Sydney is full of native English speakers, but also people who are keen to learn Japanese. Despite the difficulty of the language, students persist and spend hours of their time in classes with dedicated tutors, as said tutors will no doubt tell you. Regardless of you level, there will be a course for you, but you will need to put the time in too.
Whether you need courses for education, business, or personal enjoyment, there is a teacher in Sydney that will suit you. The language community counts 130 million speakers worldwide too, so even if you can't visit Japan right now, classes are available online via zoom, so you can still chat with native speakers, and other students will be keen to share their love of Japan online too.
The Japanese language originated around 600AD when a small group of Chinese sailors settled on the archipelago. They brought with them many cultural and societal norms that are still in Japanese society now.
They also brought with them the core group of characters that form the writing system of the language. This number is not small for English speakers: 3! So no wonder you need a school and dedicated tutors and lessons to master the tongue.
Whatever the location of your first Japanese lessons, whether online or in person, they will no doubt focus on writing skills, as well as some daily greetings. The first writing skill gives you experience in the most fundamental elements of your learning, as this syllabary helps you phonetically understand the other characters you'll encounter in later learning. This can be confusing for beginners in Australia as it's not a real alphabet, rather a group of consonant-noun clusters that have a dedicated sound per character.
You will see this everywhere in Japan and online, and people will understand you most of the time if you write it. Your tutors will spend ample time getting your skills level up in this, as it is one of the most useful skills in years to come in your Japanese learning, though it may seem small now.
Like with Hiragana, this is a syllabary, but with pointy edges. You would see this in fewer events, as it is used for international words, and for onomatopoeia. Nonetheless, you will come across this every day of year in Japan. There's nothing new to master sound wise here, but there is a whole new set of characters! A university education will spend less time focussing on this in class, with home hours needing to be dedicated to Katakana's mastery.
This is the system schools will introduce last, as it comes from Chinese and has complex characters with varied pronunciations. Tutors will not zoom through them, and only expect students to learn a handful at a time, dedicating a few hours to each. These can even take years to master, not least for the different pronunciations that each can have!
Thankfully, you're likely to find an online location to practice these in private, no matter your level, but students will have to devote time outside of courses to learning themselves. On top of encountering and practicing the characters in class, students will also need to commit the group of strokes to memory, which is a learning experience in itself.
This might sound like a lot to learn, especially if you need Japanese to visit Japan, or for education at university level. But fear not, a Superprof tutor can help inform you about culture and language in Japan. Just book a private session with them online over zoom or in person today!
Now, we'll tell you a bit about how you can put your Japanese skills to use.
Because travel time to Japan from Australia takes relatively little time, and many group tours go there, flights from Sydney are very frequent and inexpensive, so English speaking Japanese students living in Australia who love the culture of Japan, and who want a firsthand cultural experience can try their luck on the ground. As Japanese is only spoken in its homeland as an official language, the average student will greatly benefit from taking their course here, especially as English is limited in Japan!
Japan has a great education industry, with a university for all skills, you may have, and for which your language skills and cultural understanding will come in very handy. Very few good courses are offered in English, so it's wise for you to really be up on the language and culture before undertaking a university course in country.
Japan is a surprisingly international location, where the student experience is ranked as one of the best in the world. Have a look at events at your own university or business about international exchange in country (whether you're in Sydney or Melbourne, there will be events to help you with this).
Obviously culture is a big draw for Australian fans of everything Japanese. As the Japanese culture, people, and even the education is unique, you'll be able to engage with this in greater depth with language skills that pertain to the country specifically. You have to get on their level to understand the idiosyncrasies of the Japanese, especially if you're a fan of big cultural exports like manga.
Though Japanese is only spoken in one location and they're a very private people, it's still an important international language. It is in fact an official language of the IMF and the G7, thus gets heard regularly at international events throughout the year. Therefore, if you're interested in international politics or business, you may stand out as a student of Japanese!
So get in touch with one of the experienced Superprof private tutors today and start your international Japanese language journey!
