One More Change for the Year....

Not long now and a new year will be upon us... my word for this year was "Change" and I've already chosen my word for next year.... - no it is NOT "Change" again... lol! I'll tell you next year what my new word is (hint: Alice is going to have the same word!)... (oh, that isn't much of a hint, is it...?! Sorry... you'll have to wait....!)..

Anyway, must use this year's word one more time... I have one more "Change" to share with you.... and it is this:

Days Filled with Joy

Yes, I am moving to my own domain :) I've explained why a bit on my new blog, so please head on over there and say hello... and please, please update your bookmarks/links! I am ready to jump back into blogging and would love to have you along for the ride!!!

Merry Christmas to all!!!

Christmas will always be for us a time
To reflect on Christ.
The gift God gave to all the world
Was the gift of His life.

We know Christmas is not about tinsel
Nor fancy Christmas wreaths.
Nor is it about all the decorations
That adorns our Christmas trees.

And it's not about Holly and Mistletoe
Hanging from our doors.
Nor is it about the gifts that are left
By the jolly Santa Claus.

Christmas is more than all of this
And the only reason why
We celebrate Christ's birth together
Is the wonder of His life.

So remember as you celebrate
Just what's it all about.
And invite the Lord to join with you
Instead of leaving Him behind.

For He will always be the reason
We celebrate this day.
No substitute the world may offer
Can take that meaning away.

Merry Christmas dear blogging friends! May you have a wonderful time with family and friends and may we all, like Scrooge, say :

I will honour Christmas in my heart,
and try to keep it all the year.

Bloggy Bye Bye...

Do you remember my word for the year? It was "change", and a lot of change I have had so far... I have moved countries (yet again), set up a quilt shop, started learning how to do long arm quilting... all this while still managing to teach my children at home and run a household.

In case you are wondering if I can really do all this... well, it is not easy and some things have to give. One of them has been my internet and blog time. I just don't seem to have the time to spend blogging, reading blogs and commenting. Over the past months I have been trying to decide if I should stop blogging, or take a break, and I am finally coming to the conclusion that I at least need to take a break. I am not ready to make the decision to stop completely, so I will put it off for a little longer :) I will drop in on your blogs when I can... and if I am able to come back to blogland I will... but for now, I am sending you all a bloggy farewell...... TTFN... :)

Nirvana is done!!!

Phew! It has taken a while, but Nine Patch Nirvana is done! Alice and I started this bom back in 2009. I finished the top last year sometime but wanted it quilted by Nora on the long arm... instead I got to practice on it myself :) You've heard of dog eared quilts? Well, this one was elephant eared... I really don't know how it happened, but lesson learned, need to be more careful with my borders..

Anyway, I was so keen to finish and use it that I was lazy and did the binding completely by machine:

Tiana supervised... or was she watching the birds?

Called Matt to hold the quilt up for the final photo:

It's a big quilt... come on Matt, hold it up...

Up Matt, Up!!

Hmmmm..... better call in big brother to help....

That's better... :) I'll have to crop it...

Yay! All done and I put it into use right away. Cameron was very pleased because now I don't need to pinch his all the time :)

Quilts and Brunch

A friend of ours had a quilt that had some holes and he asked if I could have a go at repairing it. I couldn't say no, so I brought it home and had a bit of a look... I found out that it was quite easy to fix and had been made in an interesting way.

If you have a look here:

you can kind of see that the red velvet has come out from under the other bit of fabric, which is almost like a wide ribbon. That "ribbon" has been folded over into a hem, and then with the velvet tucket under, has been topstitched... which has also been the way they have quilted the entire quilt, if that makes any sense at all...!! So they haven't actually sewn the two fabrics together and then quilted it... which is why it is literally coming apart at the seams.

It was a big quilt, and I found four rips/holes in it. One good thing about the method in which it was made, it was easy to fix. But I imagine it is going to end up with more holes... Here is a photo of the whole quilt:

It is just a simple design but effective with the fabrics used. I'd like to use those kind of fabrics one day, it gives a kind of Middle Eastern/Persian feel.

After I finished fixing the quilt yesterday, we decided to head over to one of the compounds where we used to live. Every Friday morning they have a very nice brunch, and we'd been meaning to go ever since we got back here.

The restuarant is currently in the gym, because in December the old one burnt down... so that is why there is a basketball hoop in behind the buffet tables :)

We have known some of the guys who work there for years. It's not an easy life for them - they only get to go "home" every two years and see their family. But it is the way they support their families and educate their children, so they do it. And they have it much better than some of their other countrymates who have to work outside in construction... or other such jobs.

Brecky was yummy...

The boys made the most of the "all you can eat" bit, of course :)

And the cost for this feast? $10.... not bad for an all you can eat buffet... you wouldn't find that anywhere in Australia anymore!!

Oh, and for dessert... I played with Emmie G:

It was a good day :)

When Night turns to Day....

It's a very special month here at the moment - the holy month of Ramadan. This is the month where Muslims across the world fast during the day for 30 days. Usually we are quite unaffected by this in Australia... life goes on as usual for us non-Muslims, but here... well, it is a different story :)

As soon as Ramadan starts here, life turns topsy-turvy... For starters, no one is allowed to eat or drink in public during the day. This isn't hard for the kids and I because we are mostly home all day, although I nearly messed up coming back from our sewing day... taking a bite out of a candy bar on the way home! Cameron is like - hey, you're not allowed to eat that out here!! And I'm like, OOPS! Quick, swallow and put it away!!

For the men it is harder because they still have to go to work. Work hours are a bit different for most though. Cameron gets to work from 8 till 3 instead of his usual hours, so that helps a lot. We have been getting up in the morning and giving him a decent breakfast before he leaves, and then have a meal ready when he gets home. He is not allowed to eat or drink anything at work either. It took a few days to get adjusted, but he is fine now. The main thing he missed was his morning coffee on the way to work from his favorite coffee shop!

For those who fast, they cannot have anything to eat or drink from sunrise to sunset! So they have their "breakfast", where they literally break their fast, at sunset... this is when all the restaurants (which have been closed all day of course) open and things get really busy :) Most shops open at around 9.30pm and stay open till early hours of the morning. The roads... well, they are bad enough in Riyadh during the rest of the year, but during Ramadan it can take you hours to get somewhere that normally takes you half an hour. Needless to say, we avoid going out at night :)

The big supermarkets are open during the day and if you go in the morning during this month, they are nice and quiet because most people are still sleeping. Yes, day turns to night as well, with a new routine emerging... a lot of people don't go to sleep until anywhere between 2 and 4 am, so of course they sleep in. Which makes the roads nice and quiet until about mid afternoon.

I have to say this month has been nice and relaxing for us. We have slowed right down, don't go out a lot, and are enjoying spending time together at home. We've been catching up on some school projects and gotten into a nice routine really. In another week it will be school holidays for us (yay!) and I don't know who is looking forward to that more, me or the kids, lol! I haven't been able to spend much time with Emmie G at all... but come holidays, look out!!
