These small clocks were developed in the early 19th century and originally made for travelling. Their cases are often rectangular, usually guilt brass, with a carrying handle and glass panels.

Antique Bracket Clocks

The name comes from weight driven clocks made in the 17th & 18th centuries ('true bracket clocks') that were mounted on a wall bracket to allow room for their hanging weights. Later, spring driven clocks continued to be made in the bracket style.

Mantel clocks, often very decorative pieces, are small form clocks originally intended to be placed on a shelf or mantel above a fireplace. In contrast to wall clocks, whose movements were attached to the back board, the shelf clock had its movement supported by a seat board.

Longcase Clocks

MAPPIN & WEBB LONDON LONG CASED OAK CLOCK

The term Longcase clock encompasses Grandfather, Grandmother and Granddaughter clocks. The difference being the size of the clock, with Grandfather being the biggest and Granddaughter the smallest. All are considered Longcase clocks. These clocks are tall, usually around 5 to 8 feet, freestanding pendulum driven clocks with the pendulum housed inside the main case.

Longcase clocks usually feature decorated or carved towers (or waists of the case) and hoods or bonnets that surround the clock's face. Most longcase clocks chime on each hour or fraction of an hour.

The clockmaker William Clement is credited with design of the longcase clock in the late 17th century.

Granddaughter Clocks

Grand daughter clocks are the smallest of the longcase clocks, usually up to 1.5 m or 5 ft.
