Matchmaking and rank system

Learn more about the current mechanics of matchmaking and awarding Trophies.

After the release of the 7.0 update (on February 19, 2021), many of you have questions about how the current rank system works. That is why we decided to provide some more details on the current mechanics of matchmaking and awarding Trophies at the end of the battle.

However, let’s start with the basics – what the rank in Battle Prime means.

RANK SYSTEM

Your rank represents your ability to win a battle. Comparing two teams, the rank shows you the probability that one team will win against the other. The higher the difference, the more like a given team is going to win. When two teams with the same rank are matched up with each other, they both have an equal shot at winning.

As for the individual player, the algorithm used in Battle Prime assigns two values to each player: an estimation of his skill and the uncertainty of this estimation. The estimation of your skill is probabilistic. In general, the more battles you complete, the more information the Battle Prime rank system has about you, and the more confident it is about this estimation.

RANK UPDATE

The rank in Battle Prime is updated solely on the outcome of the battle. If this outcome is unexpected, for example, you lost against players with a lower rank than your team, the rank of the losing team will decrease significantly. If you lost against players with the same rank as yours, the decrease will be smaller.

Let’s take a simple example: two players (PLAYER_1 & PLAYER_2) battle in the DUEL mode. The values in this example do not reflect the actual updates that would happen with players’ rank but it should give you an understanding of the situation.

So, PLAYER_1 has 4,000 rank points and has been playing at that level for quite some time – the system has a low uncertainty in its rank. PLAYER_1 faces PLAYER_2 who has 3,000 rank points and is still relatively new to the game, and our system is attempting to determine the estimation of PLAYER_2 skill.

PLAYER_1 loses to PLAYER_2.

Due to the low uncertainty value in PLAYER_1 rank and skill, the system will consider this loss as just an accident. However, the PLAYER_1 rank still will be decreased by 60 points. Moreover, while updating the PLAYER_1 rank, the system will consider the rank of the player who won. For example, if PLAYER_1 lost to someone with a rank of 3,800, it would lose 30 points. If PLAYER_1 had a battle against a 4,100-ranked player and lost, it would lose only 10 points.

As for PLAYER_2, its rank will be increased by 100 points. This large increase in its rank is a result of PLAYER_2 being a fairly unknown player to the system. The system is still not sure about the PLAYER_2 rank, it sees potential in the PLAYER_2, and tries to determine its real rank as soon as possible.

GAINING/LOSING POINTS AMONG A TEAM

Now let’s consider the change of rank among the team members. For players with the same rank level, the update of the rank will depend on how confident in their skill estimation the system is. Let’s say that two players in the team have 4,000 rank points each. However, if one of them has played a lot more battles than the other (he has a low uncertainty), the second player will gain/lose more points.

WHAT AFFECT THE RANK UPDATE

The rank change is based on:

  • The chance of a player/team winning the battle.

  • Whether or not the player won the match.

  • Personal performance.

  • The large skill difference between players/teams has a dramatic outcome based on who won the match as per the PLAYER_1/PLAYER_2 example.

  • Inactivity is also included.

RANK PLAYLIST

The list of available Ranked Battle Modes can be found in the Battle Mode Selection tab.

Participate in these battles to earn rank points – in Battle Prime, rank points are represented by Trophies.

With the start of a new competitive season, each player has 2,500 Trophies (Master League). There are 6 leagues in Battle Prime: Fighter, Warrior, Master, Veteran, Hero, and Legend. As you increase your rank, you move from one league to another and climb the leaderboard, receiving rewards.

Sure, we understand that the current system is not perfect right now, and we are already working on its second iteration. We are going to provide some improvements that will allow the system to determine the update of the rank after the battle more accurately.

We will share more details on the upcoming improvements of the rank system in separate news closer to their release. As for now, we would like to thank you for the useful feedback on the work of the current system. Remember, only together we will make Battle Prime better.

Sincerely, the Battle Prime team.
