Overview

We want to bring art to underprivileged students in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, through public programming and hands-on learning experiences with professional street artists. In creating indoor and outdoor murals at P371K, we will use the transformative power of art to improve student behavior and our overall school climate. Our goal is to establish and maintain a safe and supportive school, a community that promotes positive academic achievement, and social emotional competence in order for our students to become productive members of society.

What Are We Looking At?

P371K is one of two high schools in Brooklyn that service students with emotional and intellectual disabilities. An emotional disability does not always allow our students to express themselves in socially appropriate ways. While the school is well lighted, the hallways are stark, and lack positive energy and updated art installations. What was once a student school yard is now used for staff parking. This project will help bring our students back into a section of this space through creating large-scale outdoor murals in a collaborative effort with the artists.

Writing and teaching a project-based art curriculum has the dual benefit of providing our students with a more socially appropriate form of self-expression as well as a heightened visual awareness of public art. Our students will work closely with artists to experience the creative process and take part in beautifying their surroundings. This project will be shared with the Sunset Park community as well. P371K is located on 4th Avenue – a major artery running through Brooklyn.
