Emerald Blaze by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #5

As Prime magic users, Catalina Baylor and her sisters have extraordinary powers—powers their ruthless grandmother would love to control. Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state, but that has risks as well. When House Baylor is under attack and monsters haunt her every step, Catalina is forced to rely on handsome, dangerous Alessandro Sagredo, the Prime who crushed her heart.

The nightmare that Alessandro has fought since childhood has come roaring back to life, but now Catalina is under threat. Not even his lifelong quest for revenge will stop him from keeping her safe, even if every battle could be his last. Because Catalina won't rest until she stops the use of the illicit, power-granting serum that's tearing their world apart.

I'm a complete Ilona Andrews fan girl. They write it. I love it, and will reread them over and over again. I love all of the characters and rich worlds. Catalina is a bit different than some of her predecessors. She's quieter, calmer, and more calculating, less brash as it were, and I love the added depth she brings. That doesn't keep her from getting in over her head at times, and it was incredibly enjoyable getting to see her work her way out of the latest mess.

Onto the romance side of things. After Alessandro left, the last thing Catalina wanted was to be paired with him again. So when she's forced into accepting him as her bodyguard, boy oh boy do the sparks fly. The two are like oil and water and yet when they do come together in sync, whoo boy, talk about swoon! I also really enjoyed getting to see further into his past and the revelations on why he is the way he is, and choices he has made were earth shattering. Talk about ramping the intensity up to eleven!

All in all, EMERALD BLAZE is a fantastic installment in the Hidden Legacy series that let me clamoring for more. Fans of the series will be more than pleased with Catalina's latest adventure.

Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #4

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power, and family bloodlines are the new currency of society…

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the Head of her House. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian Prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her House–and her heart.

To say I was excited to read Catalina’s first full length novel would be a gross understatement. I utterly love anything Ilona Andrews writes, and each new book goes on my favorites shelf without a hesitation. SAPPHIRE FLAMES was no exception. We had a little taste of Catalina in the novella, Diamond Fire, but it only whet my appetite for more. While reading this book felt like coming home to a beloved series, Catalina is a very different character than Nevada. While they both have an iron will, Catalina is much more reserved and cautious than her older sister. Being in charge and responsible for her house doesn’t come naturally for her, but she’s finding her way, and I really enjoyed getting to see her grow.

The romance this time around was oh so very fun and delicious. Alessandro seems like the perfect match for Catalina, not that she’ll make it even remotely easy for him. The attraction between the two is off the charts, and the buildup is perfect. However he’s very mysterious and cagey at times, and Catalina has a lot of trust issues due to her ability to ensnare without even trying. Things didn’t move too quickly so I feel like their relationship only gave us a taste of what’s to come, and I can’t wait.

If you haven’t read the Hidden Legacy series, well what are you waiting for? Nevada’s trilogy was fantastic, and Catalina’s is off to an amazing start. I cannot recommend this series any higher! I’ll be counting down the days until the next book, and it can’t come quick enough. Yet another fantastic read from Ilona Andrews, SAPPHIRE FLAMES is not to be missed.

Diamond Fire by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #3.5

Nevada Frida Baylor and Connor Ander Rogan cordially invite you to join their wedding celebration. Summoning, weather manipulation, and other magical activities strictly forbidden.

Catalina Baylor is looking forward to wearing her maid of honor dress and watching her older sister walk down the aisle. Then the wedding planner gets escorted off the premises, the bride’s priceless tiara disappears, and Rogan's extensive family overruns his mother’s home. Someone is cheating, someone is lying, and someone is plotting murder.

To make this wedding happen, Catalina will have to do the thing she fears most: use her magic. But she’s a Baylor and there’s nothing she wouldn't do for her sister's happiness. Nevada will have her fairy tale wedding, even if Catalina has to tear the mansion apart brick by brick to get it done.

DIAMOND FIRE is a bridge novella that does a great job of tying up a few things from Nevada's series and transitioning us to Catalina's. I really enjoyed getting that additional closure for Nevada and it was also a lot of fun seeing her from a different perspective. She came across so strong in her series, to see her as a mini almost-bridezilla was a lot of fun.

On Catalina's side, being in her head was a lot different as she's in a much younger and inexperienced stage of her life. If this novella is anything to go by, her series is going to be very enjoyable getting to see her really grow and blossom. Even in the short amount of time that this story covers she made a lot of ground, and I can't wait to see how things progress.

All in all, DIAMOND FIRE is an incredibly entertaining novella that will satisfy fans of the original series and wet their appetite for the next.

Early Review: Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews

Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews
Kate Daniels #10

Kate has come a long way from her origins as a loner taking care of paranormal problems in post-Shift Atlanta. She's made friends and enemies. She's found love and started a family with Curran Lennart, the former Beast Lord. But her magic is too strong for the power players of the world to let her be.

Kate and her father, Roland, currently have an uneasy truce, but when he starts testing her defenses again, she knows that sooner or later, a confrontation is inevitable. The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate's doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows their time is up.
Kate Daniels sees no other choice but to combine forces with the unlikeliest of allies. She knows betrayal is inevitable. She knows she may not survive the coming battle. But she has to try.

For her child.

For Atlanta.

For the world.

Let me just start by admitting how devastated I am that this is the last Kate and Curran book! Considering how much I love this series and these characters, MAGIC TRIUMPHS had mighty big shoes to fill in order to meet my expectations for a proper send off. After finishing, I realized I shouldn't have worried nor doubted this amazingly fantastic author duo. MAGIC TRIUMPHS was everything I could have hoped for and more to end their series. Everything and I do mean everything comes to a head in this book, including events from Hugh's book. The proverbial bleep hits the fan... And then splatters. It's just that intense and I truly loved every minute of it.

Kate and Curran are fantastic, as is the entire rest of the character cast. But honestly it's the newest edition that completely and utterly stole the show for me. Conlan has one heck of a personality packed into his little but mighty body. He'll be a force to be reckoned with that sure loves to give his mother a run for her money. I also really enjoyed the changes he brought in Kate as a mother where she's so loving but utterly and completely neurotic. And seeing her struggle and eventually come to terms with her beserker level protection when the little man is threatened rang a chord in this mamma's heart as well. Motherhood, no matter unconventional her circumstances are, suits her.

While I'm so sad to be saying goodbye to one of my all time favorite couples, I can't really complain in the end after being given this gift of a great read. MAGIC TRIUMPHS is utter magic from start to finish and fans of the series should run not walk to their nearest bookstore and snatch this one up immediately. Bravo!

Early Review: Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews

Iron and Magic by Ilona Andrews
The Iron Covenant #1

No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.

Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she's trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.

Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”

Holy smokes! Ilona Andrews has done it again! What higher praise can I give other than that they did the impossible. They took the most reviled character from the Kate Daniels world, and made him not only likable but swoon-worthy. I'm seriously in awe of their skill. It's so amusing that this book came from an April Fool's joke they played thinking no one would believe Hugh of all people could get his own romance book. And then the public outcry when it was revealed to be just a joke, hilarious! So needless to say this writing duo had their work cut out for them, and they achieved the goal masterfully. But don't worry, they didn't make Hugh a romance worthy hero by emasculating him, far from it. They just peeled back a few layers we didn't get to see through Kate's eyes AND they gave him a heroine with the ability to meet him step for step. Impressive doesn't even begin to touch this book.

What's even more impressive is the plotline and story. It would have been easy to just focus on the task of making Hugh likable, but they also gave us one heck of a storyline. I really enjoyed how the events tied into the world, and the potential overall reaching arcs for the series as a whole. Some pretty big things happen, especially at the end, and I can't wait to see how that ties into Kate's final book and future Hugh books as well.

Hat's off yet again to the fabulous writing duo, Ilona Andrews. Simply put, they nailed it with IRON AND MAGIC.

Release Day Review: Wildfire by Ilona Andrews

Wildfire by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #3

Just when Nevada Baylor has finally come to accept the depths of her magical powers, she also realizes she’s fallen in love. Connor “Mad” Rogan is in many ways her equal when it comes to magic, but she’s completely out of her elements when it comes to her feelings for him. To make matters more complicated, an old flame comes back into Rogan’s life…

Rogan knows there’s nothing between him and his ex-fiance, Rynda Sherwood. But as Nevada begins to learn more about her past, her power, and her potential future, he knows she will be faced with choices she never dreamed of and the promise of a life spent without him.

As Nevada and Rogan race to discover the whereabouts of Rynda’s kidnapped husband and are forced to confront Nevada’s grandmother, who may or may not have evil motives, these two people must decide if they can trust in each other or allow everything to go up in smoke.

Oh. My. Goodness. WILDFIRE was simply amazing. The Hidden Legacy series has been stellar, but this one? This one knocked it right out of the ballpark. This is one of those books where you finish, and you just want to start reading it all over again. It's simply that good. I'm a huge Ilona Andrews fan, particularly the Kate Daniels series, but The Hidden Legacy series takes things to a whole new level.

Readers will be very pleased that nearly all of the running threads and unknowns in this series have been well wrapped up. From the secrets surrounding Nevada's sister's abilities, to all the political issues, and dangers to the family, and OF COURSE the romance between Nevada/Rogan, and so much more. It really is incredible just how satisfying this book was, and not one single wrap up felt forced or "too neat." It was perfect. That being said, the door is left open for more books and I could not possibly be happier.

All in all, WILDFIRE was everything I had hoped for and then some. Bravo, Ilona Andrews, Bravo!

White Hot by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #2

Nevada Baylor has a unique and secret skill—she knows when people are lying—and she's used that magic (along with plain, hard work) to keep her colorful and close-knit family's detective agency afloat. But her new case pits her against the shadowy forces that almost destroyed the city of Houston once before, bringing Nevada back into contact with Connor "Mad" Rogan.

Rogan is a billionaire Prime—the highest rank of magic user—and as unreadable as ever, despite Nevada’s “talent.” But there’s no hiding the sparks between them. Now that the stakes are even higher, both professionally and personally, and their foes are unimaginably powerful, Rogan and Nevada will find that nothing burns like ice …

Boy oh boy do the sparks fly between Nevada and Rogan in WHITE HOT. You can practically feel the heat between them as they dance around one another. He's determined to have her, and she's just as determined to keep him away despite wanting him just as much. They both are so incredibly strong willed, and yet Nevada's backbone is almost solid iron in comparison to his and she can out stubborn him all day. It was so enjoyable watching her bring MAD Rogan to his knees. But don't worry, he isn't neutered just gentled a bit, which made this romantic build up/progression in this series absolutely perfect in my book! I cannot wait to see how things continue with this pair in the next book.

Romance aside there was even so much more to love about this book. The political and magicial issues have hit the fan, so to speak, and wow was it all intense. The feeling of family is so strong in this book, and I loved every moment of it. Nevada and company have some pretty hard choices to make, and this book set things up perfectly for what I imagine will be one heck of an ending to the trilogy in the next book.

You know you've read a truly amazing book when upon finishing it, you immediately want to start over from the beginning and re-read it all over again. Everything about WHITE HOT was top knotch, from the intense fast paced action, to the character development, and oh the romance! There was never a single dull moment in this book and I simply couldn't put it down.

I simply cannot recommend this book and this series any higher! An absolute must read, run do not walk and grab this book immediately!

Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews
Kate Daniels #9

Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…

Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

MAGIC BINDS in a word was amazing. Just utterly fantastic. It was everything great about this series wrapped up into an amazing story and plotline and I absolutely loved every minute of this book. In fact I loved it so much, I wanted to start over and read it all again as soon as I finished. Considering I barely restrained from doing so, I definitely see a re-read of this fantastic book sometime in my near future.

Kate really shined in MAGIC BINDS. Previously she always was this perfect icon of virtue. Despite being seemingly bloodthirsty she never let a man behind and never chose the easy or beneficial path. However, this time around we saw a bit of the darker side potential in her, and while she never actually faltered, the struggle made her feel just a bit more real, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Moreso, the dynamic of all the other characters as they adjusted to this new, slightly darker Kate was more than entertaining as well. Curran's responses left me in hysterics at times, as well as the rest of the cast. I won't go further into detail to avoid spoiling things, but let me just say that all of the character dynamics in this one are completely spot on.

Simply put, if you're looking for one heck of a ride that not only keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire book, but will also leave you with a happy contented sigh at the end, MAGIC BINDS is the book for you. A fantastic book, series, characters, and plotline, I loved every minute of this book. Bravo!

Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews
Kate Daniels #8

In the latest Kate Daniels novel from #1 New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake…

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity—too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild’s unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don’t realize is that the odd jobs they’ve been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece…

The ending of the previous book was a serious game changer and I couldn't wait to get my hands MAGIC SHIFTS to see how everything panned out. So honestly I expected this book to be mostly about the repercussions of those game changing events, but it was that and oh so much more. Sometimes I'm in awe at how the stakes can continually be raised in a long running series. Every time I think "That's it, the author cannot possibly top this," and then the next book comes along and somehow they do. It truly is incredible.

I really love how these books make me both laugh and cry, and also keep me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. They definitely make for intense reads, almost to the point where I have to keep telling myself to slow down and savor the read, otherwise I'm so sucked in that I want to rush to the end. But I guess that's what they make "re-reads" for, and if there's ever been a series worthy of one, it's the Kate Daniels series. I've read all the books several times over, and MAGIC SHIFTS is sure to be the same. They simply are that incredible. Trust me, these are THE books to read for urban fantasy fans.

Release Day Review: Night Shift Anthology

Night Shift Anthology
Stories from Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews,
Lisa Shearin, & Milla Vane

Four masters of urban fantasy and paranormal romance plunge readers into the dangerous, captivating world unearthed beyond the dark...

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh delivers a smoldering story with Secrets at Midnight , as the scent of Bastien Smith’s elusive lover ignites a possessiveness in him that’s as feral as it is ecstatic. And now that he’s found his mate, he’ll do anything to keep her.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews’ novella,Magic Steals , when people start going missing, shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau and jaguar shifter Jim Shrapshire must uncover the truth about the mysterious creatures responsible.

From Milla Vane—a warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people. But she quickly discovers that the beast isn't a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself.

It’s seer Makenna Frazier's first day on the job at Supernatural Protection and Investigations, and her first assignment is more than she bargained for when bodyguard duty for a leprechaun prince’s bachelor party goes every which way but right in national bestselling author Lisa Shearin’s Lucky Charms .

I don't typically read anthologies unless they are set in worlds that I already read, but I decided to give this one a shot. I'm really glad I did as I have a new series to read, and two of my favorite series have been expanded upon. Definitely a great read for fans of these series, or anyone looking for something new to try out.

Onto the stories:

Secrets at Midnight by Nalini Singh - I'm a huge fan of Nalini's archangel series, but I haven't read anything from her psy series. If this novella is any comparison to the rest of the series, then it seems I have been missing out. Boy is it hot! That being said, I don't think this was really the best place for a new comer to start in the series, because I was more than a little lost as to the world and what was going on outside of the main couple. Even so, an enjoyable read that makes me want to check out the full books.

Magic Steals by Ilona Andrews - THIS novella is the entire reason I wanted to read this anthology. I've been dying to see Jim and Dali's story since their attraction had been first hinted about a couple of books ago in the series. I absolutely loved seeing them together, and Dali is a really interesting character to see inside her head. Now I wish there was going to be a full length from her perspective. Even so, I'm really happy I got to read this story, and see another side to the mysterious Jim.

The Beast of Blackmoor by Milla Vane - This one was a difficult read for me. I just don't think barbarian stories are my thing as I couldn't really get into it. Don't get me wrong, it was sexy, but it was a bit too out there for my tastes.

Lucky Charms by Lisa Shearin - I have to admit that I completely spaced on what this story was until I started it. I absolutely loved the first book in this series, so it was really great to see this prequel story. Now I just can't wait to get my hands on book two as this fun story reminded me just how fun the book was, and how much I loved it. If you're looking for a new urban fantasy read, these are the ones to check out, lots of fun!

Early Review: Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

, by Kt Clapsadl

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews
Hidden Legacy #1

#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

I absolutely love Ilona Andrew's books, so when I saw she was writing a new series, I have to admit there might have been a bit of fan girl excitement. Of course, a part of me was wondering if lightning would strike twice and this series could be as good as the Kate Daniels series. Well let me just say that BURN FOR ME was every bit as good as any Kate book, and dare I say... possibly even better. You can really tell that this author duo is only getting better at their craft, and it showed in BURN FOR ME.

It's a toss up at to whether the world, characters, or the romance enthralled me the most, so I'll briefly talk about each without spoiling. The world behind the story was fascinating, and unlike anything I've read before. It felt like a mix between a dystopian and a normal urban fantasy, which I loved as it was anything but predictable. Now onto the characters. I absolutely loved Nevada. She's so fierce and devoted, but don't worry, she's definitely not Kate 2.0. She generally tries to avoid danger, and thinks before she leaps, and I enjoyed seeing the sensible aspects about her. The rest of the characters are every bit as well fleshed out, making for a really interesting cast.  Lastly onto the romance. While things were more of a set up rather than an actual romance, lordy can I tell that things will explosive. Oh my goodness is the attraction between Mad Rogan and Nevada incredible. I can't wait to see how this plays out!

BURN FOR ME is an utter treat. From the amazing world, to the incredible cast of characters, and enthralling plot, this book should be at the very top of any urban fantasy fan's TBR pile. I simply cannot praise this new series enough and will be counting down the months impatiently until the next release.
