Johnson and working on the 1968 presidential campaigns of senators Robert F. Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy. Drawing on Richard's journals and letters, Goodwin explores his starry-eyed enthusiasm for the landmark civil rights and Great Society measures he helped bring about, and his disillusionment after he left the White House in 1965 and turned against Johnson's escalation of the Vietnam War. Goodwin credits him with nudging RFK into an antiwar position and, by orchestrating McCarthy's New Hampshire primary victory, dissuading Johnson from running for reelection. I met Doris Kearns Goodwin at the Civil War Roundtable dinner after her publication of Team of Rivals, and have been captivated by her writing ever since. This book about her glorious relationship with Richard Goodwin is magnificent. They personify one aspect of what makes America great. The notion that we can make the world a greater place by uniting good thoughts with good deeds, kindness and tolerance.
Wow.
The boxes contained central pieces to familiar events making it all so less abstract. The story was from the inside and this is something like I have never before experienced. You feel the history not just read it. This lady can write.
