Its free and full functioned and NO ADS!... You won't be sorry! :)Also, I just went to their site...they have a version for all Operating Systems! Even IOS...That should be good news for Apple Users!Correction:

This app is awesome and glad the VLC team made an official app for TVs with FireTV built in. I have Toshiba FireTV and the built in media player is horrible and freezes up constantly just when trying to play a file but not with VLC app.My mp4 videos load up fast and play smoothly without any trouble, and image quality is a clear and sharp. It even will remember where you left off on a videos. Scanning through a video and quick and efficient as well. This should be the first app you download if you have one of these type of TVs and you will be set in having it as a viable offline media player solution from your USB flash drive or external hard drive. Just be sure they are formatted as FAT32 or else the drive won't recognized.

Let's start by clearing up some confusion. I've seen several posts saying that this version of VLC is useless on the FireTV Stick. But that's not true. Yes, there is no attached storage for the FTVS. And yes, it has trouble finding my network attached media. But it works extremely well as a replacement player for Plex. I've got Plex on my stick and the built in player leaves a lot to be desired. Both the native and experimental player are slow and because the native player doesn't like formats like AVI, it has to transcode the video, reducing quality and slowing down the stream.

VLC for Fire is a great replacement player for Plex. And in that regard, it works extremely well. I was able to throw AVI, FLV and MP4 files at it and it began streaming in less than a few seconds. It also was fast to seek, something that the native Plex player is awful at. The videos being played by VLC simply look better than the ones coming from the Plex player. And so again, I think this version of VLC for the FireTV stick is totally useful.

It's not perfect though. As others have noted, there are troubles accessing your network media. Also, when using it with Plex, I lost audio when fast forwarding through the video. (This was resolved by tinkering with the settings.) The biggest complaint I have is that it does not support multi-part files, so some of my older videos which were split into two parts will not play in full. I'm not sure if this is a Plex issue or a VLC issue, but I know that both Plex and Kodi handles these files without a problem, so I'm guessing it's a VLC issue. Also, even though I had the "resume" option turned on, videos sent to VLC from Plex did not get the "Do you want to resume where you left off?" option. That's annoying, but not a deal breaker.

In summary, if you have a FireTV or FireTV Stick, this makes an excellent external player. It's not perfect, but hopefully future updates will resolve the very minor issues it has right now.

I think this app is a perfect example of why Amazon needs separate app stores, one for Fire TV/Stick, and one for other devices. The use and capabilities of Fire TV are fundamentally different than Kindle and other devices. For starters, Fire TV has no keyboard, so any type of alphanumeric input requires the app maker to build a 'keyboard' into the app. There are too many apps that assume the user is on a tablet and thus already has a keyboard, yet these apps are still made available to Fire TV despite not being able to function properly.

Secondly, this app may work great for Kindle and other devices which have user accessible storage, but the Fire TV has no such storage. All media playable on the Fire TV has to come from somewhere else, namely servers. Netflix servers, YouTube servers, Amazon servers, and for our personal media, from a local server. That's just the way it is with Fire TV. EVERYTHING comes from a server. Yet like so many other users, all I got was VLC spinning round and round without actually connecting to my local server, despite being able to see them just fine. Which males this app useless on the Fire TV.

It may work beautifully on the Kindle, but despite it's name, it's just not suitable for Fire TV.

(Please Amazon, we need a separate store for Fire TV/Stick, including ONLY those apps which are fully functional on these devices.)
