The Vermont Bar Exam is a 2-day exam. Day 1 offers two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions in the morning and six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) in the afternoon. Day 2 is the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam.

Administrative Law, Agency, Bankruptcy, Commercial Paper, Corporations, Equity, Family Law, Legal Ethics, Partnerships, Personal Property, Secured Transactions, Taxation, Trusts, VT Practice & Procedure, Wills, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Constitutional Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.

What’s the minimum score for MPRE?

A scaled score of 80 on the MPRE is required for admission.

How is the exam scored?

The MBE is weighted 50%, the MEE 30% and the MPT 20%. The scores are then combined to determine if the applicant has achieved a passing score of 270.

When are the results released?

Results are released approximately 8-10 weeks after the bar exam.

Can I transfer my MBE scores from another jurisdiction?

Vermont accepts scaled MBE scores of 135 or higher from other jurisdictions, provided the exam was taken within the previous four administrations.

What about reciprocity across states?

In order to be eligible for admission without taking the Vermont Bar Exam, the applicant must have engaged in the active practice of law for 5 of the 10 years (or reciprocal state’s time period if three years or more) immediately preceding the application. Special rules apply for NH and ME attorneys.
