ch 1,
turn. (You should now have 22 (26)
sts again)

7-14 18:
Sc in each sc around,
maintaining 22 (26)
sc on each row. (Do not join, just crochet in the round)
DECREASE ROUNDS

(decreasing
rnd): *1 sc in next sc, sc 2 together* , repeat around (14
sc)

16 20 (dec rnd): *1 sc in
next sc, sc 2 together* , repeat around, sl st to
join, ch
1 and turn (10 sc)

17 21 (dec rnd): *1
sc in next sc, sc 2 together* , repeat around, sl
st to
join, ch 1 and turn (7 sc) cut yarn leaving 8" tail, pull yarn through
last ch 1. Using a darning needle, weave yarn through the 7 sc of
last
row, pull tight to close up end of mitten, weave yarn to secure closing
and
fasten off.
THUMB
Rnd 1:
Join yarn, ch 1
and 1 sc in the first sc of thumb opening, 1 sc in
next 3 sc. Pick up 5 sc around the remaining thumb opening, sl st
to
join, ch 1, turn (9 sc) 12
Rnds 2
– 5 7: Sc in each sc around. (9 sc)
Rnd
6,7 8,9 (dec
rows): sc 2 sts together around.
Cut yarn leaving about an 8" tail,
pull yarn through last ch 1. Stitch opening shut, weave yarn tail
inside thumb, back and forth for several stitches and fasten
off.
Make a 2nd mitten the same way!
